Wow, do you realize how old this story is?

Yeah, but evidently, I've led a sheltered life,
and I hadn't heard of him.

Oh, no biggie. He left a long long time ago. And if you like him a lot I'd suggest reading up on his mentor, the late Dr. Bruce M. Metzger. A much more respected textual critic.

I grew up in a wonderful church. All my life I wanted to be a missionary.

Went to college, studied theology. Won a scholarship to study at Oxford university. After getting my degree, I realized I no longer believed in the Bible. Too many inconsistencies and more.

I do think there's.....something.....out there. But I don't believe the Bible has the answers.

Naaa, I wager you attended an institution that venerated the Alexandrian MSS. That was all the rage the last century.

Last century? Seems they still are. Just not so in your face these days.

Nit as much. About a decade ago scholarship has been abandoning the Alexandrian MSS which had enjoyed great veneration in the 20th century. Lots of scholars have begun to go back to favoring the Antiochian MSS. The shift began about 10 years ago.

I have the sneaking suspicion that if such messages agreed with your way of thinking, you'd agree even if they were proven to be wrong. In other words, you disapprove because they contradict your spoon-fed philosophies. I could be wrong though.

This happened a while ago.

His seminal work "Misquoting Jesus" came out years and years ago ... 2005 I believe.

He has scores of books at this point all attempting to debunk the biblical Christ in favor of a more naturalist view.

There is a brilliant, insightful book written in response to "Misquoting Jesus", btw.

Cheers.

what is the name of that book? thanks

I sincerely hope you plan on reading both sides of the research, instead of the one that suits your views more. Gotta be willing to push those boundaries if you want a more well-rounded perspective on things. Otherwise, it just looks like you're avoiding conflict in case nonbelievers happen to make some good points.

The person in the op reminds me of Dr. Gene Scott who at one time was head of Christ for the nations who in my opinion became puffed up with knowldge and preached that God will forgive you of all your sins so sin it up and evident in his life.

I am not one who is afraid to look at the folly of man compared to the wisdom of God. After first coming to the Lord in 86 I read all the other supposed rejected books of the bible and all they did was enforce my faith. Listened to the JW and the Mormons and their conception of the God and keep coming back to the bible.

Oh, I have no idea what that is.

And how dare you besmirch the memory of Dr. Gene Scott?

"Git on the phones!"

People who havent figured out that Jesus is the OT God have no clue at all. That's where i am going to end this. Blind people everywhere.

So, how about sharing your knowledge instead of making pithy remarks?

LW, I think you need a little extra prayer time. You've been a little grumpy lately. Maybe get the elders of the church to lay hands on you.
