Do you live in NH? Most sensible post I have read on ATS all day.

No, Midwest. The Bible Belt.
The Midwest Bible Belt is not made up completely of right-winged tea party members. There is a strong group of Democrats who know that protection is necessary, that tradition is important, that respect is earned and that extremes on both ends are harmful to everyone.
People attack the "middle of the road", but the middle part of the road is what defines the road itself. It isn't defined by the fringes or extremes, it's defined by the main part, the middle part, the strongest part, the part where most people are located. The fringes can crumble away, they can be covered up, they can break, they can crack, they are only needed when you meet someone coming from the other direction and you need to pass by one another, otherwise, you are right there in the middle of the road where you have the most control, the best conditions and the driving gets you where you're going.
Think of your body, your heart is right smack dab in the middle, and a little to the left. God was no fool.

See? See why guns in the hands of the citizenry doesn't work?

That's the reason for the psychiatric exam. You wouldn't pass, you wouldn't be carrying one. (given your own description here).

Right Ninja Kitten - that is going to go over well here on the NRA websight...I mean ATS but not the rest of the world that don't feel comfortable either being armed or with everyone being armed around us. I am a Democrat and I have a gun, so I do agree people who want them should not lose their right to own them but lets stop short of advocating a gun in every pot. It is subsidizing insanity.

There was an incident recently where trained officers were responding to a shooter and they ended up killing more innocent people than the shooter did. These guys practice shooting on a daily basis and they ended up killing more innocent people than the shooter they were trying to apprehend.

If what you advocate comes to pass what we would be reading about primarily is number of innocent deaths caught in the crossfire. COLLATERAL DAMAGE and CROSSFIRE DEATHS would be new and rising numbers we all watch increase from day to day, month to month, year to year before we finally decide this was a very bad idea or ...knowing us.... decide everyone needs something nuclear.

Too violent. Everyone thinks they need a gun.

Instead of learning conflict resolution - we are taught warfare.

That is about it in a nutshell.

The whole gun issue is a distraction to what the real problem is:
Why are psychos coming out the woodwork in the US and some other countries?

But getting back to the gun issue.
The police are not our body guards.
And many times it has been said that its up to the individual to protect themselves.
Well, I want to be as well armed as the next person.
Its my right, my prerogative as an organism on this beautiful but deadly planet.

Those that want to walk this Earth defenseless, well, thats on you.
Dont take away the food from my table, the roof of my house, or the means to defend myself.

Since America is a super power and all, it's kind of hard not to meddle in American topics, since things that occur in the US could easily affect other parts of the world.

We have public land and wild animals in the U.S. and Alaska. This man wrote that he`d just been attacked by a 400 lb bear wlile taking a walk in Alaska. He was able to kill it but was alive because of the ability to shoot it. How many lives have been saved because of our right to bear arms is the way we should be looking at it! Not the other way around. I, myself want the right to think for myself and the education to be able to do so

LOL that lines up with my theory. See, where I come from, gun control means aiming before you shoot. Seems to suit us just fine, as there hasn't even been one gun-related murder in my neck of the woods in well over 3 years.

That's a good one too!

When people use things responsibly and sensibly, they aren't a problem. It's all the crazy people who treat them like toys or tools to get revenge that makes them bad. I'm tired of suffering and having things taken from me because there are other people who don't have enough sense to treat things as they should be treated

Definition of Gun Control- Use both hands and hit what you are aiming for....

Dammit, some people make me sick, I do not carry guns, but I am pro gun. Maybe because I was educated on them at a young age. If you don't want to carry a gun, you don't have to, but you have ABSOLUTLY NO RIGHT to tell me I can't. period. the end.

Exactly. Why should those of us who are responsible with them have to suffer because of the idiots who don't know how to treat them?

In my area, we hunt and we use guns to do that. We don't go around shooting people or using them to assert dominance. We know what guns are for and we treat them with respect and responsibility. Why should our guns be taken because some moron somewhere doesn't know how to use them properly?

I hear ya, I know alot of hunters, law enforcement, All it takes is one idiot to screw everything up. I don't think the govt can take all guns away, Last year I think they did over 300,000 background checks on Black Friday last year. And over a million over the holiday season, So, thats ALOT of guns..I wonder what the numbers are this year. Probably not as many, but alot i'm sure.

I'm in a tiny little area where people trade and sell guns a lot. There are a LOT of unregistered guns around here without background checks, but they're mostly hunting rifles. We've never had a shooting in this area (thank God) because people are responsible with their guns.

Of course...there are places in Norway where if you go out without your gun you are taking a chance due to the frequency of polar bear attack - it is a looming threat. Guns definitely have their place. Hunters, naturally. Homeowner should probably have one but it becomes a mistake to push guns on people who don't a) respect them b) know how to use them c) know how to keep them from falling into the wrong hands. And who needs assault weapons and automatic rifles? You hear of people hunting with those? I need a gun to protect my home and family from looters when in frequent power outages or storms, the security alarm doesn't work.

Nothing wrong with a little gun control. Control is the key word. Trust me, no one will use the word "ban" unless it is in conjunction with "assault rifle" or "automatic weapons."

And yet America is allowed to intervene in the goings on of pretty much every other country in the world...

Hear, hear. Great point.

Everything the US does has an affect globally, even if those effects are not immediately obvious. Because the US has interfered with the rest of the world, we have every right to criticise their actions and discuss the best way forward for the "world police".

If lack of guns was the cause of gun tragedies, we should expect to see a major problem in countries with strict gun control, but we don't generally see that, do we. The same goes for "God".

Gun crime soars by 35%

Created: 9 January 2003 | Updated: 10 January 2003

The Government's latest crime figures were condemned as "truly terrible" by the Tories today as it emerged that gun crime in England and Wales soared by 35% last year.

Criminals used handguns in 46% more offences, Home Office statistics revealed.

Firearms were used in 9,974 recorded crimes in the 12 months to last April, up from 7,362.

It was the fourth consecutive year to see a rise and there were more than 2,200 more gun crimes last year than the previous peak in 1993.

Figures showed the number of crimes involving handguns had more than doubled since the post-Dunblane massacre ban on the weapons, from 2,636 in 1997-1998 to 5,871.

Unadjusted figures showed overall recorded crime in the 12 months to last September rose 9.3%, but the Home Office stressed that new procedures had skewed the figures.

With new recording procedures taken into account the actual overall rise was just 2%, the Home Office said.

Culture of violence: Gun crime goes up by 89% in a decade

By James Slack
UPDATED:03:42 EST, 27 October 2009

Gun crime has almost doubled since Labour came to power as a culture of extreme gang violence has taken hold.

The latest Government figures show that the total number of firearm offences in England and Wales has increased from 5,209 in 1998/99 to 9,865 last year - a rise of 89 per cent.

In some parts of the country, the number of offences has increased more than five-fold.

In eighteen police areas, gun crime at least doubled.

The statistic will fuel fears that the police are struggling to contain gang-related violence, in which the carrying of a firearm has become increasingly common place.

Last week, police in London revealed they had begun carrying out armed patrols on some streets.

Ridiculous indeed... I mean, what sane person would even think that CRIMINALS and CRAZIES will ever get their guns from the BLACK MARKET WHICH IS NOT SUBJECT TO ANY LAW... Pfffft...

I mean, it seems clear that the mayority of leftwingers think that CRIMINALS and CRAZIES will obey a ban law right?... Am I right leftwingers?... CRIMINALS and CRAZIES will OBEY the LAW... Riiiight?...

And how do the numbers of deaths due to shootings compare between the US and the UK?

It's a hell of a lot lower in the UK, isn't it...

Gang members and life criminals will always manage access to guns if they are desperate enough, and know where to go and what to pay, but these school shootings and other mass incidents are rarely done by life time criminals and members of the underworld, are they. They are done by lone nutters, usually with mental problems, who if they lived in the UK, would rarely manage to get a gun. That's why these kind of incidents are far less common here and elsewhere.
