FLASH: Syrian information minister says "terrorists," not state, cut the Internet - pro-government Ikhbariya TV
Battles between Syrian rebels and government troops have reportedly forced the closure of the main road leading to Damascus International Airport.
The news came as the Dubai-based Emirates airline suspended flights to the Syrian capital on Thursday.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said there was heavy fighting "along all the areas along the road" to the airport, southeast of the city.
The activist group said clashes were particularly intense in Babbila, a suburb bordering the rebel stronghold of Tadamoun.

The Obama administration is preparing to recognize Syria's new opposition council as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people in the coming weeks, paving the way for greater U.S. support for groups seeking to oust President Bashar Assad's regime, officials said Thursday.
Announcement of the move — which has already been taken by several U.S. allies — is planned on or around a conference of more than 70 nations in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Dec. 12. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is planning to attend the latest so-called Friends of Syria gathering.

A key member of the unrecognized Syrian opposition accused Turkey on Wednesday of allowing Saudi mercenaries to enter through its border with Syria.
“These people are destroying Syria,” Haytham Manna, spokesman for the National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change, told the Voice of Russia. “Unfortunately, there are political players such as Turkey who allow them to invade Syria.”

"Terrorists" cut Syria's Internet - minister of information
Syria's minister of information said that "terrorists", not the state, were responsible for a countrywide Internet outage on Thursday, a pro-government TV station said.
"It is not true that the state cut the Internet. The terrorists targeted the Internet lines, resulting in some regions being cut off," he was quoted by al-Ikhbariya as saying.
State TV quoted the telecommunications minister as saying that engineers were working to repair what he said was a fault in the main communications and Internet cable.
