If we look at this topic...it all breaks down to DRUGS! It is Drug Money that is purchasing AK-47's, Chinese Made and then having these changed to Full Auto. Law Enforcement is getting it's ass kicked by these weapons that can penetrate Vests even without Armor Piercing Rounds.

The People who Buy these weapons are Drug Cartels, their Dealers and Distribution People. They have the Money to purchase them and modify.

The War on Drugs is a DISASTER! It has NEVER WORKED and it never will work. Drugs are the DRIVING MECHANISM that is bringing this topics issue to the point of changing Laws.

Thus if a comprehensive Plan was made that allowed people to purchase drugs cheaply only if they adhere to a program that VERY SLOWLY as past programs have tried to get people off Drugs too quickly and they tend to revert back to using them...thus a program that takes a YEAR as each dose get's progressively less...should work.

This availability of Cheap Safe Narcotics as well as the eventual end of Drug Dependency would DESTROY the Cartels and thus stop Gang Warfare as well as much of the Violent Crime that happens in the U.S. as well as the WORLD!

Hard to fault the logic so I agree with you at this point. But I will add I think TPTB want guns in the hands of the bad guys. Why? I am not really sure maybe so they can point the finger at legal gun owners as the problem.

We need to start making Hard Choices. Choices that will WORK! Not choices that are good for Public Relations or choices that pander to the Majorities Ideals or Beliefs.

What is needed is LEADERSHIP! Just ONCE I would LOVE to see a President make such a choice which may not be the Popular thing to do...but it would be the RIGHT thing to do.

There is no requirement for me to explain to the gov't why I might desire a certain assessory, I only am required to purchase it legitimately, and carry the proper permit.

It is the only way, any other solution will force a black market, kinda like the drug prohibition., which is an utter failure, IMO.

I personally don't want to live in a country where the only people that can have guns, are the criminals. That would not make much sense to me. Guess I'm 100% American in that regard. If, the numbers of guns were very small, like in some european countries, then it would be a simple measure to control what guns were there, but here, in America??, not gonna happen without a big ol' fashioned gun fight.

When and where is this actually happening? IMO, these are rare occurrances, but if you can show me some differing information that shows that Cops are dying while being shot through their body armor I would be very interested in that information. Thanks

This has been occurring for DECADES. Although the number of Shooting Deaths is much higher for Gang on Gang violence especially in the Large Boarder Cities near Mexico in the U.S...shootings of FBI, ATF and State and Local Law Enforcement is prevalent not only in those Cities but in Large Cities all across the U.S.

Drug Distributing Gangs simply no longer fear Law Enforcement when so heavily armed.

They aren't converting cheap SKS knockoffs, they're buying fully functional AK's.

For the last 5-10 years the international arms trade has been selling to the cartels. That's also where they are getting the grenades, none of those in U.S. gun stores.

Of course the Mexican police are another source, since most are working for the cartels.

Look...I am conflicted by my own post. Still...the fact remains that people are converting and using these weapons for various criminal activities and I would not support such a BAN if Gun Manufacturers simply made it impossible to modify Assault Weapons that are Semi-Auto to Full Auto.

I said it before and I will say it again. In order to convert any gun from semi-auto to full-auto you need to change the gun sear. The two sears are not compatible with each other. The full-auto sear can only be attained legally by filling federal forms first and IF approved you will get it. Problem is the government provides this sear to gunsmiths that work closely with government agencies(local, state, federal) only inorder to develop new weapons for these agencies. The gunsmith cannot legally alter rifles from semi-auto to full-auto for civilians under any circumstances.

With a 200 dollar tax stamp you can legally own a fully automatic weapon in most places in the united states.

So in reality you are for even more taking away of freedom. Way to fight the good fight buddy.

And this law has been on the books for a long time and guess how many crimes you see with fully automatic weapons being committed by lawful gun owners. Think about it.

As a civilian you can legally buy a machine gun made prior to the ban of 1984, which means they are all used up and expensive as hell. Only a hardcore gun owner who is a bit dense in the head would spend $5,000 and up to buy someone else's piece of #; the barrels are probably all worn out, etc.

The prices are extremely expensive(5-10 times overpriced in relation to original value) because the supply for them is very limited and the demand is rather high. I personally would NEVER buy someone elses pos weapon even if the price was reasonable. It would have to be at least 40% under original value. Buying used guns is no different than buying used cars or used appliances.

If I were a totalitarian leader in the US I would:

1. Do what Split said in relation to drugs. great stuff!
2. Sink a whole lot of money into creating opportunity (education, retraining etc). The bad guys (some at least), given the right conditions, wouldn't need to carry on like they are now. But some people will always remain iffy, so we can't help them really.
3. Free basic level of health, across the board. That isn't socialism, that's just caring!
4. Sink a LOT of money into decent public housing. Get these guys (and girls) off the street. When people have more to protect, they will (or should) be inclined to protect it, which means making life choices that doesn't put what they have at risk...Choices like not running around with guns shooting people for stupid reasons.
oh and 5. Increase the Min. wage... very important!
All sounds rather fanciful doesn't it? Socialist? Well I don't care what you call it.

It is my opinion that those would put a much bigger dent into gun related crime than any restrictions. And your country is probably only one of the few that could afford it (well, maybe not now, but the bad times will pass).

Bandaids (restrictions) always come off in the shower, but I wonder, if those fantastic ideas were implemented and had positive results, would you guys feel less inclined to worry about your safety? I would imagine there would be a real possibility of that.

You'd also have a nation of smart healthy people with nice places to live. Sounds good no?

It won't stop every gun crime, but the people who resort to crime for reasons of subsistence would have a different focus, and some hope.

And don't get me wrong.. there's a LOT! to be done in my own country too.
So thats my attempt at compromise. You guys can keep your guns, at the range, in the wild, and ideally, not feel the need (as much) to take one with you everywhere you go. But you'll have to pay for it, pay a lot for it.

if i were a leader i would

1. make marijuana, Psilocybin, peyote, legal. grow/ obtain your own, nobody cares, it has helped human evolution

2. use the money from drug decriminalization to manufacture guns, print gun blueprints to give with any gun purchase so you can repair any part

3. difficult trivia questions must be answered before buying fully automatic weapons.

4. schools shall have extensive self sustaining gardening, farming programs and corporal punishment will be dealt by parents.

5. presidents in the first 12 16 years of the 21st century will be referred in history books as the "don't let this happen to your country" crowd of presidents

6. at all costs we must uphold the magna carta and the u.s. constitution.

but if you shoot someone who is trying to kill you, rob you, or steal your property, or if you can prove you are being "conned" you get more guns, and your picture in the paper with headline "local hero kills mugger, gets property, new truck and guns."

The LRAD that the US sold to China is used for crowd control and is non-lethal, at WORST.

It was used at the 2011 Superbowl, for example... for crowd control... Oh noes - we're selling China our football crowd control "weapons"...
