Ahhh - the ability to blend I call that. I know exactly what you are talking about. That "being one with..." I've been able to do it a few times myself. It can come in amazingly handy on occasion.
Anyway, here is mine.
A few years back I hunted in a swampy area in GA. Not too far from the Okefenokee. If I stayed until last shooting light it meant the hike back to my truck was always in total darkness.
There was this one section of woods with towering pines and thick undergrowth. Even on a full moon the trail just looked like a little ribbon of "less black" against "total black" if you did not remember to bring your flashlight. I admit to often forgetting mine.
My first night going back I entered that stretch of woods and just off the trail to my left something started following me. I would step. It would step. I would stop. It would stop. I would speed up. It would speed up.
It scared the heebie-geebies out of me the first night it happened. I took the safety off my 30/06 and held the flashlight in my hand along with the forestock of the rifle. That way where ever the light shined my rifle was also pointed.
But I looked high and low, I never saw it or any eye-shine. I yelled and go no response. From the footsteps it sounded large and bipedal.
I never ran from it. I spend a decent bit of time in the woods and something told me that would be the worst thing I could do. When I got up far enough to see the moonlight reflecting on my truck it stopped following me.
This happened every evening I hunted that area. For almost a month. Eventually I talked to it, but it never answered. It never came out of the woods. It never did anything but trail me.
It wasn't another hunter. This was a 2000 acre lease and I was the only one on it. It wasn't a deer, hog, bear, bobcat, dog, or panther. I'm familiar with those and know their sounds.

Ok, I lied, I promise this is the last one.. this happened about 2 years ago while I was in the military.. no woods this time, just in my barracks room... it was late night.. about 11:30, and I woke up, but I couldn't move besides my eyes.. I was pinned down by something on my chest, and it had my head pinned to its side.. and I could see something out of the corner of my eye.. but I couldnt make out what it was.. all I know is I was scared out of my wits, and tried to move with all my might and couldn't.. not one bit. When I was finally able to move, I jumped up and turned on the lights.. nothing. absolutely nothing. I couldnt go back to sleep for at least an hour or so... and when I finally could, it happened again, at about 3-4 am... I only remember the approximate times because I could see my clock beside me both times.. its happened alot throughout my lifetime... and I've even written college papers and a post here on ATS... still scares the crap out of me every time I think about it.. I still dont know what it is.. aliens, demons, ect.. I have no clue..

In the mirror he noticed what he thought was a cinnamon bear on the pile of stones. The witness was puzzled that the bear would not move or even look at him as he backed up because the back up alarm was blaring. About five or six feet from the pile he hit the breaks on the truck and the animal stood up on two legs. He could only see the belly of the creature and still not clearly from the effects the vibration of the truck had on the mirror. At this point the witness saw something in the mirror run across the road. He checked the passenger side mirror and saw nothing. When looking back to the driver’s mirror the other creature was gone as well.
The men went to the site and measured the footprints with a tape measure. There were many prints, although many weren’t clear a couple were distinct enough for a measurement. The larger set was about seventeen inches long and deeply embedded in the loose stone. The smaller were about ten inches. The witness said his boss was not having much of an impact trying to make footprints, he estimated the boss’ weight at about 450 to 500 lbs, so they said the creature must weigh much more than him. He also said the stride between the footprints was large enough he had to leap to cover the same distance.
