Lots of strange woods in Maine. My maternal grandfather was born and raised in Maine and when I was a little girl he used to tell me the "ghost stories" of his growing up there. I've always loved hearing spooky stories!!

Anyway, one of his experiences goes like this: he was a teenager and one of his buddies had recently gotten a new car (maybe this was the 30's or 40's, can't exactly remember when my grandpa was born and he's now deceased) and him and his friends wanted to go out for a joy ride of sorts. They ended up driving through wooded areas and he made it a point to tell me that roads back then were not like they are today - they weren't paved and they were very bumpy and rocky. Therefore, very loud.

It was night time and they were basically out in the middle of nowhere and had passed a farmhouse a few miles back when the car ran out of gas. They decided someone should stay with the car and my grandpa was chosen.... the rest of the boys hoofed it back to the farmhouse to get some gas.

They were gone for awhile when my grandpa got the sensation of being watched.... can you imagine, sitting alone in a car on the road back then? In the middle of nowhere.... anyway, he looked BACK behind him and where he was sitting and saw a face peering at him through the back window. Now, this was odd for a few reasons, one being that he could have (should have!) heard anyone approaching the car because of how the roads were back then.... footsteps would have been very audible. He heard nothing. Second..... it was just a face.

I asked him over and over, trying to get further details when he would tell me this story but he was very clear - it was JUST a face. No body, no shoulders, nothing... and when I asked for detail on the face he said he couldn't tell the gender or any identifying features at all. So, it's not my story, but one from spooky, lovely, wooded Maine
He had a few other stories too.

Ahhh - the ability to blend I call that. I know exactly what you are talking about. That "being one with..." I've been able to do it a few times myself. It can come in amazingly handy on occasion.

Anyway, here is mine.

A few years back I hunted in a swampy area in GA. Not too far from the Okefenokee. If I stayed until last shooting light it meant the hike back to my truck was always in total darkness.

There was this one section of woods with towering pines and thick undergrowth. Even on a full moon the trail just looked like a little ribbon of "less black" against "total black" if you did not remember to bring your flashlight. I admit to often forgetting mine.

My first night going back I entered that stretch of woods and just off the trail to my left something started following me. I would step. It would step. I would stop. It would stop. I would speed up. It would speed up.

It scared the heebie-geebies out of me the first night it happened. I took the safety off my 30/06 and held the flashlight in my hand along with the forestock of the rifle. That way where ever the light shined my rifle was also pointed.

But I looked high and low, I never saw it or any eye-shine. I yelled and go no response. From the footsteps it sounded large and bipedal.

I never ran from it. I spend a decent bit of time in the woods and something told me that would be the worst thing I could do. When I got up far enough to see the moonlight reflecting on my truck it stopped following me.

This happened every evening I hunted that area. For almost a month. Eventually I talked to it, but it never answered. It never came out of the woods. It never did anything but trail me.

It wasn't another hunter. This was a 2000 acre lease and I was the only one on it. It wasn't a deer, hog, bear, bobcat, dog, or panther. I'm familiar with those and know their sounds.

Now I'm really dying to hear how you and Frogs "blend with a tree." I've seemed to have managed to make myself invisible a few times before, but it wasn't a conscious process, more like focusing on not standing out. So how do you do it?

I've never been to that bridge, but I grew up not too far away from Windham, in Bath.

This is just a theory...but I think a lot of energy is stored in the Quartz and Granite that is very close to the surface in Maine and this results in a lot of the weirdness in the state, and in New England in general.

My Mother had once claimed to had seen a grey in a car in East Texas where I grew up in the younger years in a suburb north of Houston. I wasn't with her at the time and was just tot when she had the experience so I was unaware of this experience till much later in life. I suppose she didn't want to scare me, give me nightmares. Understood!

.
So I'm currently visiting with her for the holidays and she is sitting in the chair in front of me 'at this time' giving me the details. So here are words verbatim:

" It was daylight. 4 people/beings in the car. One looked exactly like the ET in the movie ET with a big head and skinny neck. The car was passing her though was moving fast. Could have been an actor in a movie though looked very real/lifelike by the way it moved it's head on it's skinny neck." Sounds 'real' to me; no? Can't fake skinny neck, big head, moving around. She was shook up at the time though was not in fear.

That was the only time she claimed to have seen an ET though in the past few years she has seen a few folks here in Florida time to time that just don't seem human by their actions which gives her a eary feeling though not threatening. I wouldn't doubt it as they 'are here' and there^.

Yup, think you're onto something there just as the magnetic energy found in Sedona, Arizona that has much iron in the rocks. Geomagnetic energy could feed a plasmic being, naturally, just as a caloric unit of heat from food to a human. Many TS underground bases are in these regions for the harvesting of the natural geomagnetic energy and it's affects. The technology down there is far more advanced than above ground as many here understand by now.

Went hiking with a friend in a remote region in Sedona, Arizona. He and his ladyfriend, (blush.....attractive, great masseuse and spiritual woman with pOsitive energy), invited me to stay in the house they were renting for the month while they/we explored the area. I could only stay a week. We had an interesting shamanic sweat-lodge experience there with hot stones, almost passed out from the heat. The Shaman said I had a unusual field around me.

Off topic, anyway, I went hiking with my friend in a remote region and I noticed a pile of rocks in the form of a pYramid about 20 feet tall. I could tell it was ancient and man made and was of a dark colored rock, different from the red rocks of the mountain. It was unmarked; unknown to most I would imagine? After surveying the area, I noticed there was a slim 2 foot wide layer of rock, as a strata that was facing upward, as it had obviously been shifted in the ancient past due to some tectonic activity in the region.

Some ancients apparently had mined this rock from this narrow strip of ore and made this pyramid. I convinced my friend to climb to the top. It took some convincing though after I had reached the pinnacle, he joined me. It was a dangerous climb though worth it. When we got to the top I could feel a powerful magnetic energy flowing though me. I liked it; it felt good though my friend started to get dizzy and had to slowly make is way back down. I had to help him to ensure he didn't fall. On the way back down the mountain, we hiked along this dark stratum to find where it had ended. It continued underground, unseen with naked eye at the base of the mountain as was expected.

What I'd like to do in the near future is find some like minded folks to join me on a trip with a rented RV with a mobile solar powered generator for power.....and explore northwestern Cananda and Alaska in the summertime. I was thinking of going to the next 'Running Man' event in the western US and starting from there to Canada/Alaska. I'm sure I could find some interesting folk to join me from there. haha. There are some fascinating sites I'm aware of I'd really like to see in that region heading north north/east. Ladies welcome.

Oh, just had a flashback of an experience on a hilltop in the northeastern Saudi Arabian desert. I was on 'rest and relaxation' or R&R in a remote desert residing in a large tarp tent structure with other soldiers at the time. At night, I had an odd feeling, as a magnetic pulling sensation to go for a walk to this hill that was nearby. I went alone and climbed atop it's gentle slope to the top of the hill. Awesome view of the desert and rolling hills. It was twilight, my favorite time of day, and I began to feel a powerful energy around me. I began to sing in some foreign tongue an Arabic tune. It was a powerful feeling and healing experience. I felt like I was 'born again' in a sense as if all my cells/dna had been (((Activated))), No drugs or alcohol either, just as in these other experiences though I did have a brief 'all naturale' smoke just before the Babbs bridge episode. Jssst being honest.

Visited an ancient stone castle in Petra, Jordan that was strategically situated at the confluence of two valleys which all trade had to pass and pay a tax/toll (ancient past) to the tower that be figure (insert label). It had an ancient spiralling stair case that went far underground to an underground water well source that is still 'wet' today though is no longer in use. There were many hieroglyphs on the walls. This place is very remote and about a two hours drive east from the capital of Amman, Jordan which was fascinating to see along with it's ancient colliseum we got to tour. I bought an interesting engraved/ornamented knife with a curved, snake like blade as a souvenier that was used in the past to sacrifice animals. fyi: No, I don't and have never sacrificed a being. Always like to collect a unique souvenier of each place I travel and keep them in a display unit for future reference/memOries. I could sense the very nervous vibes from the people as we were in uniform sporting our berets. Probably would have been wiser to go in civilian attire. I/we were brought there by invitation from some Jordanian special forces troops. Very interesting trip.

Thanks for the link to a very entertaining Coast to Coast show. For anyone interested, this was a second show with the same host and guest on this subject. Here is a link to the prior one:

As to the veracity of these stories, I strongly suggest you check out a particular Amazon review to David Paulides' book on the subject, "Missing 411":

Epic Amazon rant-review of "Missing 411"

I've never read such a long and detailed negative review before or an ongoing back-and-forth character assassination by an author and a reviewer. The bottom line for me is that the reviewer makes some good points, but also seems to have an ax to grind; however, the author also doesn't do a very compelling job countering some of the reviewer's primary arguments. In any case, it makes for entertaining on-line flame-war reading, the likes of which I've never seen.

The two C2C shows do make for good creepy wilderness stories, to be sure.

Alas, I have no creepy wilderness stories, although I have been in the wilderness a fair amount, not in frequently alone and in the dead of night; the worst of I have ever experienced was some loud rustling/movement in the bush, which was either a bear or a skunk. As it turns out, skunks can be very noise and when moving through underbrush they can sound like a human moving around. I know this because I used to live in a neighborhood with a lot of skunks, and they would traipse outside my open bedroom windows at night, and it sounded just like a prowler moving around.

My closest anecdote to a creepy forest story is that once, in high school, I and my GF and another couple drove up to Mt. Hood (in Oregon) to camp for the weekend. We didn't bring any maps, and relied on my knowledge of campgrounds from Boy Scout trips. The first one we came to was empty EXCEPT for a large motor cycle gang that had pulled in just before us. Suffice it to say, we moved on. The next place we went was Timothy Lake, where there are a number of campgrounds, we noticed paper plate signs on the entrance to each one, with swastikas on them as well as other writing. We drove through one and the campground was filled up with families all wearing military fatigues/cammies. A number of odd flags were flying about too (don't remember if Old Glory was also flying). It looked a whole lot like some kind of white supremacist militia weekend family retreat. We moved on again -- go figyure. Ended up camping after dark in some place by the side of the road with a bunch of other campers -- guess they all had the same experiences as us -- and then the next day sought out another known campground, but which wasn't all that bucolic, being that it was beside a dried-up lake. I'd call this a freaky camping story, rather than a creepy one, but it's the best I got.

Ok .. with everyone posting their creepy stories.. guess it's time to post mine, so far I've just been reading all yours at the office.. I know should be working !

Not exactly a forest story, but the setting was just like a forest ..! I'll tell you another forest one after this one hopefully ..if you like this..

This one is very real and it happened when I was back in Africa, in a country called Zambia, we lived there for a bit as we travelled across Africa.. yes, my family is very adventurous! Out of all the weird ones, this one really freaked me out a lot, still can't understand what happened till today ..
I must have been 10 years old.. my brother and I used to ride our bikes all over the streets ..and if anyone has been to Africa .. the typical scene is a lot of bushes and trees, and animals running around ..so ya, it was wild ..Anyways, one day we were riding out bikes, and we made a friend, he was actually a Muslim kid, Irfan, very cool and he had a bike too .. so we became friends and started riding all the time.
Eventually.. we started going to his place too..his father loved gardening and they had huge guavas there .. one would easily fill you up if you were hungry! Now their house was always really creepy, huge windows..creeper plants growing all around winding up poles and windows .. always seemed like something was staring back at me when I looked at his living room windows ..
They also never kept any pictures inside, I mean of people ..family, etc .. I asked why, and they said Muslims believe that spirits look back at you through the eyes in the picture ..! that was spooky enough ..the vibe was not good in that house anyways ..
They also had a huge dog, an Alsatian, very scary but friendly to us ..always protected us while we played or took walks..
Actually, there are two parts to this story .. firstly ..they had a servant's quarters behind that had no electricity, but his servant and his family (wife and kids) lived there. One thing or another always used to happen to him .. this one time, we found a dead owl outside his shack ..I asked him what happened, he said the owl was visiting him every night..perching in the tree above, and making a sound like his baby when he would cry ..this was very freaky ..so he catapulted it down one day .. he said someone was trying to do black magic on his family..
About a week later ..we found a big dead cobra outside his shack with no head! .. again I asked him what happened .. he said he was sleeping at night, woke up because of some noise and he saw the snake's shadow as it was entering his door .. the cobra was in standing up hooded position as it entered ..now, he's got no electricity so he grabbed his panga (machete) and followed it just by the shadow and struck it down ..chopped the head off .. crazy things always happen to him ..but before I could find the next one .. something happened in my friend's house that got me running .. thats the second part ..
I rode in one day alone to visit Irfan ..nobody was in the front, so I went back side, I found his dad had strung up a goat and was proceeding to slaughter it ..! I then realized it was the time of 'Eid' for these guys ..so I said hello and went in the living room to see if my friend was there ..
Now, the layout of the place is such that if you want to go to the bedrooms from the kitchen .. you have to go through the living room .. and vice versa .. no other way whatsoever..! no hidden windows or doors ..
That day was very eerie..being a kid ..I really sensed it.. so I sat there in the living room and in a couple of mins .. his dad walks in from the kitchen with a very weird jerky walk and stale expressionless look on his face ..walking jerkily slowly just dead staring at me all the while ..! I was horrified at what was happening ..all alone ..
He kept jerking his way to the bedrooms..still just staring at me expressionless.. I didn't know what to make of this ..and I instinctively found myself standing and shaking ..a min later Irfan walks in all happy ..whats up! man .. i didn't know what to tell him ..but I sat him down and told him right away ..that his dad was in the bedroom and he's acting very strange or something ..
he laughed at me and said ..what the hell are you talking about .. you crazy ..? my dad's in the kitchen ..!
I was like ..whatttt ..? I ran to the kitchen that very second and say his dad there smiling back at me ..saying how you doing son ..?
I ran back to the bedrooms through the living room .. the only way ! ..and nobody was there ..
I don't know what I saw .. but I saw it with bone chilling clarity ..
Thats not all .. I left that day .. and returned the next day because I was somehow thinking too much and needed answers ..
I knocked on the metal gate with a rock nobody opened ..nobody seemed to be there ..so I opened the gate a bit and walked my bike in ..as I approached the house ..I saw their dog staring at me from around the corner ..ears pointed up! growling a bit ..now he has never done that to me before ..I called out for him ..he just started ..the big windows were empty and still more eerie ..!
Then I started taking a few steps backwards and started making for the gate ..I knew something was very wrong ..something was up with his place ..
As i had few steps left I looked back ..and saw their dog running ... coming at me full speed ! ..
Man .. I picked the bike and rannnnn... just managed to squeeze through and slammed the gate behind me .. the dog was growling and barking violently at me .. I yelled whats happened to you ...! and later found out that the whole family had unexpectedly left the place and moved to Malawi over night ..! never heard of them again ..
I remember passing by that house few times after ..never went inside ..too many bad vibes ..

I heard this story form my dads sister-in-law. My family and I are big campers, we camp all over in Door County and Rock Island, a little island that you take a ferry too from Washington island near Door country, WI. Anyways, my aunt and her husband always camped on rock island. Rock Island was occupied either by Indians or pioneers, but there is a little cemetery there, which has me thinking that it was pioneers. Its been awhile since I've heard the story. But anyways some of the people living on the island died of disease and sickness. Women, children, and men alike. So anyways, on a Saturday night they went to the island, even though the Island was closed on Sunday, the park ranger knew them and agreed that they could stay that day and night also. The island is very small, only about 3-5 mile radius or so by the way. The ranger also said that there would be NO ONE on the island, and he would be back to get them Monday morning. I believe that everybody else had to be off the island Saturday afternoon. So when they were on the island My aunt said that she and her husband pitched a tent and started a bonfire on Sunday night. As they sat by the bonfire they heard a girl wailing in the woods. Both of them jumped and looked to where the noise came from. They took flashlights and looked around but couldn't find anything (pretty original). Anyways later that night as they were laying in their tent, they woke up to kids screaming, laughing, and crying. they also heard adults talking and yelling. They heard footsteps outside their tent and for the rest of the night they just stared at the door with a flashlight. She told me she's never been so scared in her life, and was made a firm believer of the paranormal that night. By the way, she only camps there with more than two people and never goes near the cemetery or walking alone at night. She wonders why nothing happened Saturday night and only Sunday. Kinda creepy though.

I can't really contribute any particular "creepy" story in the forest. When I grew up in the US, nothing ultra creepy has ever happened like I have read here. I have not heard any strange loud noises nor seen any otherworldly creatures... yet, though I would love the experience if I lived through it

I have experienced the "being watched feeling" in the US forests many times. Even with people, and it could have been my young age of 13-16 where I got spooked for no logical reason. I have felt the "watching" feeling, and the silence in the forest, but nothing happened from it.

Now that I am 30, I am living just on the edge of a pine forest and in the last 2 years have never felt uneasy about going anywhere in the mountains/forests here. No matter where you go you feel fine. From my experience, and what others have told me -- if you want to be safe, go to where people are not there. (This is for this area.)

I think there could be something with the collective consciousness of the forests in the old world and now the New World in the USA. I wonder what the reasons are, and there seems to be a trend in location and odd coincidences: ie; East coast with weird farm story ghosts, and Midlands/West coast with Native Americans in the mix. Maybe people are tripping out on this to unknowingly contributing to the perpetuation and fear of this.

If it is a Bigfoot, just stop, have a smoke and a drink and maybe some sweets. Think good chill thoughts and maybe he'll join ;D

Just bumping the thread, its my favorite one on this site ever,re the unexplained/paranormal.My best so far-the member whose grandma woke up to find that thing on the cot outside with her, when she was a young girl.I swear i can picture it.I asked my best friend(American guy) who likes to hunt, if he has experienced anything creepy in the forests, and he said being stalked by a coyote.Nothing supernatural, unfortunately :-) but that did creep him out quite a bit,he says there's big ones that frequent the area, interbred wth wolves. He's in upstate NY.

Im enjoying reading all of these posts, I have a couple of experiences, not much of anything really, but still crazy nonetheless...

At one time in my life, I lived in a "Ghost town" in SE Kansas called Cato, at that time I lived in a trailer with me, my 2 brothers and my dad, with my grandparents living down the road about a quarter of a mile. Now, mind you, my grandparents were about 70-75 years old, and my grandpa was always out on the road, as was my dad (they were both long haul truck drivers) and my grandma was diabetic, so she never came down to the trailer, she would usually just call to check up on us. Anyway, one day while my dad was gone off on a run somewhere (in another state mind you...), my brothers, our friend and I were all off in our woods playing. shortly before we left, we had made a pitcher of kool-aid, it was fruit punch, I remember that clearly. We came back about 2 hours later, ready for a break and a refreshing glass of kool-aid, but when we came back in, both the pitcher and kool-aid was gone. We looked in the fridge, ect, and finally my brother found the pitcher way in the back of one of the cabinets, washed and dried. There was no residue in the sink.. The one thing I can think of is that the trailer might have been haunted, because the guy who had it before us, died in it from a mysterious illness.. which also leads me into my next story..

Different bat time, same bat place, same bat channel.. My dad was actually home for once. He had a gf over with him and they were watching battlestar galactica (one of his fav shows). I was gone off to a friends house 6 miles away, and both of my brothers were off in another town called Arma, about 10-15 miles away.. as my dad and his gf were watching tv, my dad swore that he heard the radio in my bedroom playing, and heard voices coming from us 3 boy's bedroom (on the opposite side of the trailer) So, he got up to turn off the radio, and as he got closer, the sounds got louder... when he finally opened the door to our bedroom, all he heard was silence. no noise, no radio, ect.

Ok, last one.. at this time, I was living in Indiana, out in the country, just north of Wabash... at this time, my dad was married to a woman who also had 2 kids of her own, which I still see them as brothers. One day in the early afternoon we decided we wanted to go for a walk in the woods.. It was me, my 2 brothers and my 2 stepbrothers, and they said they knew a cemetery in the woods near our house.. so as we were walking through the woods towards the cemetery, it got darker and darker (mind you, this is early afternoon) until we reached the cemetery, and by then it was creepy.. we actually stayed and hung out around the cemetery, looking at gravestones, reading out dates, names, ect.. somehow we lost track of time, and it got dark outside... and thats when we started seeing "spook" lights out in the trees.. Ill never forget it, because they would move when we walked towards them... and not just back, but left and right, and they seemed to twinkle a bit...

Ok, I lied, I promise this is the last one.. this happened about 2 years ago while I was in the military.. no woods this time, just in my barracks room... it was late night.. about 11:30, and I woke up, but I couldn't move besides my eyes.. I was pinned down by something on my chest, and it had my head pinned to its side.. and I could see something out of the corner of my eye.. but I couldnt make out what it was.. all I know is I was scared out of my wits, and tried to move with all my might and couldn't.. not one bit. When I was finally able to move, I jumped up and turned on the lights.. nothing. absolutely nothing. I couldnt go back to sleep for at least an hour or so... and when I finally could, it happened again, at about 3-4 am... I only remember the approximate times because I could see my clock beside me both times.. its happened alot throughout my lifetime... and I've even written college papers and a post here on ATS... still scares the crap out of me every time I think about it.. I still dont know what it is.. aliens, demons, ect.. I have no clue..

I did a lot of hiking by myself this summer in the mountains. I never had any issues except for getting lost at one point because I got turned around my first time out alone. I was staying at a ranch. One visit however we were all sitting by the campfire and looked up at the sky. We couldn't figure out what one roaming light was. The clouds were moving in fast and covered it up before we could figure it out but it got us all talking about UFO sightings. Made for an interesting night.

Oh, looking forward to reading this one. Before I do, I will share a story. I am sure it's nowhere near as exciting or interesting as some, but it's the only "creepy forest story" I have. We camped a LOT when I was a kid, in the Cherokee National Forest, and nothing weird ever happened. We were careful to watch out for bears and snakes, but even being up at night, in serious DARK, wasn't at all scary.

The scary place was somewhere less remote. I really cannot recall the exact location, because I was very young at the time. It was in east Tennessee, though, probably near Athens. My aunt and uncle lived, at that time, in this house WAY back in the woods. Way back to me, anyway, and certainly far enough that there were no other house lights around, and I remember my dad commenting on how far back it was. I remember the house was set up high in front, maybe on a hill in back, but I can't recall. I know the porch was fairly high. There were woods all around. Nice, thick, southeast woods. Now, keep in mind, I lived in Tennessee, and was used to woods.

Anyway, we would drive to visit this aunt and uncle (my dad's brother) fairly often, and my sister and I would play with my cousin. He was their only child. We loved visiting, and when we did, my dad and uncle would typically spend most of the night, while we were there, standing outside and talking. If they were outside, we kids had no issues going to where they were, but if they weren't, we were scared. Even if they were outside, there was NO WAY you could have talked me into venturing even a couple of feet into the trees. Even though that would have been in sight of everyone. We all seemed certain that something was in those woods. Our dads laughed about it, figuring we were scared of the dark, and nothing ever happened to them, but we were convinced; those woods weren't safe. Even in daylight, I don't think I would have gone in, and I LOVE woods.

I really don't know what we were afraid of; all I remember is impressions of something bad, maybe with sharp teeth and claws. I can remember clearly how the woods looked, standing facing them, with both dads right there, the house to the left. Even today. I am not sure I would walk there, and I don't know why. Maybe it was all imagination, on the part of three kids, or maybe we sensed some threat. I don't know. I remember how frightening the place was, though.

That aunt and uncle moved pretty soon, though, and I never saw that place as an older kid. Whatever that was, it remains a mystery. I have to add, though, that they DID have a "ghost", or something, that seemed to follow them.

Alright, now to see the rest of the thread!

OK, this isn't really "my" story but it did occur about 5 miles up the road from the house I grew up in and my mom still lives there so I am there all the time. I will say that the vernacular of the witness is completely consistent with the way certain types talk around there and I do think he is telling the truth - just my sense. At any rate it is a great Bigfoot story
(I put a snippet of it below to give you an idea; not sure if I did it right so mods please fix if I did something wrong) Actually I am skiddish about posting anything like this here - there are so many rules!

In the mirror he noticed what he thought was a cinnamon bear on the pile of stones. The witness was puzzled that the bear would not move or even look at him as he backed up because the back up alarm was blaring. About five or six feet from the pile he hit the breaks on the truck and the animal stood up on two legs. He could only see the belly of the creature and still not clearly from the effects the vibration of the truck had on the mirror. At this point the witness saw something in the mirror run across the road. He checked the passenger side mirror and saw nothing. When looking back to the driver’s mirror the other creature was gone as well.

The men went to the site and measured the footprints with a tape measure. There were many prints, although many weren’t clear a couple were distinct enough for a measurement. The larger set was about seventeen inches long and deeply embedded in the loose stone. The smaller were about ten inches. The witness said his boss was not having much of an impact trying to make footprints, he estimated the boss’ weight at about 450 to 500 lbs, so they said the creature must weigh much more than him. He also said the stride between the footprints was large enough he had to leap to cover the same distance.
