Here's what happened to a DHL A300 Airbus hit by an older SA-14 shoulder fired SAM,

The DHL Airbus 300 freighter that was hit by an anti-aircraft missile on November 22nd suffered a hit to its wing, not an engine. The missile was a Russian built SAM 14. The 22.7 pound SAM-14 (or Strela 3) is the successor to the SAM 7 (Strela). More accurate and reliable than the SAM 7, it has a larger warhead (6.5 pounds, twice that of the SAM 7). The SAM 14 has a maximum range of 4.5 kilometers and a max altitude of 9,900 feet. For best results against a jet aircraft, the missile should be fired from a shorter range (two kilometers or less). The seeker of the SAM 14 was designed to go after the smaller engines on slower moving helicopters, which can be hit at four kilometers out. A video tape, of the missile being launched by Iraqis, was given to a French reporter. The warhead apparently exploded in the wing, setting fire to the fuel tanks inside the wing. The wing was clearly on fire when the aircraft made an emergency landing. There have been nine known missile attacks on aircraft in Iraq since last May. Aircraft landing at Baghdad airport minimize their vulnerability to missile attacks by making sharp turns at 15,000 feet and "cork-screwing" down before they make their landing. This evasive maneuver, however, is not possible on take off.

Seems the old video link is dead - here's a new one.

Russian Mil-24 Helicopter shot down by Chechan with SA-16 MNAPADS

I was watching a documentary on the Russian/Afghan war, and this footage looked exactly the same as footage of Stingers hitting Russian choppers in Afghanistan. It does seem kind of easy because once the missile locks on there is almost no time for the pilot to maneuver away. In the documentary the afghan fighters were also shouting “God is Great” when they fired.

Helicopters have counter-meassures, so why did this Mi-24 not use them? I do believe they atleast have flares...

Well the SA-16 is as all MANPADS an IR/UV seeker, so unless you actually see the missile launch there is no way you'd see it coming. It is a compleltey passive system with no emmissions for ECM to detect. The SA-16 also tracks in UV light as well so to minimise it being decoyed by flares.

You're right, Liberals call them rebels while Conservatives call them terrorists - that's the difference.

These were not even US troops, and these Chechens are the same people that started the horrendous school killing in Russia.

Boo Chechen rebels

And russia is the victim here
How did Russia end that hostage crises again? Both sides use tactics that would turn any sane persons stomach.

I believe the Russian special forces stormed the school and tried to rescue their children while the Chechens detonated explosives placed around the children killing over 100.

The only thing that's turning my stomach is you suggesting that the Russians were somehow to blame for the deaths of their own children.

As far as I'm concerned Chechnya is just another craphole that deserves to be turned into another self illuminating, glass topped parking lot. You can add it to the list that includes Northern Ireland, Somalia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Zimbabwe.

You cannot condemn a region because it is infested with filth. Its a very difficult job to sift through and remove the filth.
