Isreal moving towards Gaza border, 30000 troops called up - 15-Nov-2012

The story is that 30,000 troops have been called up and that troops are moving towards gaza for a possible offensive.

Israeli forces are moving toward the Gaza border, according to the Associated Press, in a prelude to a possible ground offensive. The Israeli defence minister has approved the call-up of 30,000 reservists, Sky News has confirmed with the Israeli Defence Force. Sky's Middle East Correspondent Sam Kiley said: "In British terms, that is pretty close to 10 brigades - a vast number of troops. These will be armour, infantry and specialists in support, but most likely to fill in the gaps likely to be left as troops are moved down towards Gaza. "There's already been an increase in movement of ground troops close to Gaza, the movement of tanks and so on. "If there is going to be a ground offensive, those troops have got to come from somewhere else and they would need to be back-filled.

They have approved the call up of 30,000 troops, but they haven't actually called them up it seems. They can call up all 30,000, or they can call up 10, or anywhere in between. They will call them up when they have a better idea of how many they need, and where they need them.

If theyre going terrorist hunting, they may need 30,000 troops. It will be like Vietnam minus the jungle, because the terrorists look like everyone else, you won't know who they all are. IMO this is just going to fuel the fire for Hamas to get face time with the U.N..

I don't actually trust many news sources, sky uses israel encryption for the TV, NDS. It was one of the first things I could find as a link in the OP. I would have preferred original AP release as source as Sky used.

BBC are reporting on their ticker right now that there are "unconfirmed" reports of troops moving towards the border, they put it with BREAKING at the lead of the heading (on TV as of typing this post).

Apart from that I don't really have much to say on the subject but I hope it does not escalate into something no one can control and spreads to other countries getting involved which will lead to more escalation and more agro in the world.

The troops that may be called up are mostly going to do the routine jobs in the background, while the troops they free up will be used in any offensive. This kind of thing has happened before recently (the Gaza offensive), and will probably happen again in the not too distant future.
