i disagree. i'm not thinking just about it's present form, i'm just saying it's furthering the precedent of content information filtering.

today it's just an optional plugin for people short on time(time is money so we're all a little short obviously), tomorrow it becomes the norm and you won't read nothing unfiltered.

what may look like a good idea today may not turn out to be so over time.
i repeat, this may set up a precedent which in time may turn in to outright censorship

it's my opinion and it's your site, you can advertise what you want, i'm not forced of buying in to it.

i dont
i think its pretty obnoxious and it draws your eyes toward the edges of the page..... you know away from what you are trying to read

if your ads are drawing more attention than the content of your site youre probably doing it wrong
(seriously though ats you have a bad habit of allowing obnoxious advertisements..... i understand you need to make money but you need to have some kind of guidelines about things like autoplay videos and disproportionately bright colors)

Yay! More dumbing down of the idiot masses who have absolutely no attention span and can't be bothered to actually read something!

And we wonder why more and more of our kids are growing up illiterate.

How about people learn to read, and people stop facilitating needless laziness. It takes minutes to read a page, and the user benefits from that. Crushing everything into a bite-sized chunk for lazy people is not a good way to improve literacy, and how does a program decide what is important to the reader anyway?

I hope it dies a slow and painful death.

Now Im no high powered ad exec or anything but to me this blast of bright color and internet lingo tells me whatever this thing does, even if it cures cancer, I dont want any part of it.

So apparently there are people out there who feel exactly the opposite way and experience this obnoxious punch in the face and immediately click on over to get whatever it is?

I hate ads and I hate people who like/fall for them.

Consider the dayglo ridiculousness ABP'd.

While I agree with all of your post I thought those two lines were worth repeating

Yup, some people go orange crazy around here
There is a house nearby that is all orange and white with a matching TN Volunteers logo van.

Back on topic -

Curious to see how this works. Anyone tried the beta yet?

As far as the "dumbing down" posts--and I guess we could add "short attention span" capitulator--I don't necessarily see it that way. It's a tool that will facilitate short-attention spans of course, but if it works well it could also be a boon for serious researchers. Kinda like the internet; depends on how you use it.

I predict it will be a great success if it works...but I don't wanna try it if I have to hook into the FB monster. Otherwise:

I still don't understand.
How do I try it? How does it work?

Supposedly you go here and "like" it on facebook to get beta access. Beta means still in testing, use at own risk. No way I am doing it myself, and exposing family/friends on facebook to it

There's something to be said about people resilient to change. You are all members of the best conspiracy site on the internet, yet you have some of the most closed minds. You'll believe in UFOs, Paranormal activity, and 9/11 conspiracies, but yet refuse to Deny Ignorance.

The owners of this site are experimenting AND developing new technology. You guys are in on the cutting edge of heuristic processing, the very edge of fringe AI. Yes, I said that.

Natural language processing is one of the major hurdles to developing AI, the ability to pass a Turing Test, and yet you guys are whining like little babies because your screen looks different. Why not do a little research, like you would for any other topic, and report back in later? Quit spouting off knee jerk reactions like it's something bad.

Why not find out more about what this is all about. You'll find you SHOULD be proud of SkepticOverlord, for GIVING us the opportunity to be included before this goes mainstream. Someday, if you think about it, you'll be able to say, "Yeah, I was there."

Honestly, with the T&Cs, all the rules in place, do you think that the owners would do something foolish and trivial? No, not at all. They run a tight ship around here, and anything they come out with should be appreciated as cutting edge. It is. Pay attention to the tech that they are developing, and have a bit of respect for the owners.

This is a test, this is only a test.

If this had been an actual shtf emergency, the thread you just encountered would have been followed by massive computer crashes and electrical blackouts.

This concludes this test of the shtf network.

Hey, if they can get this thing to make bullet-point powerpoints out of the executive summaries, it'll revolutionize writing reports for command staff.

"Son, I don't read s--t anymore, just give me four bullet points and let's roll!"

OMG THE MAYANS WERE RIGHT. ATS IS ORANGE!!!

Relax folks... same content as always. Just with a reference to something that SO has put a lot of work and time into. The orange background changes nothing other than messing with our heads and what we've grown accustomed to.

This is a good thing, BTW ( Preparing for a bit of change ).... As ATS is about due for a site upgrade and will likely change format soon anyway.

I personally hate page borders like this. I would estimate that it takes up half the damn page between the top and sides. How could it be accepted that this an adequate tradeoff for subscriber to this site. I am thinking of changing careers just so I don't have to be on the damn net all day long. This type of crap is driving me seriously crazier.

Those that don't see what everyone is talking about probably have the page zoomed so that ad sits outside the borders. The page will center in Firefox but not in IE.

I just want to make it clear the content of the ad does not bother me at all. The presentation of it is what is problematic. he plug in does look like it is quite useful. Many of these threads contain loads of irrelevant stuff. The only worry is that it will like filter some relevant info as well as possibly stifle the minority view.

I can see the real benefit of this for serious research, but also a pitfall for casual research.. the baby bird syndrome.A sloth huh... couldnt you have used a Gecko..oh wait..

SOme facts about SLoths.. they are not lazy, nor do they sleep much. They are actually very smart. Theyre fast when they wish to be and only poop/pee-pee about once a week. I dunno about the elimination part, but for the other attributes, a sloth seems pretty clever to use as this plug ins "mascot"

I don't know about the plugin, but the border color doesn't bother me. It kind of reminds me of University of Texas burnt orange. Go Longhorns!

I thought at first it was a caricature of Skeptic Overlord, but it doesn't have the mustache. The head's tilted the wrong way, too.
