Errr...people HAVE posted derogatory cartoons of Muhammad (I myself remember regular postings of the bomb-turban image) on these forums before. AND
linked to them. And as you can see, they are doing so in this very thread.
South Park depicted Muhammad (not offensively or negatively, but still pretty....absurdly, making him some sort of fireball wizard), and had no
backlash or hatred, although they removed that episode from the site after the Danish Cartoon controversy thing.
That is the thing, though, there are almost no positive or neutral images of Muhammad. The OP makes the case that you can make fun of all the other
religions, and nothing would happen.
Thing is...when is the last time you saw an image offensively portraying Buddha? Or Moses or Abraham? Or Guru Nanak? Or Shiva? You may occasionally
(more often for Jesus, I guess, considering the prevalence of Christianity) come across images involving said figures that makes a joke or pointing
out the hypocrisy of the followers, but rarely anything offensive.
Here is an experiment to try. Go to google.com and click "Images".
Search for "Jesus"
I do not get a single offensive image as far down as I can go. They're all just drawings or depictions (usually mistaken ones) of what people think
Jesus would've looked like. Eventually, google image starts showing Hispanic people named "Jesus".
Search for "Moses"
Again, I get not a single offensive image as far down as I go. Mostly just drawings, or images of Charleton Heston in the role in The Ten
Commandments. Eventually, it starts showing contemporary people named Moses.
Search for "Shiva"
No offensive images as far down as I can go. Just drawings or photographs of statues, eventually leading to images of some indian lady, and some comic
book character named "Lady Shiva".
Search for "Guru Nanak"
No offensive images, just pictures of Guru Nanak. Eventually becomes pictures of Sikh people or some Sikh ceremony.
Search for "Buddha"
No offensive images again. I get drawings, or photographs of Buddha as far down as I go.
Now search for "Muhammad"
I get a couple of images of calligraphy with Muhammad's name, a persian-style picture, a photograph of the Bangladeshi Nobel Peace Prize winner
Muhammad Yunus, and then at the very start of the 2nd row some old european drawing of Muhammad in hell, and the bomb-turban image, followed by
numerous other offensive drawings/cartoons.
Also, some interesting recent incidents involving freedom of speech vs religion:
Guy from Greece arrested for creating a facebook page that made fun of
a Greek Orthodox saint
A punk band was arrested, convicted, and are now set to serve 2 years
in one of their harshest prisons after getting up in front in a church (when there was no service and just a few worshippers) and singing
The California State Assembly passed a bipartisan
resolution (sponsored by 66 of the 88 members of the lower house) demanded that "Anti-Semitic activity should not be tolerated.
This would be cool and all, I guess (although against the Freedom of Speech laws in the US, which don't make exclusions for race or religion), and
while it is non-binding, under the list of "Anti-Semitic activity", is stuff like "Accusations that the Israeli government is guilty of 'crimes
against humanity'","Accusations that Israel has engaged in 'ethnic cleansing'" and "boycott, divestment and sanctions campaigns against Israel"
So yeah...I'm not sure what you're talking about.
PS: Someone mentioned Muslims not caring about offenses done to Jesus... I've pointed this out before, and I'll do it again, Pakistan banned "The Da
Vinci Code" when it came out, as it would be offensive to Christians (most Christians in Pakistan are of Catholic persuasion).
