The incident....they are so careful in their wording...is in the neighborhood pictured above. The school is where they are bussing the evacuated people and doing medical. Ambulances were sent there from the neighborhood awhile ago too.

Hmm.. Someone calling for the arson unit too?

I also read it might be an old unsafe gas pipe underground that covers a lot if area that is what exploded ( just a theory by a local ) Could that be why they are blocking off the whole neighborhood and it was heard far out? A large amount of area compromised? Going to listen to the Mayor then will check back..

That is the neighborhood. They've closed down the whole neighborhood and residents are being transported to Mary Bryan Elementary school..looks about 1/2 mile away by Google Earth. I've counted 4 Battalions on fire, whatever that means in Indianapolis. Could be a lot or not? ..and 2 DHS commanders by the different unit numbers now having been used.

They also were requesting someone call the local hospitals to see if anyone self evacuated. Maybe related to the arson call? or just verifying evacuated houses.... Hmm

And...That's Car "1200" just saying they are assuming command. Earlier, I'd heard call himself DHS 12?

I have a feeling you are right and there has to be more to this than they are releasing so far. Especially hearing what Wrabbit is reporting makes it sound very...questionable.
I'm still wondering why Homeland Security is on the scene? The arson Wrabbit mentioned maybe? I don't know, but wish I did!!

most likely for a group briefing as the chatter was quiet following the command.

personally, if i had to guess, ground movement that caused multiple cracks in a main gas line.
i'm a little thrown off by the request for an arson team, however, considering the source is yet to be discovered, the request seems reasonable enough.

i sure hope it isn't the result of arson but i suppose we'll see.
fyi, i was within 1/2 mile proximity of an apt explosion and no, it wasn't felt 2 miles away ... heard, yes, felt, no.

sounds like there are multiple operations (approx 5) and a recent request for Red Cross to be present. this isn't going to end anytime soon.

Playing devil's advocate for a minute, they also had someone reporting a structural collapse at the same time as this.. a short time ago...and that spooked them badly here. It was reported on the fire channel shortly there after the "collapse" was a few bricks knocked out of someone's garage wall when they ran into it.

So..it sounds like one hell of a BIG blast..whatever it was but has to be pretty past tense because they've said a couple times their command post is in front of the main address it originated at. They've said the addy a few times now...but they've also been careful most of the time so I'm not the one to say it either way.

...still.. they are acting a little odd.. I won't say that isn't true. Hmm They have been saying they're assembling a names list for whoever is demanding it over the radio. Surely ..they wouldn't say the names over the air but may give numbers?

WISH-TV just said that it is NOT confirmed to be a gas explosion and that the gas explosion idea is the main theory going around now ... but, NOT confirmed.

I was thrown out of bed once, by a gas explosion over 60 miles away. It was a gas well that blew though, and leveled the small town.

Doing some math: if this was heard at 10 miles away, and had a sound intensity of about 1 Watt/m2 (enough to give things a really good shake) at that distance, the power emitted is around 3 billion watts. That is 3 Gigawatts.

At a half-watt @ 5-miles it would be 406 million watts of power emitted, or 406 Megawatts.

That kind of energy release is one helluva blast.

The ONLY thing I have heard them say on the Fire/Rescue channel here in any reference to cause is Gas. They didn't say it WAS the cause, but one of the ongoing problems with sporadic gas fires and seemed odd in how they were talking about it. I never heard anything else mentioned and in fact, they've been strangely careful in wording for anything about that. They DID call for an arson unit....and I wouldn't know if that's important or routine.
