Now that I read the other news, it looks like an obvious hoax.

You probably shouldn't have done that. I think this thread should be trashed. It might be some kind of phishing scam.

rt.com...

This article mentions a 30% impact chance for an asteroid in 2013, but otherwise seems unrelated.

I'm pretty certain this is a hoax.

Someone's going to lose their job.

Wait! Don't leave us! We gotta give you ur 40 stars first! Waaaaaait!

The CLOSEST star in the Taurus constellation is 30.72 light years away.

That's about 290627433000000 KM away from Earth.
This asteroid is supposedly travelling at 50000KM/Hour

290627433000000 / 50000 = 5812548660
5812548660 / 24 = 242189527.5
242189527.5 / 365 = 663532.9

It would take about 663533 years to reach us, I wouldn't worry about it really.

I noticed that "Astrophysisist" mistake too, immediately got me suspicious. As does the time stamp of Nov 4, 23:28 (in the Dutch SS) ...if you look at the "Latest News" to the right there is another headline with that timestamp, but it is talking about Syria. I can't prove it explicitly, but my gut tells me this is doctored.

The article from Al Jazeera makes no sense.

"Almost scrap the surface of distant star"?

could have been an attempted hoax, or a disinfo ploy made to "rile" up the crazy conspiracy theorists. according to some who read the zeta chats, this could also be the announcement that was supposed to come in early october. either way it piqued my curiosity.

Maybe not trashed, unless OP is the responsible party that started the story.

It may serve a good purpose for others hearing about this and turning to ATS for real answers... leaving it up may also help keep down an influx of related threads, believing it has yet to be posted...

I love how, when presented with the idea that NASA has announced that a Asteroid may well collide with OUR PLANET, all people can seem to talk about is the word "Nibiru" and instantly discredit EVERYTHING based on that word being uttered by them.

Can we call the Asteroid "Professor Poopy Pants"?
Will that make it possible to actually discuss what is being presented?
What is a name we can call this thing so we can all focus on the real issue here?

Nope, you posted another screen cap, which is awesome.

It' just that this looks to be a hoax, and you've added more fuel to the speculation bonfire.
