Michigan police search for possible sniper firing onto highway

www.foxnews.com

Officers have begun pulling over and questioning drivers in four Michigan counties in the hopes of catching a man suspected of shooting at other motorists nearly two dozen times over the past two weeks, including one driver who was wounded over the weekend.

They had some 22 victims over the past few days. Luckily no one killed, yet.
The cops are looking for a late 90's dark colored 4 door car and if your driving one of those expect to have lots of people watching you very closely.

"We've had 22 victims that have tried to identify a vehicle traveling at 60 to 70 mph," he said. "We're looking for more suspicious activities that go with four-door vehicles and those darker in color -- somebody that's pulled over on the side of a road or coming out of a wood line on the side of a freeway. Or if you see the same car driving around with no sense of purpose.

What with Sandy this story got pushed to the back burner.

i live close to where this is happening, and as of right now police are clueless as to who is doing this or why. They believe the suspect is shooting while driving the opposite direction of the people he is shooting at. The accuracy of the shooter to be driving 70 mph going to the opposite way of the victims, also going 70 mph, leads me to think this guy is ex military or just a really damn good shot.

Needless to say people are on edge around here

Just my thoughts, and being Married to a Marine. if he were a trained marksman there would have been more people wounded, even from a moving car. Might be the reason no ones been hit or seen this guy is he's trying to be sneaky, quick pop-shoot out the window then acts all cool like???

I guess we'll just have to wait until they catch the bastard to see right?

Yes wait and see, I hear what you are saying about more being injured i just don't think the guy is really out to kill anyone, to shoot at that many cars and not kill anyone i think is more then luck. Thanks for sharing the story.

He's not a sniper...he's drivin around shooting...up and down a long stretch in a variety of locations NW of Detroit, at all different times and vehicles.

Myself and my wife arent taking the highways again till they catch him...

It would be unbelievably difficult to hit a moving car from another moving car going in the opposite direction. Hitting a stationary object from a slow moving vehicle is very difficult, hitting a car going 70 while in a car going 70 is down right hard to do.

Anyone with firearms experience, especially military i believe will tell you the same thing. For that matter, hitting a stationary object while stationary is hard enough, not just any idiot can do it.

That's ridiculous.
You're more likely to die falling down your stairs than you are to be shot by some nut.

Meh, what do I know. This is a country full of morons who think terrorists are hiding under their beds.

Cant fight insanity with reason.

ETA:

This "happened" about 15 years ago in a town I used to live in. I put happened in quotes because it turns out it was a spot on the freeway where some gravel fell from a truck and the repeated reports of people claiming to have been shot at (whacked by flying stones) compounded into a frenzy or paranoid madness with staties combing every mile and all the abutting property for days.

I also live very close to where this is happening. I am not letting my wife drive to work on th freeways right now and everywhere I go I am strapped and ready. I don't think this guy is a good shot at all. Someone who has gone off the deep end I bet. Not surprised with the way things are around here. People are very tense around here right now though and I hope this guys shoots at the wrong person and gets smoked in the process.

This isn't a case of rocks falling. This is a man who is targeting people on a select section of the freeway. Sooner or later one of his rounds could hit the mark and kill someone. Or kill someone and cause a wreck that hurts or kills many others. People are not overfearing on this one. This is something to be worried about if you travel the area.

To avoid travel is definitely over-fearing.

The space is so great, the number of targets so great, the likelihood of a fatal hit is so slim that it's barely statistically significant.

Humans over-fear all the time when the numbers dont justify it.

When that same travel sans the rogue shooter is already a leading cause of death in this country adding the shooter to the mix barely changes the risk factor at all.

Now if that shooter were specifically gunning for you the factor would jump quite a bit but so far it's just random.

Don't worry there's lots of state boys over there weather you see them or not. Lots as in nearly ALL from Bay City south are cruzing the area in all kinds of cars

I agree with you that it's a little extreme to avoid those roads but at the same time whats it hurt? I mean if someone is shooting cars only on the highway doesn't it make sense to avoid them? A little delay in time is surely worth a drastically reduced chance in getting shot isn't it?

It sounds paranoid and over reactive but it also seems to be the logical choice.

Its not "ridiculous", its preventative security. And she and I both have CCW permits...but that doesnt help when a round goes through your windshield on a dark highway out of nowhere.

Its kind like taking all the curtain and shades off in your home, turning on all the lights and sitting there naked where everyone can see you...but you cant see them.

Looks like they may have found the person responsible for this sniping:

The man, a 43-year-old Wixom man who has not been identified, was arrested on unspecified charges at his home Monday night but has not been formally charged as of Tuesday afternoon. The man, however, drives a car matching a description provided by one of the victims in a series of shootings along the Interstate 96 corridor, according to the task force From The Detroit News: www.detroitnews.com...

They haven't released his name yet.

A tip led authorities to serve the search warrant on a home on the 1500 block of Kings Crown Court in Wixom on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation. From The Detroit News: www.detroitnews.com...
