~ WELCOME TO THE SURVIVAL THREAD ~

==============================================================

Hi, Welcome to my thread, I thought id open up a discussion & share thoughts on how ATS members would react in a Life Threating Natural Disaster from what they only have in there house right this very moment, After reading about the Breaking News on the Frankenstorm it made me think about what i would do & what i have that will help me at this very moment, So to get some ideas on what i should do to prepare for a natural disaster, i will listen to my follow ATS members & take notes.

To make this more interesting i will give you a scenario must answer & then give your opinion on Natural Disaster Preparation.

-------------------------------------------------

You are sitting at your computer reading this topic, Then you hear a loud noise outside, It suddenly starts to rain heavily with dark black greenish clouds covering your location, It starts to get windy & you then find the rain rapidly coming down for hours, then WOOSHHHHH YOUR WHOLE ROOF GETS BLOWN OFF & AWAY! you are now left inside your house with no roof while heavy rain falls down on your head, everything starts to flood, & a neighbor comes to the rescue for help in his little blow up boat, everything in your house is still intact but you can only take a couple of important items on the little boat with you, WHAT WOULD YOU GRAB?

Few light weighted Items i would grab are,

* Phone
* Can of Bake Beans
* Pocket Knife
* Toilet Paper
* First Aid Kit

My bug out bag has everything I need in it.
Thats all I would grab because I am already packed for an emergency.

Have your bag ready and you won't have to choose 3 items.
Plan ahead.

Assuming I can't choose my B.O.B. as one of the items?

If I were totally unprepared for such an event (what a dummy!), and assuming it was a normal weather event and not some kind of crazy Hollywood type storm, then I would grab the stuff off my dresser (Wallet with ID, Phone, Pocket Knife, etc), the box of trashbags from under the sink, and the Bic lighters and anything else I could grab from the junk drawer in the kitchen.

Now, of course, if this were really an event at my real home, I would grab my B.O.B., my Shotgun, and my dog.

I have a bag thats small and ready to go for such things. That would be all I need for the first week. Skip the phone i really don't worry about such things. Then again it's not possible for me to flood. lake Michigan is 100 feet west and 100 feet down. going to be a good thread though

My Bug out Bag, My giant protective dog and a box of condoms. Why condoms? There may be a whole lot of end of the world sex going on and I don't want a disease that is incurable, just in case we all survive.

And the BOB in my house has a brother in my truck as well.

What items? My phone, my nomad 7 solar panel, and the cat.

Why the phone? because my droid has a 32 gig microSD card with digital copies of most of my extensive bushcraft library on it. Why the panel? To keep the phone charged of course, and to also have the small fixed blade knife I keep in the little pouch on the inside and the flint steel right next to it.

Why the cat? Because I wouldn't be able to live with myself if i abandoned him after 10 years.

All of this is assuming I'd leave. All of my gear is in waterproof totes and I have enough tarps/fixins to put a temporary roof back on most of the house. The roomie's bedroom is just gonna have to be roofless, though.

Welp for my area I've planned differently, living in the desert, land-locked and on a big hill means no blow-up boat is going to paddle up to my door. But because of those reasons mentioned above, I've already planned my escape:

My Avalanche setup for mild off-road, my six 5 gallon gas containers that are always full and ready with stabilized gas (so I have enough to make it more than 1000 miles away from home without buying fuel), an extra full-size spare besides the stock one, 6 cases of bottled water, two large plastic tubs worth of canned and durable food goods, two tanks of propane and a propane-powered camping burner, and as much clothing/shoes as I can grab in a hurry, and finally my Beretta and 1000 rounds. The truck already has straps, bungees, tools, first aid kit, map book, and flashlights.

Did I miss anything?

Loved ones
My BoB Bag
My Weapons (1 rifle 1 pistol)

Although flooding would not really be problem where i live, it would take a biblical type storm to get flooding of that kind where a boat would be needed around here.

Yep, ya can never forget the four legged furry friend.

And as far as the scenario is played out, I can see that bringing the phone could be a good thing.

Doesn't it depend on exact situation? I might not have time to grab anything. Also placement of items in home matter. For instance, my computer is upstairs but my bob is downstairs. Would I be able to go downstairs to get it? I'm pretty sure I would only be able to reach my pets in this situation because they follow me around the home and my phone because it is always with me. Also would my neighbor be willing to wait for me during this vicious storm so that I can grab a few things? Excellent question and I will now have to rethink all my emergency plans because this isn't something that I considered.
