I've been watching outside, and we have a little problem where I live. Light pollution, mostly sodium vapor lights, and some very light clouds, which still allow the stars to shine through..But the sky is a little washed out.

Try watching the Ustream linked above...I've seen a few dim ones in a short time.

In case the sky clears, in which direction is this to view? East?

Yes, generally East, But don't cheat yourself. Try to get a view of as much sky as possible.
The the point of origin of the trails will be close to Orion...But they can appear just about anywhere in the sky.

Looks like the camera is streaming again tonight...Patchy clouds here again.
