The video was a little tough to get through, especially the drawn out sequences of amateurish reenactments, but I wanted to see it in its entirety
because I am familiar with Shamokin and have wondered myself about what it would take to revitalize it. At the end I was curious about the details in
the prospectus that they kept mentioning, but unfortunately they were never addressed.
I also thought that there had to be more to the story than two philanthropic guys looking to effect a positive change to this community by investing
in quality rental housing. Remember that the principal partner in the venture had never even been to Shamokin according to the video. I also found it
odd when he briefly mentioned in the video that he wanted to bring in a mixed martial arts/wrestling event that was turned down.
After a little digging I learned that a major component to their prospectus is having the city allow them to create and operate "adult arcades"
which are essentially small casinos. If approved, they propose to share the wealth with the city by paying a 10% tax on proceeds. Evidently
Pennsylvania State officials are not convinced that this is even legal.
While I'm sure that there is a lot of palm greasing and corruption going on at the City level in Shamokin, I'm not sure that these guys are all that
they claim to be. Why not be upfront about the "adult arcade" issue? What other components of their prospectus are dubious and less than
philanthropic?
