I thought he said something to the effect of:

"We have to get really high up to see how small we are" or something like that.

This guy had the best edge of the seat ever.

You are calculating average speed. His speed would vary.

Yes I was calculating average speed and thank you - I didn't consider that his speed might vary. That makes sense after all they said about the various levels and effects and air pressures.

Sidenote:
Here are two of the first mainstream news urls I grabbed.

www.bbc.co.uk...

www.msnbc.msn.com...

And this one tells about team member - Dr. Clark who lost his wife in the Columbia disaster at the bottom of the article. www.guardian.co.uk...

Just tuned in - running live on Discovery Channel, as well. Looks like he's at approx. 65800ft and what, about an hour or so to altitude/jump height? Whew...

It's cool to see you doing some math and investigating on your own. This whole project was pretty amazing.

That certainly could have been part of it too. Hopefully they will publish it in the big story.

He's jumping again already?

Kidding, if you just tuned in you're watching a recording dear friend.

What what goes through that guys mind?

Wakes up one morning and thought "damn wouldn't it be cool to jump over 120,000 feet".

So many things could have gone wrong, glad he made it tho.

Yeah the guy has some brass alright.

He made the sound barrier! YEAH!!!

preliminary data

Records Set:
highest jump - longest freefall - maximum vert velocity without a parachute

meters/second 373
1342.8 kilometers per hour
839 miles per hour
mach 1.24
freefall time was 4 minutes and 20 seconds
and I didn't catch the freefall miles.

So neat - I am jealous of course.

I have jumped from 35k feet before with the military and even from that altitude you can actually see the earth’s curvature. Its surreal and amazing the calmness of freefall from that altitude. Then there is the HAHO jump which is just a 30-40 minute canopy ride with areal navigation thrown in for good measure.

Most of my (1800 or so) jumps are civilian style jumps from 14,999 (max altitude for non-oxygen jumps) or so only 60 seconds of freefall max on those unless you have the suits that slow you down and let you "fly" - I never had one.

Amazing what we can do when we put our minds to something - humans that is...

ETA: Awesome – he reached the speed of most fighter bombers with his body.

Wow, some seriously crazy stuff there. Props to that man, for having the nerves to even THINK about doing such a thing. Hopefully he will be remembered for a long time. Fantastic achievement. I hope to see more of these, just more spread out, like achievements forever remembered in space. With each year, we seem to be getting closer and closer with technology to be in space.
