The lack of flu shots.

My wife, who is now pregnant, went for a flu shot today at Public, after being unable to get any from her doctors. I mention her pregnancy because it is well known that the flu shots will be only given to those 65+, under 16 months, pregnant or with severe conditions.

They were to start at 3pm, she got there at 2pm.
They had 225 flu shots, 3 thousand people showed up, all of which qualified in the above terms.

She was one of the last 15 people to get a shot, and got home at 9pm.

She said that many people in the crowd were talking, and are voting against Bush because of this. They naturally are mad that there are not shots, and that we do not make flu vaccines here in the USA. They blame Bush.

I didn't think much of this isolated incident when I first saw it this morning, but I've just seen a summary of headlines from swing states and OLD PEOPLE ARE MAD!

I'm up to my neck in elderly people anyway, so I knew they were close to the boiling point even in my red state. Just mention the price of gas or state of immigration and they're ready overthrow the government.

They already do not like whatever drug benefit Bush has promised to help in 2006. Why? Two reasons. They don't understand it, and it's NOT NOW. They are yanked about drug prices anyway. Don't understand why the same American drugs cost less in librul Canada. Bottom line, they just don't understand what's wrong. What's broke. All they know is, they can't get their flu shots now on top of this.

And Bush can run
but he can't blame the challenger for this one. Though the elderly WILL blame whoever they damn well want for any little thing and you can't talk 'em out of it.

The elderly are like the ultimate conspiracy theorists. They indeed do know everything. And will kick your ass for correcting them. Kerry really could talk and talk to Florida's retirees on this issue and win it. Big time. We'll see.

First of all, we can blame the president, yes, because this is all part of the broo ha ha within the Bush administration. Its said by scientists that of the estimated 36,000 said to have the flu every year and die, ONLY 700 died, because they were too old, or sick already.

Why are they stating there is such a huge amount of deaths? I dont know. I listenend to Coast to Coast last week, and they had a show on this subject. Also, if you feel you have to have the shot, go to a reputable doctor, and stay away from Supermarkets, pharmacies, free clinics, etc.
Seems some of the contaminated stuff is already here in the US.

This 700 figure has been pretty consistent for the past 5 years.

Well, after reading this other current thread on the flu vaccine shortage, quite frankly I wouldn't go near it this year.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Apparently there is some serious concern over the safety of it and at least two posters have reported family members getting sick immediately after it and one seems rather serious.

Either scenario, shortage or the safety of what is available could definately have a huge impact on the election. Seems to me that the population angriest about the whole situation is the population that consistenly hits the polls.

This will definately be interesting to watch unfold politically. Of course, if Bush suddenly comes up with a way of obtaining enough vaccines to save the day.......

Why would the vaccine shortage cost bush the election? How is it related to bush? how will a nationalized health care system result in lots more companies making flu vaccines? THe Vaccine is going to be free? People aren't going to be able to sue when it causes problems? Are that many more people going to take it if someone else is president? There are only two companies that make the vaccine, because of liability concerns and lack of public interest (ie profit). How will nationalized health care address that?

Nothing like reveling in ignorant misconception RANT, well suited to your Liberal mantra... John Kerry at any cost... Those "old people" are a double edged sword, and aren't as dumb as you hope they will be on November 2nd. Shameless promotion of a healthcare issue because you see it as a means to sway voters, despite the fact that it's cause is beyond the scope of any person, public or private. Just file this one next to the "Draft Is Coming Scare" for credibility.

Unlike my esteemed Liberal colleague, I'll offer an answer to the problem.

FluMist.

A flu vaccine for healthy children and adults, ages 5-49 (free up those conventional vaccines for the elderly), needle free, and safely tested on your favorite simian for two years.

Just read the paper.

www.theglobeandmail.com...
Ontario and Alberta are cracking down on the growing number of Americans who are scrambling to get flu shots in Canada as the anxiety over a shortage of vaccine in the United States spreads north of the border.

With half of the U.S. supply choked off by quality-control problems, clinics such as the border outpost of the Northwestern Health Unit in Fort Frances, Ont., have been getting a steady steam of calls from worried Americans

So what is going to happen now?

Favorite Simian? Wondered what happened to the guy who played Kramer on Seinfeld. Everyone but him had/has a spinoff show.

Yeah I dont see how having a national healthcare system would solve the flu shot shortage. However, I do like the idea of a national healthcare system. A system that would take care of the basic needs of everyone, and then they could have a private healthcare system plan where you can buy into. So those 40 milllion Americans would at least have the basic coverage.

The funnny thing about this was, before it was announced there was a shortage, very few people actually wanted the shot. I remember last year they were *advertising* to try and get people to take it. A rather hyped up issue.

Since Michael Richards is a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason (SJ); surely a future ruler of the World would be able to finagle a spin off, at least a pilot for Cosmos sake?
I mean what Illuminati worth his salt couldn't put the squeeze on some puny TV execs. Such is the fickleness of life...

Very good point Miner,

I am one of those that don't get a flu shot, and the shortage is making me wanting to have one.

I bet this year because the shortage is going to be the worst flu season in history.

People are going to pop in and out in the emergency rooms because they feel that they have the symptoms of the flu.

.................

Well if it is, then 10s of millions of people here in the US will die...so Im hoping this is one of your normal predictions.

As for October surprise I think it more likely the clintonistas are going to release the rest of Kerrys military records.....they are petitioning the NV government right now

I don't do predictions like you do, and beside I don't care much for the flu vaccine either, and for the 10s of million that are going to die, well that is your prediction no mine, and people DOES die from the flu every year.

liberal = caring for the people
conservative = caring for themselves

thanks,
drfunk

While I often refere to the liberals as the "mamby pamby attitude" I sincerley believe they play an important role in the "yin yang" sort of way. and as you stated they may have attemted in a half a$$ way to push the issue, but they have not
Maybe in the far distant future when either by genetics or by breeding, aggression towards other human beings is dispelled from our race, liberals will run the utopian society they long for. Until that time conservatives will have to hold the line on reality!

If you're between the ages of 15 and 60 and healthy, why do you need a flu shot anyway? I think people are overly paranoid about germs.

The truth be known, everlastingnoitall and Kwintz have pointed out the real reasons for the shortage of flu vaccine.

But people will not care about the facts. They want to believe a lying presidential candidate, who knows he is lying to the public when he blames Bush, but does not care about the citizenry. He will lie to your face if it helps to get him elected. That's how much he respects the American public.

Time to change my signature.

Actually you bet this year would be the worst flu season ever.I was simply referring to the pandemic ~28% of the American population was affected, and ~675,000 died. As the population is ~100x larger, then for it to be the worst ever would mean over 60 million dead Americans. So that would be your prediction, and I already realize people die from the flu...I also realize that unfortunately you might be right, as I heard some compelling arguments that believe the next pandemic to be overdue.

Sorry kholmes I though you were just making you know, I agree with you but also I see that because the shortage people will be worry about the flu making more trips than necessary to the emergency rooms afraid that they may have the flu, when in reality if is any new strength of the flu it will affect all of us regardless of flu vaccine or no.

Sorry for the comment I was sarcastic.

As much as I don't like Bush, I don't think this has anything to do with him.

Personally I would not get the flu shot. My dad got the flu shot one year and he was in bed with the flu for 3 weeks. My great grandmother was 102 when she got her first flu shot. She got sick and died shortly after. Not worth it to me. I'll get some Theralflu or something.

deeprivergal,

whoa that is sad, the problem with the flu vaccine is that it will help ease symptoms of the flu but will not stop a new strengh of the flu from geting you sick.

The last time I had it was 4 years ago and I felt like my lungs were not able to get enough air, and the pain in my back was horrible, that year my husband and my children had it too, and my husband gets the vaccine every year, but he will not get it this year.
