The Israeli army’s chief of staff states that in the past three years, “US taxpayers have contributed more to the Israeli defense budget than Israeli taxpayers,” according to a report in the Jerusalem Post, a prominent Israeli newspaper.
According to the report, Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi made the statement during a speech on September 11th. In it he emphasized: “We must preserve ties with the United States. I believe this is a security necessity.”

It's hard for me to get excited over this. Foreign aid is 1% of our budget. Israel gets 1/5 of that. We have treaty obligations to protect them. You stick by your allies when they're in trouble, and Congress would never cut them off entirely. Besides, we don't send them money, we send them military items that our workers have built.
I just don't see the outrage.

Interesting choice of date for the speech mentioned above. Tell you what, we'll leave that kettle of fish aside for now, or at least I will.
But the rest of it...is madness. Complete insanity.
The US pays for Israel in so many ways. It pays in raw cash. It pays in global reputation as refusal to treat fairly with the Palestinians tarnishes our global good name. Our halls of power are crawling with Israeli shills and lobbyists intent on wrangling yet more money and spurring the tired US war-horse to fight for their cause. Propagandists whip up the war fury against Muslims and Arabs so our sons and daugters will bleed for Israel. Our presidential candidates have to go on bended knee before the Wailing Wall like suplicants. Paid preachers like John Haggee take money from Israel to pump out "Christian Zionist" propaganda in churches. There is outrage in the press when the President of the USA doesn't re-arrange his schedule to meet with the Israeli President every time he snaps his fingers.
Meanwhile we have more homeless than ever before, including more CHILDREN without homes. Why Israel should get a DIME while there is a single homeless child in America is beyond me. Budgets are more indebted than ever before. Bankruptcies soar, the government plunges into the red. Municipalities cut everything from teachers to police, while roads and bridges crumble from lack of funds for upkeep. Yet there's always plenty of money for Israel. Funny how that works, isn't it?
We pay and pay and pay, and pay some more. And what do we get back in return? Where is the advantage for the US in this "special relationship?" Is the USA nothing but a big dumb cash-cow to be bled out and kicked and bull-whipped into doing Israel's bidding?
Where will it end? How much of this are you going to stand for, America?

Its not the world fault you become like this.
We have treaty obligations to protect them. You stick by your allies when they're in trouble . . .

Dear jmdewey60,
YOU ARE RIGHT. I WAS WRONG. I'M SORRY.
I have heard Israel referred to as an "ally" so often, and by so many presidents, that I took those statements literally. But I was wrong. There is no mutual defense treaty between the two, so they are not technically allies.
Thank you, thank you, very much for setting me straight. That's what ATS is for, and you've done a great job of it.
With respect,

Israel accounts for a whopping one-third of all US foreign aid.. Meanwhile, with a population of 7.8 million, they account for a little more that one-tenth of one percent of global population. Hmmmm.
