Technology is really getting scary, now a British company has designed a surveillance camera that can identify people by their signature gait.

A new biometric “gait recognition” system has been developed by Britain’s National Physical Laboratory, meaning that individuals can now be recognized and located by their “signature” walk.

Serious privacy concerns have been aired about the system and its potential surveillance applications.

New recognition camera

I have to agree with the privacy concerns regarding the application of these cameras. We are truly headed for a Big Brother, Orwellian 1984 future where our every move is monitored. With these cameras TPTB can monitor and pic you out in a croud from a distance without needing to see your face for recognition.

That's a new one.
Not sure on the accuracy of it when some people walk the same as others. Still though its concerning that they are finding ways besides iris scans or chips etc.

This makes them able to recognize you further away

Iris scans and facial recognition systems are seen as insufficient when it comes to identifying individuals from a longer distance

This is linked to the person’s identity. A computer can then produce a list of all the other places that the person has visited, and the occasions they have been

Even a set of twins have their own unique characteristics, so you can be sure of everyone having a unique walk that our eyes and brain can't compute, however in the world of electronics millions of calculations are made in the blink of an eye which analyze and encode. Thisnk of it as watching a very slow motion video clip, all those details that you missed at a real speed become so very obvious. Woe is us.

if that tech becomes mainstream you're going to have to quickly learn the art of disguise if you like your privacy

While in denial over needing corrective lenses my freshman year of college, I realized there were many compensatory behaviors which allowed me to "work around" needing glasses for my distance vision. One of these behaviors was learning to recognize people from a distance simply by their gait. I was very surprised by how quickly I could pair a walk with a name, given how unique and unmistakable one was by their walk. Even when the face could have been described as a nondescript sphere - the walk, stumble, half-jog and stagger couldn't be mistaken.
