What's below those islands or the Economic sphere of influence you get by "owning" them? Why do you think nations are making claims in the Arctic?

This entire region has been claimed by 7 or 8 different countries, not just Japan and China. China and Vietnam have had several naval incidents in the region involving shooting at each other. There are huge mineral and oil resources in the area that they are all after. They are well outside the territorial waters of China, Japan, and a number of countries claiming them, but that hasn't stopped them. Sooner or later there is going to be a fight over them. They are between 120 nautical miles, and 200 nautical miles from Taiwan, Japan, and China.

These particular set of islands were annexed by Japan in the 1890s. They were deserted after 1940, when a business built on them failed, and everyone left. The US took over them during the war, but they reverted back to Japanese control in 1972. The oil reserves were found in the late 1960s. China and Taiwan both claimed ownership of the islands after they reverted to Japan.

The islands were owned by the Kurihara family. They bought them from the Tatsuhiro family (the Tatsuhiro family began the original business that failed in 1940 on them). The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications leased Uotsuri, Minami-Kojima and Kita-Kojima. The Japanese Defense Ministry had leased Kuba and allowed the US to use it as a bombing range. The Japanese gov't already owned Taisho. This year the Japanese Government bought Minami-Kojima, Kita-Kojima, and Uotsuri from the Kurihara family.

Thanks, I already knew most of that. Pity the U.S. Gave them back....sure could use those resources I bet. And no one would be staking other claims on it.

Diaoyu island is only 4.3km long but China is taking this very seriously because they consider Japan's intrusion as a violation of their territory since they say they own this island, also, the location of it is very relevant as a military position.
China does not take Japan's military abilities lightly, they believe Japan has a very strong military and that they are crazy so...
I just hope they don't drag us into this mess.

China claimed the islands AFTER they were discovered to be resouce rich. They were owned by private Japanese citizens before, and China never cared. All you have to do is look at what China claims as their territorial waters to see who is the wrong party.

And now Taiwan is getting in on the act!

DOZENS of Taiwanese boats including six coastguard vessels have entered territorial waters around bitterly disputed East China Sea islands, Japanese coastguards say.

China and Taiwan both became interested in the islands after they were handed back to Japan in 1972.

If you think this is bad, look more into the Spratly Islands, and see how many people are trying to claim those since they found a massive oil and mineral deposit under them.

This is the wisest move from Chinese side.Now the Japanese patrol ships can do nothing .
