American prison labor means longer unemployment lines

This is how you legalise slavery folks. It has been said for a long time now that the Chinese model of paying people a dollar day is the vision for this country. We have the world's largest prison population, and with the prison being for profit, that doesn't look like it's going to change any time soon. I say give it 10 years and the only people working in America are going to be those in prison making less than a dollar a day. All we see now is our industry being shipped over seas so scum like Steve Jobs can use slave labor to sell us trinkets in the west... and then be praised for it.

Welcome to the new world, same as the old world. And CEOs get away with it while they throw the little guy behind bars for selling raw milk.

Wait.. Americans usually want to pay taxes. How are prisons supposed to be financed?

its not slave labour. they are in prison.

some of them are lifers.

but they should be paid a normal wage and pay for their own incarceration.

paying .15 cents an hour while the prison owner pockets massive profits is b.s.

all these so called "private" prisons collect huge tax benefits and subsidies.

Calling a cow a donkey doesn't make it a donkey. A large portion of the US prison population is locked away for non violent offenses (such as using a plant the wrong way or selling raw milk). Prisoner or not, paying someone .15 cents an hour is slave labor. They are no less human than you or I and should be paid minimum wage so that they can pay for their own stay and not live off the tax payer.

I wouldn't mind seeing prisoners working for a little of nothing, but I know that the majority of people in prison are not their because they are violent offenders, or burglars, or anyone who violates the rights of other people. Those are the types of people who should be in prison, and those are the types of people who don't deserve the benefits that the state gives to its citizens, because they don't want to respect the rights of other citizens. But people there for non-violent offenses like possession are part of the black hole of tax dollars.

And all of the private prisons love it, more profits for them!

In all reality what do you expect when you lock up non violent offenders and destroy the rest of their life. There are reasons the prison system is referred to as crime college. And rightfully so because once you get out you may as well resort to using those new skills in breaking the law you learned because any meaningful job is now out of your reach.

This is the result of a change in our criminal Justice System. It has went from being a means of punishment, rehabilitation and release to one of profit for a select few. Prosecutors pursue cases they shouldn't, because they have to be tough on crime to be reelected. Judges have to be tough on crime to be reelected. Mandatory sentences have replaced judicial wisdom. It is a no win situation and is only going to get worse as those that don't bear the scarlet letter realize they need that advantage to just stay employed.
