Eight out of 10 countries favour Kerry for president

Alan Travis, home affairs editor
Friday October 15, 2004

George Bush has squandered a wealth of sympathy around the world towards America since September 11 with public opinion in 10 leading countries - including some of its closest allies - growing more hostile to the United States while he has been in office.
According to a survey, voters in eight out of the 10 countries, including Britain, want to see the Democrat challenger, John Kerry, defeat President Bush in next month's US presidential election.

The poll, conducted by 10 of the world's leading newspapers, including France's Le Monde, Japan's Asahi Shimbun, Canada's La Presse, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Guardian, also shows that on balance world opinion does not believe that the war in Iraq has made a positive contribution to the fight against terror.

The results show that in Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Japan, Spain and South Korea a majority of voters share a rejection of the Iraq invasion, contempt for the Bush administration, a growing hostility to the US and a not-too-strong endorsement of Mr Kerry. But they all make a clear distinction between this kind of anti-Americanism and expressing a dislike of American people. On average 68% of those polled say they have a favourable opinion of Americans.

The 10-country poll suggests that rarely has an American administration faced such isolation and lack of public support amongst its closest allies.

The only exceptions to this trend are the Israelis - who back Bush 2-1 over Kerry and see the US as their security umbrella - and the Russians who, despite their traditional anti-Americanism, recorded unexpectedly favourable attitudes towards the US in the survey conducted in the immediate aftermath of the Beslan tragedy.

Here is what I believe. The world doesn't hate the American public. It only hate the American government for what it has become and the handling of the war. It's no wonder the world hates the Bush Administration. So for those who don't understand why the world hates us or the current Administration, this article might clear up a few things for you.

In a poll held by a swedish newspaper recently 84% of the swedes would like to see Kerry rather than Bush as the next president. So you can put Sweden in that list as well.

George W. Bush is President of the United States, not President of Earth. John Kerry is running for President of the United States, not President of Earth.

Why should any foreigner feel any "loyalty" towards the president of the USA? And why should every country hate you? And why are you so angry?

Unfortunatly here in the UK we have a saying, when America sneezes we all catch a cold.

In other words your country is so powerful that you guys cant do anything without sending ripples across the entire planet.

Yet the US wields such power like a 5 year old child with his Dads gun.

PS: you guys think the sunshines out of Tony Blairs ass, well we got news for you.

a) 2/3 of UK dudes hare Bush
b) 2/3rds of UK dudes hate Blair.
c) we want no part of a US war. And given the choice wed reject US friendship for the chance to pull all our troops hot to go home and so what you YOUR war.

Perhaps we should pass a UN test when we want to do anything with international implications from now on.

I could care less if the international community hates america. I love America. My friends love America. My family loves America. It's not our fault we've got to be the "father figure" and take care of our "children", the f'd up rogue nations and Europeon whiners.

Most people are patriots, no matter what country their in. If a survey was conducted in the US asking if we had a favorable opinion of the French, what do you think the results would be?

I hate sounding like an arrogant american, but i can tell you that it's GREAT to live in the US of A baby!

Kwintz:

I agree with you completely. I am an American, and there is
nothing arrogant about stating we are Americans.

The entire world can turn their backs on us, and hate us,
smear us, make fun of us, but when they need financial aid,
they are the first to whine, whine, whine.
When the free hand outs stop, they will be the first to want to
cozy on up with us. And when they no longer have the financial
and technological aid from us, they won't be able to build WMD
and missiles, and bombs to throw at us, built with OUR money,
the poor middle of the road, working, taxed to death Americans.

The way I see it, now that Howard was re-elected during the Australian election, our future is riding on Kerry getting in. His presidency might be terrible, but right now I dont consider anything to be worse than Bush keeping it.

My family has been here since 1610. I don't like to be hated by other Countries but at the same time I don't lose any sleep over it. We are the first to help out when someone is in need and we are generous almost to a fault. If other Nations want to focus on the negative and not see all the positive things we do, so be it. We were disliked long before Bush was in office and I'm sure we will be disliked long after Bush leaves office.

I went to France for the first time in 1984. I was horrified at how rude people were to me when they realized that I was American. I was only 15 and it was a shock because I had traveled to Hong Kong and England the previous year and didn't have any problems.

Based on how I was treated in France I highly doubt that they cared what my opinon of them was. I know that when people come to visit my Country I am polite and kind to them (including those that are here ILLEGALLY) so if someone in another Country has a problem with me because I'm American, oh well, their opinion of me is none of my business anyway!
