Perhaps adding to pre-existing sculptures of similar ilk and in what appears to have sparked division amongst locals, Princess Anne has unveiled this unique piece of artwork. It takes approximately 20 minutes to walk around - roughly the same time as a wander around the perimeter of the Pentagon.

Artist & Landscape Architect Charles Jencks' impressions:

The nudie is called "The Lady of the North" or "Northumberlandia" - taken from the area in which she rests, and personally appears quite impressive.

Maybe this is simply the UK's cosmic response to the spate of crop circles lately given that it is best viewed from the air
.

Whatever the reason behind its commissioning, it is sure to be added to the UK tourists' list of sites to see.

ETA: Thanks ATS member Freeborn for the reminder regarding similar pre-existing sculptures in the UK

I like it.

At the end of the day, they may as well make something nice from the slag piles...........

Have to say though, what is that at the top left of the picture? It kind of looks like a spare set of breasts!

I think the figure has more in common with the old hill figures which can be seen throughout England, examples of which are Uffington White Horse and Cerne Abbas Giant.

Though officially known as Lady Of The North apparently locals are calling this landscape as Slag Alice and Jordan amongst other's.

I remember when The Angel Of The North was first unveiled it too received quite a bit of criticism but is now proudly considered as an iconic image of the region.

Who knows how this new piece of 'art' will be viewed in years to come.

Slag Alice! That is just genius and exactly why i love our humour!

I really do think it is a good idea though. Grew up in the middle of the Selby coalfield. Totally flat there so you see every new slag pile rising from miles away........could of done with some of this back then.

We need horses, fertility men and women........any others i am missing? I think for the next one they should screw with future archeologists...........scatter neolithic axe heads all over the site and throw in some medieval rubbish.....in future centuries the archeologists will be speculating about the rich cultural heritage of the site!

As a total aside (but linked by the mining industry) did anyone see the One Show on Friday last week? They were in a potash dump with the nature guy. Basically, they have huge piles of potash as a byproduct from the power stations and everyone worries about pollution, etc. Anyway, the guys at this one dump have found that Sand Martins (birds) love nesting in it, particularly if they allow grass to grow on the mounds.

I know it is only one site, but when added to this mine art sculpture, maybe some heads in that industry are starting to see benefits in giving something back in other areas.........well, you never know..........

I love it and it is nicely in keeping with our stuff of old, like the horse and giant.
Pity we don't have more of this type of thing popping up.

People did a Pendle witch walk not long ago for charity, it was a roaring success and on Gallows Hill they put in huge white old fashioned type the date 1612 to mark the 400th anniversary. Unfortunately it was only done in white paper or fabric, they should have limed it and kept it for posterity. Would look fabulous.

Great now we are going to get a bunch of "horny for Earth women" crop circles from the ET's.

Like it wasnt bad enough with the abductions and intrusive examinations.

We all know earth girls are the hottest in the galaxy.

I mean even the gods couldnt keep their hands off our better halves.
