Anyone have any info on the mystic seven society that originated at wesleyan univeristy? I'm a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Syracuse and we were founded by the Temple of the Pen and Scroll, one of the seven temples of the Mystic Seven. Just wanted to find out more info on them, hard to find anything.

Perhaps you should ask your fellow brothers from other chapter i.e. Ivy league schools.

I would except for the fact that just my chapter of DKE was founded by the 7. Beta Theta Pi was directly founded from the Mystic Seven, my chapter formed after the mystic seven dissolved, and the remaining members petitioned for a charter from DKE in 1871. I'm interested in any info any has regarding the history, rituals, and traditions of the 7 society (not the UVA secret society). I know they are based in Hebrew, rather than Greek. I'll share info w/ anyone who has it, email [email protected]

***MYSTIC SEVEN***

Spgaul,
The Mystic Seven was formed in 1837. Beta Theta Pi (Founded 1839), was not formed from the Mystic Seven, but assimilated the society several years later.

That is also untrue, the Mystic Seven was founded at UGA in 1846, 7 years after the founding of Beta Theta Pi at Miami. What kind of information are you looking for? If you want secrets thats going to be hard to come by.

Wont be hard at all..

Because of the Communist Scare back in the 50-60's ALL founding information, ritual information and so forth on ALL College societies are in fact listed plain as day in the Library of Congress.

Sorry Rock,

But this is a myth and is well documented in this article by Eric Rousey (a Brother Kappa Alpha of mine who heard the same story)

www.geocities.com...

While some information may be in the LOC, the ritual info isn't necessarily. In the case of K.A., our ritual books are privately printed and bound by the National Office and distributed to the subordinate chapters...as I'd venture many other fraternities/sororities are.

While its true that rituals are not in the Library of Congress, there are copies of many of the fraternities and sororities located at the University of Illinois. Just look up their Archives website and you will find a listing of many groups rituals there.

Mystical Seven was not founded at UGA in 1846, but Wesleyan University in 1837. The UGA Temple of the Mystical Seven was founded in 1846.

I am also seeking information, if anyone has anything else to share as well about the Mystical Seven.

Email me at [email protected]

Thanks.

Brother Greek,

It has been many years since I last trod the paths of Piety Hill, probably before you were born. I was a member of the Beta Theta Pi chapter at S.U. in the late 70's. At that time the tradition was that any Beta brother initiated into a Beta chapter that had been a Mystic Seven temple when they merged(S.U.), also became a brother in the Mystic Seven Society. Our temple was the Temple of the Scroll and Pen and was originally founded when what is now S.U. was Genesee College located in Lima,NY, south of Rochester. When I was an active I also was interested in The Mystic Seven.

You might try contacting Beta Theta Pi's Administrative Office in Oxford, Ohio to see what they might offer.

I have had the opportunity to study the Mystic 7 rituals at length. They are locked in the archives underneath Beta Theta Pi's administrative office in Oxford, OH. One of those rituals is still in use today. Overall, much of the rituals from the Mystic 7 were not incorporated into Beta Theta Pi's ritual. In their entirety the rituals of the mystic 7 were made up of several "ordeals". Each ordeal teaching a new lesson through a differing scene. The scenes borrowed heavily from literature and hymns. The Mystic 7 rituals were written by hand, several volumes deep which are available for any initiated Beta Theta Pi.

The Mystic Seven Society (formerly known as the Mystical Seven) officially merged with Beta Theta Pi Fraternity in 1889. Several years before this official merger took place, there were two temples (one of which was the temple at Syracuse) which split after some arguments took place between their members about which fraternities they wanted to apply to for admission. It is not uncommon for chapters of Beta Theta Pi at universities which once hosted a mystic/mystical temple to carry on the traditions of these old societies.

It has been my understanding that there are very few chapters of Beta that are truly "mystics". there are also a few other fraternities who claim to have connections to the skull and bones and pen and scroll mystics.

I have actually seen a few documents about the real mystic chapters of Beta, but much other information out there is hearsay.

One thing I am interested in is whether or not the Mystic 7's have any connection with the 7 society at UVA. I have heard many times they do not, nor did they ever. However, there are so many similarities/coincidences that i think there may be some connection. Maybe it's just a copy-cat thing, or maybe there's more to it.

In addition to contacting Beta Theta Pi, also contact any other fraternities that have connection to the Mystic Seven. Contact university archives where Mystic Seven had chapters. (I've done this for defunct/local sororities and had wonderful help, not to mention getting further info.)

Just for you, OP, I am going through google book search for info.

Baird's 1879- founded after the war in the south, chap at Mississippi University, which died out- also claims there is a chapter at Virginia.

Google books also has snippets of other pertinent resources.

Good luck and let us know what you find!

There are a few chapters that have real claims to the mystic 7. The problem is that the alumni who are in those societies are very quiet about it.

The Mystic 7 do still exist. you will not be able to find information unless you are one. It is one of the biggest secrets to share, hence why you cannot find any. Try narrowing your search to the original 7 chapters... you'd be surprised what you'd find, if you personally email someone such as the ritual chair..... Just saying
