I came across this article last night and my initial reaction was an incredulous ..really???!

A white Texas man claims that allowing a black man, or in his words a “negroidal,” to bag his groceries is a violation of his religious and civil rights.

According to News Journal, Dewitt R. Thomas filed a handwritten nine-page federal lawsuit against Keith Langston, owner of Two Rivers Grocery and Market after being banned from the grocery store.

He stated in the lawsuit that he told an African-American grocery bagger, “Wait a minute, don’t touch my groceries. I can’t have someone negroidal touch my food. It’s against my creed.” The cashier yelled at him and asked him to take his groceries and leave.

Thomas claims that he follows a religion called Vedism which encompasses Hinduism.

“Vedism translates into knowledge. I am not this way because I am ignorant. Ignorance is the enemy … White people are to be protected under the civil rights law just as anyone else,” Thomas said. “It would be the same as if you asked that a congoid (a person from west/central Africa) not touch your food.”

Langston decided that he would serve Thomas with a civil trespass warning the next time he was on the premises. When Thomas returned the two day later, he saw the same young black man bagging groceries and again requested that a “negro” not handle his goods.

“My question is, why after I told them how I felt and that it was against my creed did this negroid try to impress himself upon me and try to handle my groceries again,” Thomas said.

Langston immediately called the police, an employee locked the doors and Thomas was served. “

"He was banned because he was using racial slurs, but he has turned it into a religious thing,” Langston said.

As I read through the reader comments following the article the majority of them expressed opinions regarding the article were just what could have predicted. Some mentioned that at first they were offended but then couldn't help but laugh at his ignorance. He was widely ridiculed and called out as a racist, people mused over the dilemma he would be faced with if he were in need of life saving medical care and the only doctor available was black. Pretty much the same consensus over and over again.

I have to admit that my line of thinking was along the same lines until I came across one comment stating that the Vedic religion does not instruct one to avoid contact with those of other races, this struck a familiar chord in me and I realized that his actions might not be as dumb or ignorant as they think he is. Racists yes, but ignorant maybe not so.

When the issue of gay rights is on the table one of the biggest arguments in opposition of granting rights to them is that it goes against the religious beliefs of others, and you can't say that the argument has not provided a foothold of power in their attempts to prevent this from happening.

How many would agree that what the members of the Westboro Baptist Church have done at military funerals is offensive and goes against how the majority of Christians believe they are to behave under such circumstances? How many Christians have decried their behavior as unChristian? Has it stopped them from being able to claim their actions are based on their Christian faith, and that prohibiting them from those actions violates their right to religious freedom?

Nope, so if claiming a violation of ones right to religious freedom and tagging that on to being a Christian can allow people to do hateful things to others, wouldn't it stand to reason that using the same argument, the violation of religious freedom might provide legal justification for people to fly their racist flag under color of faith?

People might consider him simply ignorant, but based on the aforementioned issues and precedents he might just have a legal leg to stand on. Troubling

Why is this a national news story? Oh right, because right now the purpose of the media is to inflame racial tensions. I'm sure no black person in the country has called a white person a racial name. I know this because there is no media story about it.

What an ignorant moron. I'd have banned him(and anyone else using racial slurs) from my store too. If he didn't want a black person "touching" his food he's free to shop elsewhere. Idiot.

The old guy should be allowed his opinion.

Anything else is just social engineering.

If we just ignore these types of people (both black and white) then they become irrelavent in our society.

Personally? I'd run up and not only touch his food, I'd give him a hug!

Personally, I believe that this man has a right to his beliefs and whatever he uses to justify it is irrelevant. He has the right to believe and say what he wants.

Conversely, the store owner has a right to ask this man to stay away from his shop if he cannot respect his employees.

You can't stop people from doing and saying stupid things.....they're just gonna do it anyway.

That's laughable. It reminds me of those stories about disconnected Japanese soldiers tenaciously defending some tiny Pacific island outpost, many years after the end of WWII. Nobody got around to letting them know the war was over.

This fella is defending his island outpost of total ignorance for all he's worth.I'll bet there's even racist bigots out there who think this guy is an idiot.

I'm guessing that he doesn't dine out very much, probably just the monthly Klan Supper

Has he considered also, that the items he purchased have probably been touched numerous times from production to delivery, by negroidalisticalist hands?

I wonder if he realises there are probably what he refers to as "negroidals" who produce and package his groceries before they get to the store. What a moron.

Actually that was brought up a number of times in the comments. It was suggested that he learn to grow his own food

It drives me nuts when people convert the Bill of Rights into a guarantee from the annoyance of others.

If he doesn't want a black man to serve him, then go elsewhere.

What a complete waste of time and resources....

I swear the whole country has gone mad-- left, right, top, bottom...and everything in between.

Exactly! (Boy, I'm agreeing with you a lot lately.
) Each person is free to think and say what they want, as long as it isn't against the law. The grocery store can ban him if they want. If he had been less abrasive, he could have bagged his own groceries and still be visiting the store.

I think it's hilarious that he's totally blind to who touched his food BEFORE it came to the store!
Does he think groceries are grown in the back room? He probably buys groceries that have been touched by many black hands.

This is such OLD thinking! I remember my mother telling me not to play with the black girls at school (early 60s) because they were "dirty". I love you, mom, but you sure loaded me up with some crap baggage!

I always bag my own so that I don't end up with 30 bags instead of the 10 required for my goods. Pet peeve of mine they don't teach bagging anymore. I learned in High School square bags, cans, boxes then some light items - bottom to top. It's a damn art.

I remember my Grandmother having a # fit when my Mom bought me the black GI Joe in the late 60's to complete my collection. I also remember her telling me to not eat after touching money since "a black person could have touched it".

Funny thing was where we lived there were no blacks at all - I never saw one until we played a team in Regional’s in football from the city.

the whole concept of racism goes right under my head. i just don't get it and never have. it remains one of the stumbling blocks people need to overcome, if we are to progress constructively as a species. and yes, it seems a lot of current reportage is designed to fan the flames and keep the racist fire burning. it must be extinguished.
