Arizona, the most racist state I have ever been to.

I was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM and I had never lived anywhere else in the union until recently.

I was offered a job in Arizona and I took it.

The town where I live is just outside of Sedona.

Being in the medical field, I deal with patients on a daily basis.

I get to make small talk with these people.

Some tell me things about AZ, growing up there and the like.

Some tell me their life story.

And some get around to telling me about their political beliefs.

Never in my life have I ever heard the most blatant racist comments about our president and others of black or Mexican decent.

The thing is, it's ok to disagree with the president on a political level.

But these people straight up hate the man because he is black.

I've had patients call him "'n-word' boy", "that thing", "black ##SNIPPED##".

This really caught me off guard having growing up in the state right next door.

Sure there was racism in NM. But not like I see it in AZ.

The police in Albuquerque will pull you over and harass you no matter what you look like.

The police in AZ pull you over, they are looking for dark people.

I was clearly speeding, got pulled over. Police ask for my license. I show him. He looks at it for a second. Let's me go.

I am a guy of "Hispanic" decent. But I'm light skinned.

I hate the word "Hispanic". But that's a whole other topic.

Well anyway. My wife and I just had a baby. And while at the hospital I had to ring a doorbell to get back on the floor to get back to my wife's hospital room.

After ringing the bell and waiting for a while for them to let me in, the door finally opened.

As I walked passed the nurses station and the nurse says to me " Sorry about that, the way the light was hitting you, you looked "Hispanic".

I was like " but I am Hispanic?"

She didn't say anything more.

Down here "Hispanic" means "Dark Mexican"

In Albuquerque , a lot of us are pure Spanish or like me Spanish, Greek, Jew.

It's so off putting I want to move back home or to a different state to work.

Anyone else in northern AZ have similar stories?

Just wanted to add that this is not a rant. I originally posted this in General Chit Chat. A mod moved it here.

I'm not mad. I'm not ranting.

Just observing the way it is here in AZ and wanted to know if anyone else experienced things like this.

sorry you were profiled at the hospital dude, sorry.

But Idaho used to be the most racist, if you will. Maybe with Obama as pres, and GIVEN THE CURRENT CIRCUMSTANCES of the POTUS, and his (lack) of imigration laws to protect the residents of the Country,

SURELY YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE ARE BEING RACIST. am I wrong?

its about CONTEXT.

also, is Obama even Black, or is he mixed, like most of us?

ALL people can be racist. Its a known fact (among SOME mexicans) that SOME Mexicans dont like Blacks. But no one seems to care about that--they only care if theres a white person saying these things.

So, i dont know--maybe try to understand the State you moved to. If the racism bothers you, id move;

This is the essence of the Union and freedom.

Its not illegal to be racist. Its illegal to hurt others because of said racism.

Ive been to Idaho and AZ--both have brown people and white people and sometimes both can be ignorant and racist.

but yeah, its wack if you were profiled at the hospital.

I am sorry for laughing, but what that nurse said could be the most stupid thing I have heard in a while.
Perhaps time for you to move back to Spain my friend. Nice weather, healthy food, polite Police Officers, free medical care, etc etc.
I will buy you a caña y unas tapas when you arrive

Crazy thing is, I work at that hospital.

I also forgot to mention, one of my patients said he would like to put a bullet in Obama.

I do realize that Mexicans don't like black people.

But "Hispanics" don't like others "Hispanics" as well.

It's the word "Hispanic" that groups people together that have nothing in common but a language most don't even speak.

Yeah man. When I told my wife what she said, we both busted out laughing.

It's not like I want to leave my country, I love my country.

It's just the "weirdness" here in Arizona.

Like I said before NM does have racism.

But AZ, is blatant about it.

Its a real concern for a minority in America, I don't think many realize that.

In my recent home search I made sure to move to a diverse area, and I traveled every inch of it to see how well I was received.

I am Hispanic, and my wife is Filipino coming from So Ca we almost never encounter overt racism so when we where traveling all over the western states it was surprising to encounter it.

It was one reason We avoided Arizona, as when I went through there in my search I was pulled over several times "Just cause" .

Got to the point I left, I know where Im not welcomed.

Its a damn shame in this day and age we have to deal with such ignorance.

Sometimes laughing is the best way to handle nutty things.

I just moved from California to Arizona. They are worst in California, they will not let you have your own opinion. I'm not caucasian and if you tell me Arizona is racist, then I tell you California is Communist.

Give me a break.

I was born and raised in SOCA.

I've been in Arizona for 20 years.

There is no comparison between CA and AZ. AZ still thinks they are part of the old west.
