'Face-kinis' craze hits China beaches this summer

No, they are not bank robbers, super heroes or Mexican wrestlers. Nor are they protesters showing their support for the balaclava-wearing Pussy Riot band in Russia.

Underneath these bright-colored ski masks are middle-aged Chinese woman braving public ridicule in order to protect their pallid skin from damaging rays at the beach, NPR reported.

OMG, this is for real. Despite looking like a beach full of burns victims this is this summers latest craze. Out with the nice brimmed hat, in with the face kini!

Now, I know no self respecting beach bunny likes to head to the shore without at least nice looking swimwear, but this is taking the P*?

I don't think it's gonna catch on in Aus.................but then again..............?

I hear it's because the current fashion trend in China goes towards the 'pale skin' variety.

I can respect that...but this looks outright creepy.

you might be on to something, because without sunlight. VItamin D deficiency is only a matter of time, so unless their food contains enough, which is unlikely, degenerative disease rates will skyrocket.

Looks like something that would go over well in Muslim nations.

They should really be wearing sunglasses; after a nice long afternoon at the beach they could end up looking like raccoons once the area around their eyes got enough sun. Heh, I'll bet they'll be wearing shades then!

The hispanic culture along the border here in the US is similar in intent. My mother in law gets mad at my wife because my wife will go out to get a little darker. To my mother in law, keeping your skin as pale as possible is an issue of vanity.

When you are hispanic, your skin will darken in the sun quickly. If you are a hispanic that works out in the fields, you will have this dark skin. Therefore, having lighter skin is a statement of labor class, culturally. If, as a woman, you have lighter skin....it means you don't have to work in the field chopping weeds from the rows of cotton.

Of course, i tell my wife I married a Mexican for that beautiful caramel colored skin...and she keeps laying out.

My wife is Japanese, I tell her something quite similar. Colour is beautiful, imagine a world with no colour.

*Blinks* And I thought I went through a whole heap of effort to stay pale. What happened to an old fashioned parasol or big floppy hat?.

I have to say though I am seriously creeped out by the little kid wearing one but I lost a baby nephew to horrific burns and the sight of a kiddie in a mask like that just brings it all back. He'd have been 19 now. Meh!

It's funny how the most difficult traits to obtain and maintain are also the most valuable? And here I am with thirty pounds I gained quitting smoking waiting for the famine so I can be the pretty girl again.
