Murder suspect George Zimmerman, whose plight prompted thousands of well-wishers to donate a flood of money — more than a collective $250,000 — is nearly broke, his lawyer said Monday, and plans to ask the public to pay for his defense. He intends to ask the court to declare Zimmerman indigent, an official finding that the 28-year-old Sanford man is broke and needs the public to pay his legal expenses.

The fund that George Zimmerman created online after his arrest in April on charges that he killed Trayvon Martin has fallen from $250,000 to $70,000, lawyer Mark O'Mara told USA Today. The donations paid $100,000 for Zimmerman's bond, about $50,000 for security guards for him and his wife, Shelly, and about $30,000 for rent, utilities and other living expenses, O'Mara said. Some of the balance has been designated for other expenses, and what is left probably won't cover experts and other costs of the case, the lawyer said. O'Mara said he hasn't been paid.

If Zimmerman is having trouble covering his legal fees that is a personal problem. He is not poor and therefore should not be asking the public to pay for his defense. Especially considering how quickly he spent the money that was donated to him initially. Most criminals only get the defense they can pay for, sometimes the only choice for them is to get a public defender. Why should Zimmerman recieve special treatment?

George Zimmerman is back in custody after his bail was revoked for lying about his finances. Today, Zimmerman's lawyer Mark O'Mara admitted that his client intentionally misled the court.
In a statement posted to the defense team's official website, O'Mara explained the situation and his request for a new bond hearing.
Zimmerman's defense team will file a motion today for a second bond hearing. While Mr. Zimmerman acknowledges that he allowed his financial situation to be misstated in court, the defense will emphasize that in all other regards, Mr. Zimmerman has been forthright and cooperative.
The statement goes on to say that Zimmerman realized a significant sum had been raised, though his defense team claims his truth-bending was a result of "fear, mistrust, and confusion."
Apparently, a total of $204,000 was raised, with $150,000 of that put into the Legal Defense Fund. The rest — well, allow O'Mara to explain.
