Hey all,

When i went to the court in Almelo (Netherlands) as a witness in a case, I saw the following painting in the hall and felt like sharing this with you. Amazing that this kind of stuff is in a courthouse.

Below the image there is the text: "regelrecht" translation would be: "directly"
The painting is made by Gierveld in 1992

[Edit]
Here is the link to the original sized picture:

Really..?

I think the subject matter of that painting is probably spot on with the cases heard in that very court house...they're just keepin' it real.

It looks to be about the devil we have on one shoulder and the angel on the other. Do you know what the book in the left guy is?
Seems she is leaning toward going to the evil side and the Good side is saddened and losing ground.

Would know for sure if the book title was known.

So that would make sense in a Court, as a warning.

I love those tacky yellow and black striped pants the devil is wearing!

Just goes to show, all lawyers are devils!

Maybe they have a painting of sharks playing poker on black velvet in another room.

Star and Flag just because I love the painting!

I see artwork of massive interest in most buildings such as courts all over the world......nothing unusual in it being in a dutch court, in fact I'd expect such works there!

Like the painting

The cloven hoofed figure with horns could also be Pan the Pagan God
The atmosphere of theater is great - The painting can be interpreted in many ways

I see Pan pointing to heaven much like Da Vinci painted saints.
This is where Pan or Nature gets it's commands whilst the clown represents the law of man
The woman is most endearing (nice tit) - is she a victim to be represented by the clown lawyer

Does this mean that Natural law is not mans law

I envy you. This is my thought process about this painting.
"Oh. A girl............
Ehmm, what else? Oh, devil, clown, books, puppets. Awful pants. Blue hooves? What it means? Have no idea."
I never could get meaning of art unless it is on a level of simplistic landscapes and food paintings
.

Creepy pic and even creepier that it is in a courthouse.

What can I say..except a picture paints a thousand words , and we can see who some in the upper echelons of society love to promote.

Whats with Snow White, and the dwarves, in the Background?

I am seeing that, right?

I need my eyes checked.

The interpretation of art is not an exact science - I sometimes despair when I see some expert waffling on about a piece of art.
Unless you know the artist it is not possible to know exactly what his intended message or meaning is.
It only means what it means to the viewer in reality

I have had people place their interpretations on my work and it is a real eye opener.

The best way is the simple way - You either like a painting or song or whatever or do not even though you can not always say why.

Art like music is subtle in that it can change meanings according to one's own personal experience

The background is Punch and Judy
en.wikipedia.org...

Edit to add - Though on closer inspection I am unsure need to blow it up

Yes could be snow white and 3 of 7 dwarfs
Note the finger as well as pointing heavenwards is also over the Snow White character
Snow White being known for her purity/innocence
Is the Devil type character reading the book to her pointing this out.
Guess only the artist would know

Now if there was a judge wearing an asses head that would make easy sense
"The law is an ass" is a common and old saying

OK - I am rambling

I think the Devil was giving the bull horns sign with his hands. It does appear that his finger is pointing at the woman in the portrait but i'm still going with bull horns.

This reminds me of that Daniel Webster lawyer story, when he's protecting a man from having his soul collected as the result of an ill-advised bargain with the devil, and his adversaries are the spirits of several men who committed numerous atrocities in their lifetimes (and enjoyed it).

If you want to know what happened, read the story, or watch the movie. It's quite entertaining.
