The Tonight Show cuts staff; Leno trims pay
(Visit link for full article)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — "The Tonight Show" has laid off about two dozen workers, prompting host Jay Leno to accept a pay cut to spare other staffers as NBC clamps down on expenses.

...

Leno had been making between $25 million to $30 million annually as the host of "The Tonight Show." His salary will be reduced to about $20 million after making the job-saving concessions. Leno also brings in substantial income touring as a stand-up comedian.

"Jay's foremost concern is for the wonderful people who work with him at 'The Tonight Show,'" said Bruce Bobbins, a spokesman for Leno. "He did what was necessary to ensure their well-being."

This (to me) is a shining example of looking out for the little guy. A $5 million dollar reduction in salary (voluntarily no less) to prevent more staff from being reduced due to corporate derived budget cuts says a lot about Jay Leno's character imo.

In the days of corporate greed and the almighty dollar, stories like this are few and far between (at least reported anyway) so it does seemingly leave a small sliver of hope that there is indeed still a few genuine and caring folks in the world that aren't fully engrossed in their own greed.

Of course he does still pull in $25 million annually even after the cut (not counting income outside of "The Tonight Show"). I for one have a very difficult time understanding why celebrities earn the amount of income they do, when say...people who risk their lives in various public service occupations make chump change in comparison.

Despite what his true intent may or may not have been by taking this salary reduction, all in all Mr. Leno should be commended (imo) because he (for one and on the surface) was actually thinking about others way of life and not just his own. Most people would only take a pay cut because they are forced to, usually in order to maintain their current position. However, not very often does one hear of this occurring for the sake of someone else's benefit.

I like Leno and the Show but man 25 big ones a year.

I remember when Johnny Carson went through his last divorce. She walked away with HALF his money ---> 400 Million. I think some TV personalities get paid too much.

But I wouldn't mind earning that kind of cabbage

400 Million...................

That's a lot of fun, me thinks.

You could make SO many people happy, with that kind of loot.

Dont worry Slayer. One day you will be pushing it with a wheelbarrow.......

I always wondered why these midnight shows seemed so popular. I neve knew anyone who actually watches any of them.

Who is sitting in front of a TV at midnight, one or two in the morning besides insomniacs and drunks waiting to pass out?

Nor would I. I am coming to terms that I am never going to accomplish any sort of celebrity status at this stage in the game (no matter how many times I refer to myself as a RockStar!
)

However, I am still holding out hope of winning that damn Parrrr Ball one day though.

I sure hope he can still feed his children after he took a 5 million a year pay cut.

While I like Jay Leno why didn't he cut his pay in half to keep the 2 dozen staffers that were already laid off? Fifteen million dollars a year would still be quite substantial!!

Props to Mr. Leno for doing the right thing and putting his staff people ahead of himself.

The CEO of Japan Airlines cut his own salary to cut company costs and keep people employed. Since 2007, he earns less than a pilot of his own airline. He takes the bus to work and eats in the company cafeteria with the other employees. His desk is in an open office space with everyone else. He earns about $100,000 per year.

I would love to see these guys go on a lecture tour of American corporations. I think some of our politicians could take a cue from them, too.
