The Maya elite and rulers, that structure is gone but the 5 tribes that represent the people generaly called Maya are still alive and well down there.

There are no real mayans left.
There may be descendants of the raped womenfolk, but watered outbreeding has removed any REAL mayans.

I actually took a Mayan class when I was in college. The prevalent theory is that the Mayans depleted their natural resources and left, absorbing into other cultures. As for the alien landing, that fringe interpretation came out of researchers discovering a partial inscription on one of the tablets that translated to something about a god returning. However, researchers said it is more like a historical description rather than a prophecy.

They serve no other purpose as far as I can see, which I admit isnt far at all in this case. Seems nobody is around to say just what the purpose of the flats are really for.
