They like to reside under the stove eh? Funny because our cats are obsessed with the stove, and it is one of the places that they show aggressive behavior, hissing/growling etc., on a routine basis. Another thing is, it's an electric stove and despite frequent visits from maintenance, only one or two burners heat up. It's baffling to the maintenance guys because all of the connections are intact and the wiring is perfectly ok...they are most likely going to replace it because there is apparently nothing wrong with it, yet it does not work. I rarely cook anymore because of it. Curiouser and curiouser....

Many of you have suggested varmints such as rats or possums, and we have considered that possibility as well. But there are no signs of rodents...no scat, no urine, no chewed sheetrock or holes, no indication that any creepy crawlies live in the walls here. Also we have cats, very large cats, and I think we would know if they were tracking an animal of any kind. Once there was a large possum on our back porch and believe me, we knew he was out there within about 5 seconds...all of our little predators were charging the sliding glass door trying to get at him. We continue to be wary of the possibility of infestation but so far, there are just no signs that this is happening here.

I know this is a bit off topic but what on earth CAUSES that? I am curious

When we are sleeping, we are not actually unconscious. Our bodies are operating at a cellular level to repair the daily damage we and our environment do to them, and filtering emotional "toxins" through dreams. Certain medications interfere with that process and our brain responds by bypassing the conscious thought level and essentially goes on autopilot, resulting in bizarre nocturnal behavior such as "sleep eating" and even more dangerous things like "sleep driving" or "sleep shopping" (and I am not kidding). It's as if the unconscious mind goes from just dreaming about things to actually doing them, and our physical body becomes the puppet for that purpose. In most cases (just like dreaming) we cannot remember any of it. Things we would not normally conceive of doing, like cooking and eating an entire meal all by ourself, for instance. The conscious part of the brain remains sedated by the drug and is unaware anything is amiss. It's like the person is living vicariously through his or herself.

It isn't actually off-topic because it would be a viable explanation for a lot of the things that have been recounted here...but unless all of the posters are taking a sedative medication every time their possessions are disappearing (at all times of the day and often within a very short timeframe), it doesn't seem very likely as applied to these particular phenomena. Hope that answered your question without getting in dutch with the mods.

If you do decide to have another one installed, is it feasible at all to rig up a camera out there? Numerous people have suggested this to me, and as soon as I finish school (4 weeks left) and receive my student loan disbursement, I am going to Radio Shack or something and see about getting a couple of cameras. How cool would it be to catch some type of "time slip" or merging of dimensions or whatever this is on film?

I have no problem embracing the idea of alternate realities or paranormal events. The problem I have is not knowing. If there are other people (entities?) manipulating our reality, I want to know.

A little update:

Food and objects continue to disappear or relocate as I have been describing. I have lamented repeatedly that none of the items that disappear have been returned.

Yesterday my husband was looking for some papers that he needed for the bank, and nothing supernatural about that...he just forgot where he put them. I have been missing a favorite hair comb now for about 4 months; it disappeared from the dining table one day when I left the room for less than five minutes and despite searching everywhere for it...and I mean everywhere...it has never reappeared. Until yesterday.

He opened up the "junk drawer" in the kitchen, where we stow random odds and ends, put his hand in and came out with my comb...it was sitting right on top. I must have looked like a cartoon with my eyes bugged out and my jaw hanging open in total shock. I personally pulled out that entire drawer and upended it looking for not just my comb, but many other items that went missing and there was absolutely NO comb in there. And I did this more than once after the thing disappeared, with him helping me. In fact, I just opened that drawer a couple of days ago to get some thread and no comb was in it then either.

I am very happy to have it back but I still want to know where it was for the past several months. This is driving me crazy! Anyway, thought I would share that interesting tidbit with you all.

Actually one of my neighbors used to be a handyman and he installed it and I paid him to do so. When I see him I'll ask if he remembers installing it. Either he won't remember or he will and will be surprised like me to see the handle is gone.

I've also experienced some slightly unusual electrical and weather activity. I can't prove anything with that. I'm talking about proof to myself. I believe all of this is impossible to prove to someone else because pictures can be faked. If you did take a picture and your reality shifted on you, the picture you took in the camera might have changed as well or simply not been taken as you remembered. It would be like a science fiction episode of a popular tv show where someone was caught in a timeloop that no one else remembered except him because he was in the right spot at the right time or was touching something so that his memory was unaffected. He tried to record the translations of an artifact but as soon as he looped again, the recorder was blank.

If you did take a picture of something and the camera showed the change, that would be interesting. I'm not sure what is going on. Perhaps someone somewhere is doing some high level experiments and we are all caught in the waves of change as they experiment.

This was an excellent explanation of the dangers of zolpidem (and other similar drugs).
I am familiar with it; I don't use it.
In fact, I don't use anything of the sort - and I am an extremely analytical person - and yet I've had many weird things of this kind happen to me. So many people, from all walks of life, have experienced such things that it would be preposterous to attribute every such occurrence to either a hazy mind or ignorance or both.
(I am pointing this out for the benefit of all those out there who may be reading this.
)

My cousin whose cigarettes went missing did take two antihistamine pills that night. But she takes those every single night, and her mind was not impaired at all. If it had been, it would have shown in the quality of the work she produced (intellectual work, not mechanical). But it didn't.

Are you sure he didn't bypass the old system and install the valve in a different location? You remember the old location and not the new possibly? It is important to keep things where they were when you get older. Moving them makes it harder to find them. Especially if something has been in the same spot for years.

The handle was installed and I used it for a year or two. There is no doubt in my mind. I did not use the handle this year. It is down a small hole with a cover on it right near my front door. I decided to check my front lawn irrigation system before the summer is over to make sure everything was running ok. That's when I was surprised to see no handle. The location where the handle was attached is a fixed location with a hole in the ground and plactic pvc protecting it with a cover.

Well, I've thought about that reality jumping already but I decided it wasn't happening after researching my memories and comparing them to reality and investigating the discrepancies. I think something is blinding us though and I'm not exactly sure what it is. It could be our own subconscious or memory problems. It could be spirits or energy beings that can go back and forth through time and change the past. I'm not sure, but I have noticed about a 40 year delay for corrections by the earth to be noticed from changes in the Ecosystem. Forty years seems to be a number that pops up in old writings once in a while also. That could be a coincidence or it could be something they noticed back then also.

From what I can tell it is almost impossible for a person to understand what is going on for sure. Something is happening regularly that science has no interest in explaining or maybe they know they cannot explain it.

This reminds of reading stories about people doing really weird stuff in their sleep but your story really has a strange edge to it. Things that disappear within minutes makes me wonder if you have something much more complex or dangerous involved.

Might seem crazy but maybe if you put a mixture of frankincense, myrrh, & olive oil over all of the doorways, you might eliminate the possibility of a "visitor" if it's of the malevolent type. This may also have a possibility of bringing about other types of activity, which might give people here a better idea about what you're dealing with.

I'm going to call the mystery about the disappearing handle solved and not paranormal. It came to me last night while I was sleeping. My memory of when the handle was installed was flawed. It was likely installed 4 to 5 years ago. It has rained a lot and the new handle must have corroded and rusted and last year it must have broken off. I probably threw it away and forgot about it. One year later I noticed it and wondered where my handle to turn my front lawn sprinkler system on and off went to. I'm going with this explanation that came to me in a dream. A lot of times I get information in my dreams. Whether that is my subconscious telling me information or I'm getting information elsewhere is a good question but likely another thread topic.

Note: I looked for the handle again a few minutes ago. There is several inches of water in that hole after all the rain last night. A steel handle would rust away rather fast if it was sitting in water a lot. It makes sense to me now. Sorry for the digression. I'm not aware of anything else at my house disappearing.

I suppose if I dug the hole several inches deeper, the water that collects in the hole might sit below the level of the handle and my handle would last several years longer.

That is weird. I would definitely put up some cameras. I too had something disappear a few months ago but in a strange way and I'm glad it was gone. Anyway I had just awoke in the morning. The sun was already up and the bedroom was bright. I looked at my stomach and there was a wolf spider staring at me. It most have noticed my eyes open because it took off across my stomach. I immediately smashed it on my stomach. When I lifted my hand I was shocked that it was not there. I immediately looked everywhere. This was a span of like 2 seconds. So I searched everywhere and it was nowhere to be found. It was impossible that it had gotten away. I didn't think much of it for the rest of the day until I noticed a cold spot on my stomach. Exactly where I was positive that I had killed this spider on my stomach there was a cold spot the size of a quarter. This cold spot lasted for about 3 weeks. Weird.

What's up with everyone seeing spiders when the wake up?! I've had two people talking about this on my thread, (one has posted here), and saw another thread about someone having spiderwebs across his face when he wakes up, then they disappear. I hope I don't wake up seeing spiders! That is almost as bad as the paranormal experiences I've had!

I get the mail every single day and there have been times where I'll find some mail in my name laying on the kitchen counter. To me that is odd because I go through every piece of mail especially since i'm always receiving important paper work and what not. Often times it is my keys "misplaced" and the kicker is, SOCKS, I'm always missing socks! On the serious. I have to buy a pack almost every few months because my socks end up missing. My boxers end up missing too, but not as frequently.

Subsequently, and I posted this in another thread, a woman drove by my house the other day and tells me she had lived there before. Well, I've had a few supernatural things happen like lights flicker on and off, guitar strings strumming and a door knob turning on a closed door and opening but to make a long story short, the house I live in, a man had once died in it... soo... I totally believe in the paranormal fudging with us in some circumstances.

Had my experience with food related stuffs this week just past...I know I got the family size banquet meal meatblls with the sauce because I really really wanted pasta with meatballs and sauce thanks to Olive Garden and their stupid never ending pasta bowl commercials. I made sure i had the meatballs and sauce FOUR FRIKKING TIMES! But when I got back to the hotel I had the frikking turkey dinner crap that I absolutely HATE! I know I checked four times before leaving the store and there's NO WAY I would make that mistake looking at it! Very pissed about this one :/ I mean I had bought the pasta and I absolutely despise that fake turkey banquet puke... it's the only one that really is bad from them. It's really really bad tastes like cardboard :X

Crazy thing happened today, I've been looking for a half a pack of cigarettes for almost 2 weeks. Today they show up on the kitchen counter. Things like this happen a lot at my house. Sometimes when it happens I think i'm losing my mind.

I am so glad it's not just me. I have never had food disappear but objects have come up missing then reappeared in really odd places more then once. The other day I tore apart the house looking for a set of keys. Finally gave up and used my backup set and did the running I needed to do. Came home and did dishes scrubbed the counters things like that. When I was done there was nothing at all on the kitchen counter. Went out later to get a drink and the missing keys were in the middle of the nice clean counter. I have also found my cell phone in the fruit crisper and my remote in the freezer a few times as well. I know I have my blond moments, but I find it hard to believe I'm that air headed.

The house I live in now is old and has had a few deaths, one violent, in its history. Almost every house save the house I grew up in was no less then 75 years old and all seemed to have iffy histories. One I rented that has some crazy stories burned down a couple years ago. The house I grew up in wasn't old, but was built over remains of a previous house that had burned down. Several people died in that fire.

The food missing would bug me to no end, and not finding most of those things that disappear would flat out p me off. This might sound crazy but I've done it a few times and its worked, yell out and say hey, I need those keys or that comb, please give it back. I've found the missing things sometimes within hours of doing that, usually in totally random places. Worth a shot anyway.

Now, anyone have any experience with cabinets opening on they're own. I even installed child locks and they still magically open all the way up. Wouldn't bother me except I have a cat that thinks laying on the plates is the best thing ever...

I have seen quite a few members of ATS talking about this lately. Is it just me, or does this seem to be on the rise? It has happened to me a few times too, with things like television remotes and lighters. They will disappear for a few minutes, then end up right where I had originally left them while I'm looking around the room.

Oddly enough, I was just on the paranormal board of 4chan and noticed that somebody made an interesting thread about this. Screenshot of the thread here (Not safe for work - contains some bad language.)

I'm not sure how on the rise it is. Until I was maybe 12 I thought that was completely normal. A friend of mine was in the bathroom and saw someone behind her in the mirror for a split second. Little miss Christians don't believe in ghosts changed her tune real fast lol. That house was basically the house all ghost movies were based on. Whole family died in a fire then the foundation fixed and a house rebuilt on it. I had an awesome collection of arrowheads, used to pick them up every year when we tilled up our garden. One of my neighbors had a display case in his living room of artifacts he had found on his property and back in the woods. The current owner almost lost his arm due to a beam in the garage just falling while he was remodeling. He hadn't touched the beam and there was nothing wrong with it. Either people are just paying more attention to it or are less afraid of ridicule and more willing to share stories.
