Why is the US supporting terrorists in Syria?

Let's look at the definition of terrorism: The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.
The Syrian 'free' army has massacred soldiers, killed civilians and blamed on the army and have committed many atrocities.

The Syrian rebels are very much like the Taliban;
The Taliban are trying to take control of the Afghan government.
The rebels are, you guessed it trying to take over the Syrian government.

So, why does the US support them? Because it's the last Arab country left that is not a US stronghold.

US doesn't care about human rights, (There is a genocide going on in Burma right now, not a word from US) it's only looking for its own benefit; to choke Iran. Syria is the only 'friend' Iran has, taking them out them will open the doors for the final attack on Iran.

Why is the US supporting terrorists in Syria?

Because terrorists like to stick with their own kind.

And the US goverrnment is the biggest terrorist organization on earth.

So that is why the US is supporting terrorists in Syria, just like they did in Libya.

They are now showing cute clips of the FSR been the patriots of government change. Have people suddenly forgot this is Libya take 2.

The beeb show footage every night (unconfirmed of course) of the peril that is happening in Syria right now. They have even started using the chemical warfare card.

I would refer you to this thread:

Western forces in general, and the US in specific have been the number one purveyor of state-sponsored terror for over a hundred years.

Until recently, they were content to terrorize foreign nations and more-or-less left the homeland alone. Even so, "leaving the homeland alone" consisted of attacking the homeland in slow motion with prohibitions, oppressive "laws" and covert operations. All that is radically changing. TPTB have crossed the Rubicon and are poised to put troops on our streets.

We are going to live thru what our "government" inflicted on others for a century.

"""The USA is the foremost enemy of Islam. It is a terrorist state by nature that has set fire to everything everywhere and its ally, the international Zionism does not stop short of any crime to achieve its base and greedy desires, crimes that the tongue and pen are ashamed to utter or write. The stupid idea of a Greater Israel ...(36) urges them to commit any shameful crime."""

From a geo-political perspective maybe the US wants to see a caliphate returned. The US have been very much in favour of the 'Turkish' democratic model.

A caliphate would have the potential to counter China's increasing sphere of influence.

Let's look at the definition of terrorism: The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.

People on ATS need to get this very basic fact into their heads, there is no universally accepted definition of terrorism. With this very simple fact, you thread turns into rubbish because actual definitions of terrorism are far more complex than you will find form an online dictionary or Wikipedia. If you actually think about it if you use the definition you provided for terrorism it would also apply to the Syrian army who are also using violence for political means and as such are terrorists. The whole problem I have with your thread revolves around this definition of terrorism.

You are also incorrect in saying that the FSA is like the Taliban, the two groups are totally different but that is an argument for another time, to push the point would only derail your thread.

As to the question of why, I can think of a few reasons that America would support the FSA. Like it or not the Assad regime is killing civilians and committing human rights violations. Further to this Syria is a strong ally of Iran and that probably plays into it then there is also the financial motivations and American security interests.

One could look into each of these points in detail but they all focus on the idea of America and the west supporting the FSA and not terrorists as your thread is suggesting.

On the issue of the definition of terrorism and particularly how it applies to situations where by a rebel group is being supported by an external state I have this thread that I wrote to help members who insist on providing a “definition of terrorism” in their threads. I hope you find it useful.
