Facebook says it thinks 83 million profiles are "fake."
(digitaltrends.com)

Facebook says it thinks 83 million profiles are "fake." Is that a credit to Facebook's policing, or an erosion of Facebook's credibility?

In company filings this week, social networking giant Facebook provided a customary laundry list of risk factors that could impact the company’s business going forward. A few of those risks have raised eyebrows in the technology, advertising, and investment communities, particularly Facebook’s own assessment that some 8.7 percent of profiles on the service are “fake.”

Good, I hope they choke on their invasive social-spy network. Let's see how the NSA likes wasting it's time building up dossiers on phony profiles.

good.

I am forced to use facebook because there are events that I have no control over that converse there and such. If they want to use my personal information to make money and advertise to me they can go screw themselves.
Like.

Probably the same way anyone who uses it does..they're easy to spot. Unfortunately,I'm stuck using it because my family is up north while I'm in the south. But I have very little info or pics on there. As for the op,I saw this on my local news earlier.I don't even know why it's news.I mean really, who cares? I thought it was common sense that there was fake profiles on there.

I could have two different Facebook accounts, one using my first name and one using my middle name, so both would be legit. I'm not lying about who I am because I've been referred to by both names in my life. Not trying to be sneaky or anything, that's just my preference. Facebook though obviously doesn't see it this way.

Their assumption that just because one person uses two names makes one account fake is rather ludicrous. Maybe I want two accounts because I want one to be personal and the other to be business. The business account of course is going to be there so I can get a higher social media score, make the professional contacts I need and keep my marketing edge thus making me worth more to potential employers.

I really hope Facebook knows that people do this, otherwise they're going to get what they deserve. A misunderstanding of the very product they created to the point where it's going to be out of their control.

That whole report makes them look way out of the loop.

its not that its "fake people" but there are facebook pages dedicated to any and everything. From "I love being black" to "mcdonalds" to "partying" to "water" to "fitness models" to different political organizations, to fan pages of different people, to "books". Any and everything that isnt a "person" has a facebook page.

Wrong.

I believe FaceBook is self aware. You read it right people.

I'm telling you man, FaceBook is the physical manifestation of the Hive-Mind. Look at all the information being beamed into its nexus from all facets and all monitors, its like FaceBook is sucking the energy out of all of us and building its own concensus. Look at this 3-dimensional map of the internet,

now here is some images of the structure of the universe,

now look at this comparison of a human brain cell to the structure of the universe,

taking this into account, it all begins to make a creepy sort of sense. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the newest ploy of the global elite to gain the secrets to ultimate knowledge and raw power. There are theories floating about out there that TPTB have ingested '___' and what they saw allowed them to engineer this 'machine' that is the economic system, which they've used to control the fate of man for the past 200 years or so, what if they brought about the internet, and facebook, in an attempt to control reality?

Think about it...

It says "thinks", not "knows". They can guess from names, lack of activity, page content etc.

One of those is mine...
I use it to look at the stuff folks somehow think I can't live without seeing. No way would I have a real one. I wouldn't miss that one if they shut it down either. Just gives me a good reason not to rush over and look at Rosemary's...er, I mean someone's baby.

I think a lot of people and even FB insiders knew it but they overinflated the IPO price so the employees and other owners could cash in and then let the price drop after they made the money. Only the smart people didnt fall for it.

What's the difference between that one and a real one? You don't have to give away any personal information. I don't.

Dear Blackmarketeer,

The question is why did Facebook representatives say that there was a problem with "fake" profiles? The reaction has been given and the solution is that in the future you will be required to use your actual name in order to use Facebook. Oh and not just Facebook, it is coming to sites that people post on more and more you will not be allowed to post anonymously.

Because then my old school chums would want to chat maybe some old boyfriends etc...
I didn't want to talk to most of them then. I really don't want to do it now.
It was just a personal thing. I know I am alone in this as everyone I knows has a facebook.

Not trying to be "nit-picky" but that's a mouse's brain cell.

And, not related to you Davian but just in general: wasn't there an article about govt. agencies creating fake profiles to spy on and instigate real users?

You're referring to 'sock puppets'. I've come across a few of them already, most of them very convincing.

Facebook says it thinks 83 million profiles are "fake."

Considering the numerous phonies I've met in real life, I'm not the least bit surprised.

See ya,

I would guess the way they detect "fake" account is by overplapping IP addresses (with exceptions for public IPs like libraries and cafes), same phone numbers to register multiple accounts, and by profiling the account itself, to see if it seems "real" or "fake". There may be tracking cookies from FB or it's hordes of advertisers, too.

There's companies out there that will sell you hundreds of Twitter followers and FB friends, so obviously if this is happening then there are a huge number of fake accounts. (just Google "Buy Facebook Fans Followers Likes", no shortage in that biz.)

FB stock will continue to go down, people will eventually wake up to the fact it is all hype. When the advertisers bail (some already have) then it's a downward spiral. Can't say I'll miss it.
