Usually stupid people don't bother me, but this time I have to blow of some steam. So here's my rant.
Today at the restaurant I manage I walked from the office out to the floor to see one of my best severs of six years in tears. I asked what was wrong, and found out from the others that the lady requested a different server because the one she had was gay. I talked to the server and found that she had told him that he is going to hell for being gay. Luckily the owner was there. As I approached the owner to tell him that I was going to ask the lady to leave if she did not stop making comments like that to my staff or to anyone in general, she got up to leave. She was by herself and walked passed the owner and me saying "I will never eat here again, I'm going to Chick-Fil-A!!" My reply was "Good, Get Out!" The owner was shocked until he got the full story and went to the parking lot to 86 her for good. But she was already in her car and hopefully never coming back.
I have seen racism but never hate towards homosexuals first hand. I was upset after seeing a good person crying after experiencing pure hate. And I am still bothered like it happened to me personally. I even gave him a one arm hug. Which was not smart because he started crying again, making me feel like crying. He said "If a straight Christian man like you can hug me and accept me, why can't these other people?" And all I can say was "There are idiots in every group of people, that's just life. F 'em." I wonder what would have happened if the current events involving Chk-Fil-A weren't in the news. I bet this lady would have not said a word.
Rant Over. I feel a little better now. Luckily this sever will not quit over this incident. BUT our restaurant is in a very wealthy, far right wing, Mormon part of town. I see this happening again as the whole Chik-Fil-A gets more attention.

So freaking sick of this topic. People on both sides need to get off their high horses and stop getting "offended" at every litte thing.

Do what you want, do who you want, say what you want, and always remeber that sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you.

Wow, what a drama queen!

There's a reason she was eaing alone that night (and probably most nights)

I know we're not robots, but you can't really allow derogatory comments like this to affect you, coz that's exactly what nasty little trolls like her want.

It's certainly your rant here but I do have a question and to me as a customer, it's a BIG one.

How did the customer ever know the server was gay? How I learn that fact about someone can determine greatly how, if at all, it changes the way I act toward them. Personally, I can't recall knowing if a server was gay or straight outside of times I've been in gay bars and well....when in Rome, it's not assuming anymore. (I've met friends there who preferred the fact California gay bars were among those willing to flaunt the Ciggy Cops and put Ashtrays out on request for a long time....
)

I'm going to guess by the way you put this that your server didn't do or say anything and the customer was just a hateful troll that guessed on mannerisms or something stereotypical. In which case, its a shame your owner missed making it official in the parking lot.
I'm just curious on that point.. Thanks!

How did the customer know this man was gay? Did she ask? Or is there something about him that made her think he was gay? Not that it matters. She was wrong. Period. I'm just curious.

This is exactly what I thought. She may have talked smack behind his back, or thought whatever, but she never would have said something. This stupid feud has done more for the anti-gay cause than all that money they've been throwing at it.

hoping at some point after our current few generations die, there will be equality to all people and a level understanding of life and love.

it's stuff like this is why we can't advance. no ET till we evolve a bit here.

That is terrible. It is always easy to think of things to say to such morons after the fact, but it would have been pretty cool if the server had shot back, "Homosexuality isn't contagious, but apparently stupidity is."

Personally, I usually love gay servers. They tend to be vivacious, friendly, and fun. Too bad your restaurant isn't in West Texas, I'd go there and request that server specifically.

Apparently, this whole Chick-Fil-A thing, instead of being one example of a business owner saying how he feels about gay marriage, has turned loose the idiots who think it is okay to insult people of a different sexual orientation.

As the other poster pointed out, there is a reason this nasty old bat was eating alone.

The topic is annoying... this is the new black...

Seriously .. who cares what someone does behind closed doors??? who cares who they love? .. serving food is simple and it doesn't involve race, gender or sexual orientation.. when it does? you need to jump off a bridge.. that is pathetic.

This server' mannerisms and voice definitely give him away. But he is not flaming out of control for attention either. He's just a normal guy that is openly gay.

Would you want someone like that eating in your restaurant? So what is the problem? The person didn't want to be served by someone gay and you don't want to have someone like that around so in this circumstance everyone is happy... Even the "server" wouldn't want to serve someone like that either so they should be happy too right?

Everyone is happy in this scenario as far as I can tell...

Thank you... That was all I was curious about. She was so far out of line, it's a shame she didn't leave with a clear footprint on her tail. Whatever we all think on the issues for the larger picture, heck...no need to be vicious and cruel to each other as people. What a ...yeah, you know the word.

Not sure where you live, but here in New Orleans her eating out options would be quite limited if she doesnt like gay waiters. Her loss. We have the best food on the planet.

ETA: This story sounds a bit manufactured. If it is not, no offense, just sounds pretty made up is all. I say this as a former waiter/bartender and as someone who usually sniffs out made up stories.

what does crying do beside say "hey look at me im a victim",when you label yourself a victim you become weaker in the eyes of others and will then have a harder time moving forward. the lady had hate in her heart and i don't agree with what she said, but you need to tell your worker to man up and not let some ignorant lady make him cry with words, now that this guy sees he gets attention for being verbally attacked by a customer, he may pull that card next time he has an altercation with a customer, and from being in the restaurant business i can tell you customers will be d*ck$ to all workers no matter what race, gender, religion,or sexual orientation, dude had a lame customer. what waiter, or waitress in the history of food service has been treated nicely by every customer of theres. if you can show me such a server i will recant my statment

Very good point. I might share that with him tomorrow. Everyone including the owner could care less if this lady ever comes back. Thanks!

Haha i agree about gay servers. Dealt with a few gay baristas, they always made me smile. I woud probably specifically try to get served by this gay waiter, unless there was a cute flirty girl waitress...

You're welcome.

Who really cares about somebodies sexual orientation anyway? This is a free country. We did away with child sweat shops, women earned their right to vote, segregation. Maybe the person who walked out went to chik-fil-a instead? My wife and I really do not like the way chik-fil-a is all screwed up but damn their nuggets are so so good.

Your statements are also correct. Maybe because this was my first time seeing this type of hate close up, it bothered me more than it should. I put it in the rant forum to get it of my chest and have a little discussion.
