There is nothing that can be done about this as everyone owns a knife.... they are an everyday tool unlike guns.... you dont need a gun for everyday use.... you dont use one for eating, carving, cutting etc....

You cant compare a guns usage to that of a knife.

Having said this, you will get people all over the world who lose it one day and go out and kill whether with a gun or a knife....

Also watching and playing violent games can have an effect on peoples minds.... if they aren't that much in control of their thoughts.... even Films & TV can have the same effect.... I used to watch CSI NY and CSI and even though they started off pretty horrific, they seem to have got moreso... lots of blood, beatings, killings, ... you can also blame movies such as 'SAW' and the like..... some of them are just too chilling to watch and honestly IMO i'd ban such Films!!

Some of us do actually need a gun for everyday use. Just because you do not, doesn't mean plenty of us don't

How is it that this issue is still being debated in America? We all know where everyone stands...

Gun enthusiasts will always argue -
1. That it's our right to have as many guns as we want, check The Constitution.
2. Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
3. Criminals will always get guns regardless of the law, making guns illegal will only hurt the law abiding citizens.
4. Factions within the government could become evil & abuse their power or we might be invaded - and we citizens need guns to defend ourselves in those cases.
5. It's a slippery slope, first they take our guns then they take our *fill in the blank*

Gun opposers will always argue -
1. The Constitution authors never envisioned assault weapons.
2. Guns make killing people too easy.
3. If the gun laws were more strict criminals would have a harder time getting guns and deaths caused by guns would plummet ... just look at England as proof.
4. There are too many children with access to household guns.
5. You can't compare anything other method of killing/death to guns because assault weapons are made only for killing.

I get so sick of the back and fourth...and it'll never go away...

How about this instead. While your opinion is duly noted, if you dont live in this country-MIND YOUR OWN DANG BUSINESS. You dont vote here so your opinion means exactly jack squat when it comes to the rights of the people in this country. Thank you. That is all.

Your opinion is well known here. And you are entitled to believe what you wish. But keep in mind, most times when a legal gun is used to protect someone it is never in the news and statistics. Unless the police get involved which many times doesn't happen no report is even generated. I was once confronted by 5 young men with baseball bats and axe handles. They were currently feuding with other youths about something or other and they did not know who I was. The confrontation occurred because one of their car alarms went off. I was returning to my apartment after taking a stroll to pick up my mail. They came running downstairs ready for a fight. As they came out the door I was the only person there. However I was carrying a .45 concealed as I was on my way home from some shooting practice. These five guys lined up right in front of me about 10 feet away. They were confused as to what to do, because I was not afraid or the least bit intimidated. No words were spoken, just eye contact, with each and every one of them. No gun was shown in any way. And they backed down going back inside...
So this is not in the statistics because no cops were necessary. Everybody went home and nobody got hurt...

Sarcasm does not transfer well over to text. What ever happened to the days when people said what they meant and meant what they said? Has such a time ever existed?

Not since caveman pictures.

Even then there are pics of UFO's and aliens on them. They must have been joking around too.

The problem with knife attacks are they are "Silent".

Not a single person can hear them, nor if concealed properly in a very large crowd, no one would know who was doing the stabbing or slashing.

The term "Silent, but deadly" comes to mind with knifes.

OP Starred and flagged for you spot on sarcasm.

Compromise does seem lost on countless numbers, leaders especially.

Too many see black or white. All or nothing, as you stated. After all, you're either with us, or you're with the terrorists.

You're damn right, it's black and white. There is NO compromise on FREEDOM. Get it? Funny, you seem to feel the same way about your cell phone, and you seem to "get it" that it's stupid people when dealing with cell phones, but seem to be incapable of applying that logic equally across the board with another inanimate object.

Your Quote

Jesus, somebody save us from the idiots on the road! They need to ban cell phones and driving like they did with drunk driving, cuz no one drives drunk anymore!

Give me a break. I play music on my phone through the radio while I drive. I expect I'll be getting stopped more should it pass. Ah well, more chances to laugh in a pigs face and tell em to go bother some real criminals.

Idiots will be idiots. Those with the gall to think they're gonna cheat death aren't gonna care about a damned law, federal, state, or county. Law provides consequence, not so much in the prevention department. Jeez, some people's kids...

Sorry but all I got from your post was a over winded half arsed attempt at defending a clearly ignorant opinion. You seem to live a life of expectant violence. It must be hard living with such destain for people and the need to own superior fire power. Very sad.. I honestly hope you get better.

Ah, can't debate the points so go for the personal attack. I don't live in fear because of rational choices. Others, however seem to have an irrational fear of inanimate objects. It is sad when people fear objects.

If you see that as a personal attack I guess you can see some truth in my post. I'm sorry you find the subject so complicated but it's very black and white. I guess you have never been in a fight. People become irrational in stressful situations. Having easy access to a gun gives the irrational person an easy way to kill, without thinking. No guns = less deaths, more guns = more deaths, understand?
I live in the north east of England and we simply do not have gun crime. It's very rare. Why? because there are no guns, understand? but as expected your reply will get stars from the ignorant American Rambos.
When intelligence fails and communication breaks down lets just shoot everyone.Yeeehaaaa!!

If you have not guess by now, I’m clearly being sarcastic of this issue. I bring up this article to show all those people that want to ban guns that guns are not the problem, crazy people are the problem. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people!

And if you don't allow citizens to have guns, those crazy people won't have access to them. Sure people may be better protected in very rare situations, but it's statistically obvious that guns increase homicide, those deaths outweigh the lives saved by a citizen owning a gun.

Not much point in me posting this, since most of ATS seem to ignore the numbers and insist everyone should have a gun, so I'm not expecting anyone to agree with me here. More people having guns means more potentially crazy people having guns.
edit on 2-8-2012 by SpearMint because: (no reason given)

If you can provide one example of a homicidal nutjob who is ONLY concerned with employing weapons he can obtain legally, you will have the ear of most ATS members.

So please, be our guest.

First off, What the heck is his problem!? You barge in and kill 9 people and wound 5?

First of all, you have have the knife. Second of all, your responsible for the use of of said knife and lastly, anything you do that is considered life-threatening to other people, the person will be held responsible and not the knife.

Please point me to the statistics because gun crime is unheard of where I live.

I guess we need to let the Liberal Left leave America and go setup a Country of their own. That way,
when they get invaded and or attacked by people with guns, knives, swords, bowling balls, spatulas,
sticks and stones, they won't be able to defend themselves and be crying in the streets and then they
might just wonder why it happened to them. Its because they don't live in the REAL WORLD where it
is imperative that one be able and capable of defending themselves, their property and their family.

That's ignorant. A knife only has one purpose, to cut. A gun only has one purpose, to fire bullets. Both have many applications however.

What application does a gun have other than to maim or kill? It was invented for that purpose and that purpose only.

A knife is a constructive tool that can be used for a weapon. You could also bash someone's head in with a hardback Bible, maybe it's time to burn them all, eh?

Absolutely no truth in the post, but the implication was obvious. I've been in several fights, some including firearms in two wars. People focus in a fight as well and can think much more clearly than you presume. Where you fail is in projecting your own insecurities upon others.

Your equation is illogical and you seemed to miss the principle of correlation versus causation. There are several gun ranges in the NE of England so you obviously have guns that are not being used to kill anyone. Hmm perhaps it is the people in your area that are different? You have a lower murder rate than London, so it must be guns causing the murder, not the people.

Intelligence does not fail with me. Just logical principles of cause and effect rather than irrational fear of an inanimate object.

Irrational fear of an inanimate object? That is one of the silliest things I have ever read. If you truly believe that the millions of gun owners in America possess the control you speak of to use their weapons responsibly you are delusional. I can appreciate certain people owning guns but the fact they are so accessible is always going to lead to trouble.

What application does a gun have other than to maim or kill?

Firearms are used for construction.

Wikipedia: Powder Actuated Tools

They are simple captive bolt pistols that fire hardened nails into concrete. They use rimfire ammunition that contains smokeless powder.
ETA: The US Navy has used firearms for years to launch lines from ship to ship. Other branches of the armed services use them to launch illumination flares and marker signals, to help in the rescue of stranded people, not necessarily military personnel.
