Arnold Toynbee; Study of History
Entitled to be called "alternative" because professional historians ignore it.
(I read the copy in the college library and had to cut most of the pages myself)

The Trickster and the Paranormal by George P. Hansen

"George Hansen’s The Trickster and the Paranormal (Xlibris 2001) is a mammoth examination of the boundaries between the natural and the supernatural . . . an important and thought-provoking approach to the study of the paranormal.  In addition to his examination of ufological events, he applies his theory of the trickster archetype to psychics, debunking organizations like CSICOP, and government disinformation programs."

"after seven years of writing and research, Hansen has unleashed his ambitious and scholarly tome examining the current state of ufological, paranormal, and psychic research...Hansen's most significant contribution, however, is his thorough and comprehensive examination of the vast array of forces which have aligned themselves to keep ufology marginal.  It is arguably the best analysis of its kind ever written."

Passport to Magonia by Jacques Vallee

Jacques Vallee's "Passport to Magonia" is a landmark study of the close encounter experience by one of the most astute thinkers in the field. Vallee compares modern UFO sightings to their mythological counterparts, raising profound questions about the nature of our apparent "visitors" and their role in our psychosocial evolution. Like Jung, Vallee assesses the psychical and psychological impacts of the UFO experience. For more rare insight from Vallee, read "Dimensions," Confrontations" and "Revelations."

You must be looking at a condensed edition.
There are twelve volumes in the full set (I own nine of them).
He gets away from nation-based history and analyses how the different civilisations that have been in the world have been growing and falling apart.
All very relevant to understanding what is happening to western civilisation.
