Ukraine part of Russia' gaffe angers Kiev

sports.ndtv.com

Russia's men's indoor volleyball captain Taras Khtey, according to london2012.com, was born in "Lvov Region (RUS)" in 1982, a major error given that Lviv (Lvov in Russian) is the main city in proudly nationalist western Ukraine.

The website correctly states Russian rhythmic gymnast Karolina Sevasyanova was born in Ukraine in 1995 but gives the region of her birth as "Ukraine region", a red rag to Ukrainians who fume at insinuations their nation is a "region" of Russia.

David Ayrapetyan was born in “Baku (RUS)” (the capital of Azerbaijan), Alexandr Ivanov hailed from “Rustavi (RUS)” (actually in Georgia), while Tatiana Kosheleva came from “Belorussia Region (RUS).”

This is not surprising, given that the website says Besik Kudukhov's birthplace was in South Ossetia (RUS

I am Ukrainian, born and raised.. from Lviv too actually. West Ukraine is very nationalistic, and even though I do not get involved in the politics of my home country as it is all corrupt (lmore obviously than here in the states), it is upsetting how much control and disdain Russia has over Ukraine. They honestly should deport everyone who opposes the fact that Ukrainian should be the primary language in all schools and across all public television, which is most of the population of east Ukraine.

By the way, it is not Kiev.. it is a russian way of saying it. It's Kyiv.

As someone who is from Ukrain, you honestly consider it less corrupt than the US? Try doing business there as a foreign company... You have to bribe EVERYONE. Yeah, the US is totally worse than that. Better yet, take a look at the corruption index... Ukrain scores a 2.3 vs a 7.1 for the US, 10 being clean, 1 being the worst.

Ukrain was part of Poland too. Should it be called a Polish territory?

It is just nationalism on its best...

Remember here having students tell me they are from Serbia, and after you ask them what city, they tell you city in Bosnia. This is all product of nationalist agenda and in many cases result of poor education.

I know it is corrupt, I never said it wasn't. I clearly said that it is corrupt which is why I do not get involved in politics. The less/more obvious part was a typo. I'm not sure what you gain by attacking my post or Ukraine, as it's corruption is not the subject of this thread, but you come across as a snob. I am not sure what determines "corruption scale" but I know that in America corruption is legalized through the means of lobbyists representing huge corporations controlling the governing body of the nation. It's legalized bribery. If you consider this, and the resources and power that America has in the world, then you will clearly see how much more corrupt than anything else in this world America is.

Not really, What if in the states New York was constantly called as Nuevo Yorke (or some other BS) in news papers and television.. it would be an outrage. It's easy for you to sit there, completely dettached from the mindset of the local populace, and make your remarks.

No, it is not the same, as this is what some kids learned - not their mistake. If someone calls state of New York other name is one thing, but if that new name has agenda behind it (in this case all EX USSR republics being called Russia) that is different story.

Part that you are missing is strong national sentiment among Russians that ended up in Ukraine after split.

Right, I am a snob who watched deals fall through at the last minute in Ukrain after we bribed half the country. I fail to see how you equate lobbying with corruption. At least running a business in the US can be done without every local official needing to be bought off, along with hiring his brother as a consultant, etc etc. I understand how you look back home with rose colored glasses, but you are going too far. If the US is so corrupt, go back to your home country, since you honestly view it as LESS corrupt than the US.

Ukraine has never been a part of Russia for a very simple reason:
State the name of Russia has never existed

Personal attack, reported

I don't see how anyone in their mind can see former big Phrama, big Oil, big Bank, and big Agro execs being appointed in high places in our government and not cry foul. These same corporate soulless shills go on to become politicians and pass laws left and right that increase the profits of the powers that brought them up to and kept them in power. And then you have lobbyists handsomely rewarding other politicians to vote a certain way and to pass certain laws that are not in the best interest of the public, but only serve to protect the corporations.

Additionally, please not tell me where to live. It is extremely ignorant, and will get you clocked in more ways than you can count by individuals whom you say this to in real life. Not a threat, just an advice. Why don't you go back in time and say this to MLK, Ghandi, and other martyrs who openly criticized the land they lived in and tried to change it. Do you see how incredibly ignorant your comment is?

Also, I am not looking at Ukraine with "rose-colored" glasses. Can you not read? I am fully aware of how corrupt it is.

I did not say that, just that it is possible with nationalist agendas and poor education to have people who don't even know where are they from.

And also aggrevate the North Koreans with the whole flag mix up.. you'd think they would hire competent people to organize world's largest sporting event.
