High winds, Twister in NY

Initial reports indicate a tornado touched down in Elmira, the Storm Prediction Center stated. Other towns across eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and upstate New York also reported downed trees.

i am not a weather expert by any means BUt how rare is a tornado in NY?

I doubt its uncommon..the derecho was predicted anyway. The weird part is the two derechos in two months...

It's not unheard of but it's definitely not a common occurrence here. Saw some crazy looking clouds going out to the ocean before followed by one heck of a thunder storm

I've lived in upstate NY my entire life. I'm about 1 hour east of Elmira. When I was younger I don't remember ever having tornadoes. But in the last few years they've become more and more common. Certainly nothing like in the midwest, but I wouldn't really say they're rare or anything. Usually the worse weather is just south of us in PA.
