ok, that's such a good idea that I'm gonna give it a star, half a flag, clap with one hand, stand on my had and flap my wings!!!

This is a brilliant idea!!! I'm clapping and laughing but you can't hear it
uh or see it

I don't feel that a persons time here in any way gives them more credibility to applaud and this just rewards people like me who post all the time. Does my opinion matter more than that of a new member with no posts? Does it matter more than an old member who rarely contributes? No. It doesn't. We should all be equal on the boards.

I like the idea and thought up something similar at one point, but it just seems frivolous.

I would like to be able to use my stupid points for something, Beer would be OK.

It will send a refreshing wave through all ATS community
i think the site admin still are trying to find a better system
for the ATS points and the applause system

i believe this would be a very positive new improvement
that will become very popular
we already know the stars and flags systems is very popular
the new applause system would be the cherry on the cake lol
the site would then see an increase of visits and new member

that was my 2 cents
great idea Op

That is an awesome idea as well!! You hit the nail on the head. Some folks here are ridiculously funny and hitting a laugh button would be loads easier than trying to figure out something good to write just so you can let them know you were literally laughing out loud. And while they don't necessarily need to know who thought what was funny...sometimes it is just so dang good you can't resist.

To the OP... I love your idea as well. If a member has an allotted amount I feel like they would use it pretty wisely. Sometimes I see posts/threads so good that I will actually watch the OP's "applause" amount to see if a mod noticed it as well. It would be a pretty great feature IMO.

Here's your applause big guy.

BTW, it seems great minds think alike.

Proposal for member generated applause

Not that it ever went anywhere.

I'd gladly spend my ATS points to reward a member for a great post. Its not like there's anything else we can do with them.

Great minds indeed FortAnthem.

I did do a search honest on the word 'Applause' honest but after page 3 of nothing I figured I was safe. Maybe though if enough peeps want it it might get implemented. I mean every 3 months someone calls for a 'dislike' button, though I totally agree on the reasons why not to have one. This I think would be something which would add a little happiness to ATS, which is always a good thing.

At least you had a few supportive mods on your thread, I would be very interested in what the staff and admin have to say. You could even set it up in a way where member applause generates no additional points. I just think it would be a really nice way to give a personal thank you to another member for outstanding effort. I think with the additional safeguards both of us proposed it would actually be a really hard system to abuse.

And to tell you the truth, even if some members do abuse it what will it really mean when you look at it from a big picture perspecitve. Until flags, stars, applause and points actually end up converting into real world $$$ in my bank account then what’s the point of abusing them anyway?

Awww, thanks. I'm too lazy to upload a picture but I just traded a ton of points to have a really pretty bar maiden bring you a huge frosty glass of you favorite.

No, please no. For a couple of reasons. One, I've seen some of the most bizarrely stupid threads get more flags than the United Nations. Two, there are people who take fairly extreme positions and have a relatively small number of people who seem to pop up as if on call to flag and star the heck out of things.

We already have two ways for members to show approval, in addition to U2Us. I'd like the Mods to have one reserved to them in the hopes that it will be a balanced and well regarded reward.

If the suggestion is to create a whole new category of "Member Applause," as opposed to regular applause, we will be only creating another popularity award like the star and flag.

Unnecessary, misleading, or both.

I understand what you’re saying , but ‘Member Applause’ wouldn’t be something that would generate any additional traffic to a thread, would be more or less anonymous unless you were to click on their profile, and would generate far less (if any) actual ATS points than a mod applause, and just the fact you only have a limited number to play with would I believe encourage people to actually use them as they’re meant to be used instead of back simply a way to high five their buddies.

In term of abuse there is always that potential but it would be harder and a lot less meaningful than the peeps who S&F any and every comment that their buddies make. Plus the positives in terms of increasing positivity I believe would outweigh any risk of misuse.

Also, as I said to FortAnthem, all these scoring systems are simply meaningless numbers on an anonymous website. Even if they are abused, what difference would it make anyway…

I`m all up for the - member appluading member - thing............. i`ve been in too many threads where ONE post is more important than the other 500 and deserves more than a little star.

Still ......... i think there`s bigger issues at hand at the moment , and if we all sit around talking about the website rather than what`s happening in the shadows .... we`ll take our eye off the ball ........ back to work

nahh, I want a "laugh at your hilariousness" button and a "Im giving you the finger and flouncing off the board now" button ( like a smiley with its panties bunched up) and definitely a "I really hate you but I have to pretend to be the adult here and act like Im above all of this internet fighting so I dont get banned, but I really still hate you but have to appear superior to your childishness, son" smug smiley button. Ive noticed that one word "son" when used condescendingly on here really gets the hackles up on some posters.. whatever hackles are.

member applause would be JUST LIKE the stars and flags : completely skewed and definitely NOT indicative of a well thought out or informative post or thread.. you know, like my posts and threads.

Truly, a sort of laugh or whatever would be most fun IMO!!

Or you can go buy years here before they can applause
can some people join and with in month they have 1K + posts
thinking they have to run their mouth off responding to every post

Says the cat with the silver box around all his posts…

The reason I suggested ‘experienced members’ is simply because they’re the ones who are less likely to abuse it and use it as a ‘buddy backslapping’ exercise.

You’ve also gotta keep in mind that a member who rarely contributes, while they may be sitting on a cache of points for the moment, will not be generating the activity needed to generate more points and therefore the ability to give out any further applause once their cache is depleted.

However I’m all for free beer If the applause thing doesn't happen maybe we could convert our all points into credits for an ATS sponsored pub crawl...

I actually see the opposite happening. Power corrupts. People with the power to applaud and elevate someone's status are going to act the same way most do about stars. Only handing it out when someone agrees. I star people that I disagree with all the time. I just don't think the majority would do anything but elevate people they agreed with. Then again I have no idea how much applause everyone has so I guess it doesn't matter.

will not be generating the activity needed to generate more points

I suppose I just don't think someone's activity matters at all. I'm very active, and I don't for a second believe my opinion matters more than someone who posts less because of said activity.

Free beer is fine and dandy by me though. Slayer's buying.

In the good old days we had WATS. Different than those we have today. If I remember correctly everyone had 3 WATS votes at the beginning of each month. You treasured your WATS votes and only gave them to someone that was very deserving - because you only had 3 to give. At the end of the month the person with the most WATS votes would then get to wear the WATS medal for the coming month...

Example

And if I recall correctly Valhall held the record for most WATS awards ever...

Perhaps something similar could be devised? A limited amount of Votes (or Applauses). This way those "praises" would be handed out with much more consideration and will be valued more, seeing that they can't be handed out left and right like flags and stars. Although with the amount of members we have today compared to "back then" it may not be as easy to implement. Just a thought.

I actually like that idea. Give some well earned props to exceptional posters but within reason. I like that a lot. I think 1 point per person per month would be perfect. If there is a rather exceptional thread or post you can give your monthly point (I think three is too many). Everyone gets a voice and it wouldn't become some weird club if the points given were not permanently displayed.

I want to pet the pug.

Its a good idea, yet if left unchecked i could easily see this as a competition much like the flag feature already appears to be.
