Gay marriage to be introduced in Scotland

www.bbc.co.uk

Scotland could become the first part of the UK to introduce gay marriage after the SNP government announced plans to make the change.

Ministers confirmed they would bring forward a bill on the issue, indicating the earliest ceremonies could take place by the start of 2015.

Political leaders, equality organisations and some faith groups welcomed the move.

But it was strongly opposed by the Catholic Church and Church of Scotland.

Well as a Scot this is good to see. For the last few weeks religious figures have been trying to bully the SNP into halting plans for gay marriage saying that they will lose voters.

It's great to see everyone become more equal. Equality is great thing and not allowing gay marriage was just calling gay people second class citizens really.

Good to see that our government realised we are in the 21st centuary and not biblical times.

+1 for equality!

here is the definition of marriage;

mar·riage/ˈmarij/Noun: 1.The formal union of a man and a woman, typically recognized by law, by which they become husband and wife.
2.A relationship between married people or the period for which it lasts.

You can also marry wall-paper, but I don't hear the religious leaders complaining about that.
The male/female thing is just what we are used to, it doesn't mean two people of the same sex can't be married, it's just an unusual concept at the moment, we'll all get used to it and wonder what all the fuss was about.

Good to see imho, everyone should have the right to be who they are and express themselves in whatever way they see fit. Nice to see Gov'ts standing up for the rights of people.

Good, bigots in religion need to to take a good hard look at themselves. Equality is equality, now can we have civil partnerships for straight people.

It's not like marriage between men is a new thing. Nero used to perform same sex unions up until 342 AD.

Amongst the Romans, there were instances of same-sex marriages being performed, as evidenced by emperors Nero[14][15] and Elagabalus[citation needed] who married men, and by its outlaw in 342 AD in the Theodosian Code

The sanctity of marriage argument also falls a bit flat, when the Church of England was set up by Henry VIII so he could get divorced.

Besides his six marriages, Henry VIII is known for his role in the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church. Henry's struggles with Rome led to the separation of the Church of England from papal authority, the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and establishing himself as the Supreme Head of the Church of England.

Good for Scotland! I'm with you about the second class citizens comment, dude. Gay marriage should be legal in every country in the world that calls itself a democracy. I would go so far as to say it's apartheid methods to not allow it.

And yes, the religious bigots need to suck it up and shut up about it.

Way to go Scots!

Maybe you can teach us Americans a thing or two about equality. We seem to be having some issues, although our president is coming around.

Still a proper definition, regardless of age.

Nope - I believe the definition has changed, since gay marriage is legal in some U.S. states, and in several countries - recognized by law.

I think gay marriage is just a way for rich gay couples to avoid paying death duties and tax, therefore I'm all for it.

Its a shame the ancient and beautiful ceremony of Marriage is being ruined by liberals and athiests.

On the up shot, the gays get to experience the horrors of marriage.

Its a shame Equal Rights is being ruined by closed minded - judgmental Fundamentalists.

And I doubt any marriage ceremony will be more beautiful then when Gays do it.

Kind of ironic - - that the Sistine Chapel - - one of the most beautiful religious artworks in the world - - was done by a Gay dude.
