A STRONG 6.5-magnitude earthquake has hit the Solomon Islands, the US Geological Survey says.
The tremor late on Wednesday, which was just 22km deep, had its epicentre on the south coast of the island of Guadalcanal, 39km southwest of the capital Honiara.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued an information statement saying: "Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected."
