Why is India so bad for women?

Look at some statistics and suddenly the survey isn't so surprising. Sure, India might not be the worst place to be a woman on the planet – its rape record isn't nearly as bad as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for instance, where more than 400,000 women are raped each year, and female genital mutilation is not widespread, as it is in Somali. But 45% of Indian girls are married before the age of 18, according to the International Centre for Research on Women (2010); 56,000 maternal deaths were recorded in 2010 (UN Population Fund) and research from Unicef in 2012 found that 52% of adolescent girls (and 57% of adolescent boys) think it is justifiable for a man to beat his wife. Plus crimes against women are on the increase: according to the National Crime Records Bureau in India, there was a 7.1% hike in recorded crimes against women between 2010 and 2011 (when there were 228,650 in total). The biggest leap was in cases under the "dowry prohibition act" (up 27.7%), of kidnapping and abduction (up 19.4% year on year) and rape (up 9.2%).

A preference for sons and fear of having to pay a dowry has resulted in 12 million girls being aborted over the past three decades, according to a 2011 study by the Lancet.

A glance at the Indian media reveals the range of abuse suffered by the nation's women on a daily basis. Today it was reported that a woman had been stripped and had her head shaved by villagers near Udaipur as punishment for an extramarital affair. Villagers stoned the police when they came to the rescue. In Uttar Pradesh, a woman alleged she was gang raped at a police station – she claimed she was set on by officers after being lured to the Kushinagar station with the promise of a job.

Canada best G20 country to be a woman, India worst

in.reuters.com...

HOW THEY RANK 1. Canada 2. Germany 3. Britain 4. Australia 5. France 6. United States 7. Japan 8. Italy 9. Argentina 10. South Korea 11. Brazil 12. Turkey 13. Russia 14. China 15. Mexico 16. South Africa 17. Indonesia 18. Saudi Arabia 19. India

Some blame the lack of respect for women on the western influences, while it may play a roll, ultimately people are responsible for their own actions.

And I don't buy the G20 nations list either.

No surprises here. The last three countries also happen to have big Islamic populations and arranged marriages where women are really just treated as chattle... and it goes without saying that the Hindu's treat their women like crap too. Lots of honour killings and such...

I don't think anyone who has a choice would want to live in India. It's a poor, disgusting, underdeveloped country with the worst food in the world.

As for woman: It has to be pretty bad there, even the article says that the numbers of rape aren't the worst, what makes it disgusting is the high number (i think highest of all countries if i'm not mistaken) of incest rape and the numbers are rising every year.

Its the top and worse in G20 list. India has really advanced from its independence, to make to G20 is pretty good how they were a 3rd worldish country in 1950s.

I think most of the information is incorrect in the position of how it is viewed, it says 45% of the girls are married. In countries like India, children mature earlier, take much more responsible at earlier age(esp in village areas, keep in mind lots of village still exist) and they marry early as well.

Genital mutilation is not practiced in India, but however, India has neighbors who has been practicing, for them t come into India is not a big deal.

I see China is close to the bottom on the list, but both of those countries are advancing at a high rate, both posses nuclear weapons, both have immense populations.

There are several reasons, most which boil down to idiotic traditions people won't let go of. They hold men in higher respect than women and as such treat women like chattel because that's what they are to them.

It's just getting worse too. Now they can just abort girls before they are born and that's what they are doing. India is going to be like China soon-Overpopulated with a shortage of females.

I remember that video, and I wonder if things are going to get worse for women word-wide.

Shouldn't conditions have improved by now? Everywhere?

Norway tops Canada, and the social programs aren't socialism, they are maintained by even the more right coalitions they get, because they are constitutional substantive equality. Programs equalize women and men's plights. Give an example, a single man getting a masters degree, on a student loan has to borrow only for himself. A woman 3 kids would have to borrow a whole bunch more, be cut off before she could get more than a secretarial. Some countries treat children like pets, as if its your problem, others know ,all work is work of equal value, and stay at home moms are doing equal to a rocket scientist, IF NOT MORE IMPORTANT WORK.

That's the thing. Norway ROCKS!

Now, being born in India may be very bad in certain families, but versus the middle east or Saudi Arabia. Hmmm...? That is the world's worst treatment of women.

It is true tho, if you are not rich, or at least above average, you life would suck there. because you would be living with the bad apples, under different rules.

Cities are usually for well off people, and have different rules overall. Police barely care about what goes on the country/village sides. they response slower to it than a emergency in city. Its all Politics in the end.

Any links to particular studies by a reputable organization?

Also it would make sense for the numbers to be high since the population is 1.2 billion. But the ratio would be the same as any other country including Germany where incest and/or other forms of crimes are committed on a daily basis. Think about it this way that it had a female president and a prime minister unlike many countries where the only thing that keeps the crime against women in check is the law and technology. Otherwise the women for the most part are always treated a bit differently even in advanced societies and/or 1st world countries
This is a global problem and not necessarily particular to a single country. The studies and stats are generally biased and directly/indirectly tied to a international level propoganda (UN, IMF etc etc).

According to estimates, one in five women in Germany suffer physical or sexual violence at the hands of their partner. Domestic violence happens at all levels of society, and takes a number of forms, pointed out Claudia Schrimpf, president of the association "Women Helping Women" and director of the Autonomous Women's Refuge in Cologne.

Only thing i can be sure from that list is the abortion of female infants. Rest are incorrect estimation/ratio of a population of 1.2Billion.

Female infanticide is done because, its cost money to educate, in the end, the daughter is gone with the husband. Men of the family usually stays with the family, so they are for the long run, they can help with farm, and a security for the home. Again, this is taking a village/poor lifestyle into the matter.

Life in city is different, because women are educated due to rich parents or well of parents, can get jobs equivalent to men. etc etc

The villages in India and cities in India is like 2 different country.

ROFL i like how you're deflecting the blame onto the Muslims. Have the statistics stunned you so bad that you can't believe a non-Islamic nation treats it's women the worst on this planet?

There is a reason why hindus converted to Islam so easily while the Mughals enjoyed thousands of hindu wives centuries ago. And that's because Hindus treat their wives like animals and having baby girls is one of the worst things in the hindu culture.

"
Probably because it's easier (And safer) to report a rape in the U.S.. Elsewhere they are more liable to be "honor killed" And didn't you consider that most rapes go unreported, It's kind of hard to get rape statistics in the Congo as well as most places in the dark continent.

Well, first of all it is not MY propaganda, and I am not British.

Secondly I think it behooves us all to take a good hard look at our cultures and change what needs changing.

No need to be offended.
