I think it would take some mental gymnastics to believe that the constant barrage of negativity didn't affect us in some way. Fortunately, for many of us, the solution is just a big step away from the sources such as logging off popular media for a while. I think a fair portion of us are already ignoring what used to be considered news stations since they are little more than propaganda machines at this point.

I think the best thing to do is find like minded people for positive reinforcement. Be true to yourself.

Keeping all this in mind, the sub conscious has around 1000 thoughts per minute and feeds the conscious mind a selection of choices based on each scenario. For example, during a conversation where someone says to you "Hi", your sub conscious may feed your conscious mind with a selection that is as follows (very simple scenario)...

"Hi"

"Bye"

"Get lost"

I've explained it to my grown son as the brain doing a keyword search for phrases and statements that may apply to a generic version of whatever situation is at hand.
I believe this explains the abusive behavior of extremely intoxicated people. If the drunk person is in a belligerent or mean spirited mindset then the brain will do a keyword search for phrases that reflect that mindset. Then the drunk person takes that to be one of their own thoughts. Eventually the brain is trained to produce the abusive thoughts automatically whenever the person gets drunk.
