Very valid observation regarding preservation. Weather conditions have to be factored because it could mean the difference between rot (if buttons do that) or staying intact.
With that said I also suspect they used metal detectors or spent more time than the average passer by would. Still a coincidence it was found in 2012 via a UFO show but who else would be looking down there?
