Until this is confirmed by a NASA shill like Jim Oberg, I ain't believing it.

What's there not to believe?

This is about the magnetic fields of the Earth and Sun connecting to each other in such a way (in a previously unknown way) that particles can ride this connected magnetic field in a direct path to Earth, rather than the particles leaving one magnetic field then entering the other.

Plus, these findings are not even new. This connection between the magnetic fields of the Earth and Sun has been known for a few years.

Too many people are only reading the "AlienDigest" take on this, and are not reading the original source article. Don't go by the "AlienDigest" take on the original article. They got the whole point of the original article wrong. I have no idea where they got "space-time portal" out of the original article.

No, NASA does not "concede space-time portals exist!" The press release from NASA says nothing about space-time. What it is describing are lines of magnetic reconnection. In short, the interaction between the Sun and the Earth's magnetic fields "tunnels" plasma to the Earth. Your secondary source is notoriously unreliable.

ahhhhhh....

yes

they have .. DOH~! Hidden Portals in Earth's Magnetic Field

Ho0w do NASA shills like Oberg stand on these issues?

Can you show where Nasa says they have found SPACE-TIME PORTALS please?

If you're going to attempt to correct someone, it helps to be correct.

Geez...
Are people actually READING the nasa statement???
These are MAGNETIC "PORTALS", even then the portal name isn't quite accurate..
They should have called them "Magnetic Fast Lanes" or something to the effect and we could avoid all this frantic "teenage-ish" feather ruffling...

Are people here illiterate or just too lazy to read the material?

These are not portals. These are not wormholes. These are not methods for traveling long distances in a short period of time. Nothing crazy or revolutionary is being discovered here.

They are simply spots where the magnetic field of Earth and the sun connect. Nothing more. You don't transport all the way to the sun when you enter one of these "portals" (VERY misleading word to use)

If one spaceship left Earth traveling towards the sun, and a second ship entered one of these portals, both ships would arrive at their destination at the exact same time. It's simply a connection of a magnetic field, it's not a wormhole. There is zero stuff here relating to space travel or wormholes or anything, I am honestly really shocked that some people in this thread refuse to simply read the material and figure out what they are actually talking about.

It's as if some people just heard the word "portal" and then stopped reading, and made up their own article in their head.

I'll reiterate, no wormhole, no portal, no space travel, no nothing. Just a connection between the magnetic field of the Earth and sun.

Why say the truth, when a good lie will suffice?

Oh by the way, ooohh its just a point where the magnetic field of the earth connects with the sun, ahh no big deal, I get one of those everyday with m y Starbuck skinny latte.

Seriously, this sort of presumptuousness is on par with the guy on the board who said the discovery of the Higgs-Boson particle was not big deal, who cares?!!

the apathy toward the unknown working parts of the universe and their dismissal as the mundane I.e. "that's all" is quite astounding

How about some humility for the awesomeness that is the universe young man.

I didn't mean this was no big deal as in "who cares this doesn't mean anything"

People were jumping to conclusions about this being some sort of wormhole, or a way to travel faster than light, etc etc. I was saying this discovery is nowhere near that level of "crazy"

I still think most any and all discoveries of this type are definitely COOL and worth the effort, I was simply trying (and evidently failed) to articulate that this discovery is not some mind blowing feat that will allow us to travel across the universe.

Sorry to tell you but NASA is calling them portals... so..?

science.nasa.gov...
www.nasa.gov...
mms.gsfc.nasa.gov...

I will concede that the Aliendigest article may be a little far fetched, i linked to it to give it credit for the article, however, is it possible that since these particles can travel quite quickly from the sun to the earth in the short time that some of these 'portals' are open, that it could be conceived as some sort of space-time portal? I mean to move 93 Million miles in a short time...

Also, i think the Author at AlienDigest may have taken the sci-fi definition of a portal, although that IS what NASA is calling it, a little too far by concluding that it must have something to do with time/space...

After reading this I'm even more baffled as to why YOU chose this title for the thread. NASA never said space-time portal.

I took the title from the article linked in the OP, so that's why its like that...
And sorry, to clarify, NASA called them portals, the AlienDigest put their own spin on it
Eta- as I hypothesized above, do you think its possible that considering the distance travelled and the incrediy short time it takes, that there may be some sort of time_space thing happening??

I'm still looking for that info. Where exactly do they say what this incredibly short travel time is?

Well, no one pays any attention when NASA put actual science on their web page. And even when they take care, the ignorant populace chooses to ignore it or reinterpret it to support their favourite pseudoscientific idea.

So why not skip the hard task of putting up actual science, and jump straight to the irresponsible fantasy.

I'd say mission accomplished NASA. Now people will start wondering if you are covering up real science by putting popular science fiction on your website. Perhaps people will start looking to see what NASA are really doing, rather than what they say they are doing, and learn some actual science along the way.

Well, we can cross our fingers and hope. But probably not much risk of that.

As more and more budget cuts loom, NASA has tailored its press releases to be more and more sensationalist. Sad, but true.

Good observation. I never really noticed it before, but you're right. I guess they have to garner interest in hopes of getting funding.... it's a shame that it all comes back to politics instead of knowledge

Great find! So many possibilities! We found the,"Higgs Boson", now to figure out how to redact mass.
