Greetings ATSers,

So I have been studying the UFO game for a looong time now, it started with "in search of" with Leonard Nimoy in the late seventies and has been going rampant ever since. Area 51 is pretty much a required class for any UFO or mystery geek like myself and I'm sure, most of you. I, like many of you again, has probably spent many hours cruising Area 51 on Google earth. I've read and seen all the books/sites/shows both practical and fantastic on the subject. needless to say I'm pretty well versed. I've heard many times of all the failed/crashed craft, both experimental and not, buried in the surrounding areas...just bulldozed over to cover it or hide it from prying eyes.

I've come across the image many times and have wondered at its origins. it very well could be nothing or a natural formation. it could be a failed employee garden plot abandoned years ago for all I know. But I've always found this one extra curious for some reason...I just wanted to post this and get the ATS communities opinion on what it might be.

humorous input also welcome, cause you have to admin it has a very phallic shape..

Maybe it's an underground tunnel.

I think about 95% of the area 51 base is underground so that no one can spy on their top secret defense work.

There's miles of tunnels and hangers , labs, etc so noticing something buried there wouldn't be very unusual.

The feature in question did not exist during the earliest days of the base. It does not appear in the September 1959 aerial photos.

So far, the earliest image I have found with this artifact is the aerial photo taken in August 1968. It is clearly a manmade feature, an asymmetrical earthen mound with a dark boundary of foliage. There appears to have been something near the center of the mound. I'll have to dig out a good print of the 1968 image and magnify it. The mound was located northwest of the golf course and drainage ponds.

By the time the 1988 satellite image was taken by the Russians, a dirt road had been graded right through the mound. Based on satellite imagery from the 1990s to the present, it remains unchanged to this day.

cool , good info shadow, thanks!..from what I understand the burning pits were more in the southern region of the base, so that seems to eliminate that, but you never know. I love to think its a Pleiades cigar craft or something of that sort,
..but given its 800 ft long its seems to be bigger than a conventional craft, assuming of course its a craft in the first place. Again, I'm willing to concede/find out its something mudane...buts its still so damn curious..

The infamous burn pits/trenches were located in the vicinity of the Fire Response Training Area ("Crash Pit") that was established for use by the Area 51 Fire Department in 1960. This was just southeast of the dormitories.

In the 1968 aerial image, there appears to be a drainage ditch running from the "mystery mound" to the Golf Course. Perhaps it is not a mound, but a drainage pit or reservoir to water the greens.

Crashed aircraft were buried at Area 51. Prior to when the 1968 photo was taken, these included several U-2 and A-12 airframes, and an F-101B. In later years, the two HAVE BLUE demonstrators were interred near the southern end of the base, along with various other test articles (such as several SENIOR PROM unmanned craft).
