yesterday I decided to work a little on an avatar. I spent about 3 hours putting one together, and about 3 more trying to make it fit with the guidelines provided.

SimonGray

GIF and JPEG file formats only with a maximum dimension of 160 pixels wide, by 320 pixels tall. File sizes are not to exceed 75k, and animated GIF's are allowed. (physical size can extend up to 400 pixels tall for images under 50k in file size)

Unfortunatly that didnt work.

The original I that I spent hours on.

Cmon, we all like to make it look right, right?

and so.. sized down to fit specs max specs. Pushing the limit, the 400pixle tall idea didnt work, so I chopped it down to the next lower size. Which, as you can see, the detail gets worse and worse.

The problem is, every single time, it cuts off my image at the nose. Untill this one... UGH! guess how small?

75x200 and ugly.

So what am I doing wrong?

Looks beautiful.

Thank you very much.

Though I'm a little perplexed, becaused I've seen others. Matter of fact, the one I fashioned the size from was a background image a user had here, and cropped it down to meet board specs. It doesnt give any information on background sizes that I could tell.

You need to use this image as background and then use a spacer as your avatar (transparent 1px wide and x pixel height) to stretch your post. But you will use up much space in the thread this way. However, long post of yours will then look awkward because at a certain point, your background will tile downwards.

I´m bored and will use your avatar to try this if you dont mind.

I tried it with your picture as background and a spacer that I had in my ATS uploads, you can use if you want:

Copy this into the avatar textform
files.abovetopsecret.com...

and this into the background textform
/files/img/xz4ff03a71.png

you´re welcome

I would also make the height a little bit smaller. The aspect ratio of the image isn't exactly right. See how it gets cut off at the bottom.

Thanks again. I was able to highlight and grab it from when you had it up.

This is very cool. Many many thanks!

Press CTRL and scroll with your wheel. It depends on the zoom property of your browser I think

Hmmm wtf, that is the weirdest crap ever. The picture should be set as the same height as the div it is contained in, and zooming should not matter. But oddly enough that's not how ATS has designed it. Instead we have some weird setup which changes depending on the zoomage. I was wondering why it was so damn hard to make my background the correct height.

I wondered too. Was actually a mistake that I discovered this long ago. I was in another thread where I wanted to take a closer look at a picture so I zoomed and found out about this.
