I only remember sketchy details about this incident, but is this the case where it was discovered that a Cessna landed somewhere in the vicinity, without a flight plan, or something like that? As I said, I don't really remember, but reading about this some years ago I seem to remember someone implying that he disappeared purposefully.

Nice find.
From what I've read so far - around 100 out of the 315 pages (didn't read the hand-written documents) - two things appear likely:

a) the plane went down over the sea, either in a controlled or uncontrolled manner
b) Valentich was hiding something

But that's it. If there is a correlation between these two likelihoods (can't really call them "facts") it is not evident, and it may not be evident for a long, long time, if ever.
The same goes for the sequence and nature of the events.

And also that it displayed green lights, was "toying" with him, and was finally hovering over him...

If he did indeed plan to disappear, that comment he made a couple of weeks before might have been a test. If she'd shared the fantasy perhaps he would have invited her along? He could have been testing the water.

Or, possibly he wanted to reassure her after his disappearance that his intention was not to leave her?
It does seem to highlight the possibility that he possibly had "fore knowledge" about his disappearance. It doesn't seem like he planned a very good alibi with the story that he was going to pick up crayfish on King Island since he had made no such arrangements. Likewise his explanation that he was picking up friends on King Island seems equally at odds with the facts.

I am left to infer that he either "planned his disappearance" or "had foreknowledge of his disappearance".

There was a meteorite shower in that area that ightt is it not possible the object he saw was a meteor? he did say the object was "not a plane". He then could havebeen hit by another meteor the metalic scraping sounds heard on the audio could be the sounds of the impact?

This crossed my mind too, but that kind of aerial destruction would have probably left behind a lot of surface debris and certainly would have left a fuel and oil slick. The other slicks that were analysed weren't from aircraft.

Some kind of *soft landing* into the waters and then sinking could explain the lack of debris/slicks. Then again, they searched the area...which brings us back to Valentich being where he said he was. Not to mention the fact that if a Cessna was ever found around the bay, folk would likely expect it to be the famous Valentich plane and the publicity would go international in hours.

It might be a possible explanation for a "UFO sighting" but chances are astronomically against the possibility his plane could have been hit by a meteor.

Is it possible he simply flew into the Strait after staging an "apparent UFO abduction" on his radio? It seems hard for me to imagine he would remain calm in his delivery if he was on the verge of deliberately crashing his plane.

I guess we'll never know...

He could have mistaken multiple meteors for the same single object

Man, Ive read some desperate, straw clutching explanations from the skeptics before but, wow- multiple meteors? Hovering above him?

It could appear as if it is hovering if it matches the speed of his airplane and stays right on top of it...

Explanation: Uhmmm???

It's because of a thing called RELATIVITY!

If you are seated on a train going 80mph and there is a person walking down the isle of the carriage at 2mph and I am in a helicopter travelling at 80mph above the carriage then from your point of view I would be hovering over the trains carriage!

The real speeds involved for each person from say the view of the postmaster sitting in his office at the station as the train and helicopter passed would be ...

You, seated in the train carriage, would be moving at 80mph RELATIVE to the postmaster!

The person, walking down the isle of the carriage, would be moving at 82mph RELATIVE to the postmaster!

Me, in the helicopter, would be moving at 80mph RELATIVE to the postmaster!

....

You, seated in the train carriage, would be moving at 0mph RELATIVE to the carriage!

The person, walking down the isle of the carriage, would be moving at 2mph RELATIVE to the carriage!

Me, in the helicopter, would be moving at 0mph RELATIVE to the carriage!

....

Note the different APPARENT speeds depending on where one is viewing from ok!

Personal Disclosure: I hope that helps answer your query!

Good point. He should have had his English and science teachers there to correct his misuse of the term "hovering".

"No Frederick, you silly boy! That UFO is NOT hovering, it is simply matching your speed? Hover means it motionless with respect to the ground - not motionless with respect to a moving observer."

Just been reading about that case the 4 crew members all described the same thing. The object sounded very similar to the valentich sighting even down to the green light

Keith and Andrew Arnold of the Victorian UFO Action group stumbled on a new document.

There is information on this file which does not appear on the Air Accident file, and both the files need to be read to completely understand the incident.

National Archives of Australia (NAA) file series A4703, control symbol 1978/1205 is titled "VH-DSJ Light aircraft overdue King Island," barcode 11485989, and held at the Canberra office of the NAA. The file, of 292 pages was owned by the Department of Transport's Marine Operations Centre, and is a MARSAR (Marine Search and Rescue) file.

To see the report on the official Australian National Archives website, check out Keith's blog for further instructions or you can click the link here:

For people who want to download the whole PDF here's the scribd link:

I thought I'd mention that this afternoon as I was reading through the National Archive document I got a bit tee'd at how the session kept timing out. So to save myself any future aggravation I hammered together a quick script to download and convert all the images to a PDF. Here's a link to the 315 page report on scribd.

www.scribd.com...

For anyone who wants to download additional documents off the Australian National Archives. Here's the source code and a copy of the executable I cobbled together from pieces of the (much) larger Fold3 BlueBook scraping project. Be aware the executable will only work with Firefox. It shouldn't be that difficult to make the script work with another browser. Just download the source and edit lines 278 and 279 replacing firefox with the executable image name of the browser.

line 278: WinActivate("[CLASS:Firefox]")
line 279: WinWaitactive("[CLASS:Firefox]", "", 3)

Hi Xtraeme,

I didn't see that executable file and source code at the time you posted it. In the last few days, I've been adopting a different approach (using WinHTTrack at first) and now have started using a combination of a batch file and Wget (following helpful pointers by ArMap and Kr0nZ, with draft batch file code prepared by ArMap):
www.abovetopsecret.com...

I thought you might be interested. I've created searchable PDF versions of about 40 Australian UFO files (a few thousand pages) in the last few days and the Wget/batch file should make progress faster on further files.

This is a relatively small project relative to your Reaper, but I thought you might be interested.

Thanks for bumping this Isaac as it jogged something in my memory about this case.

There was an Unsolved Mysteries show about this case back in the 1990s and it includes a series of photos taken by Roy Manifold on the shoreline almost directly under Valentich's flightpath at sunset.

One of the photos shows what looks to be a blemish in the sky and according to the programme this was confirmed by an Australian photographic lab as being "in the picture" and not dust on the lense or a photographic artifact. It was also sent to the US for research and the blot was confirmed as a solid object that appeared to be enveloped in a cloud of exhaust.

However in later years another US lab declared this was probably a "developing error" before the program aired.

The photographer set the camera on automatic to photograph the sunset but did not recall seeing anything until the photos were developed. Although he would have had to stare directly into the sun.

Here is a screenshot of the photograph from the DVD of the relevant Unsolved Mysteries show.

Unfortunately Youtube have purged every last copy of this show from their site so I can't provide a link to the video segment that includes this story.

It's possibly another piece of evidence in this case, albeit, still leaving it a frustratingly inconclusive one.

i have a hunch / opinion , based on the common pilot sightings , that these Phenomena are 'buzzing' or trying to scare pilots. Valentich's accident maybe because he panicked and lost control of his aircraft (or even engine trouble).

see the other UFO cases that also have UFO phenomena buzzing / scaring pilots , thankfully with no casualties

- Bethune / Gander UFO incident
- RAAF Seafury UFO incident ( www.ufocasebook.com... )
- Iroquis Canadian Destroyer UFO Incident (ok this is a ship but the pattern is the same)

from all these 3 cases you can see similarities, the UFO/Ship enters an area where they suddenly acccosted by unknow objects. One interesting theory about this is that the Plane/Ship intrudes on these entities's territory and got buzzed by some guarding object. This is documented in the ship encounters of the old, or faerie lore of travelling person intruding on certain area. Again to understand this theory a read of Jacques Vallee's Passport to Magonia is mandatory.

regards

I'd like to see the interview. It's inconceivable imo that the photographer would miss a large object or smoke-ball like that in the image.

If it was an exploding Cessna, it's hard to imagine the guy missing it. If it was a dense smoke cloud, again, it's a tough task to think he wouldn't see it. Even when he was framing his shot, one would expect the 'whatever-it-is' to be rather attention-grabbing if it was really there.

Looking at sunset times raises a problem too. In the image, it's a few short minutes away from sunset. Valentich vanished at 19:05 and sunset time in the area on the 21st October is 19:43. This discrepancy could indicate the photographs weren't taken at the time of the incident.

It's piqued my interest though so I'll see if there are any copies in non-YT places.
