"The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it comes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group”

- Franklin Roosevelt, 1938.

As we progress into the 21st century, the take over of the government’s responsibilities by private companies is all around us. It's not until you stop and look at how many examples there already are that you realise the corporate take over is happening right now. Any business operates solely to make money, they should never take over the responsibility of a sovereign state.

Of the many examples, we have the security company G4S.

en.wikipedia.org...

They are the largest security firm in the world and operate in over 125 countries. They are involved in the prison industry, immigration, the middle east and even are set to be the security of the 2012 Olympic games.

www.opendemocracy.net...

It’s based in Britain, where it is fast taking over vital public services. . . in policing, running prisons and children’s homes, dominating “asylum markets”, training magistrates, assessing welfare claimants, building and running hospitals and schools. It’s a very big player in the Private Finance Initiative.

G4S is installing smart meters in our homes, guarding our supermarkets, supplying number-plate recognition technology to retailers, the police and the military, performing covert surveillance for insurance companies.

This company operates solely for profit. Regarding the Olympic games security, there are reports that the training is inadequate, they’ve taken close to £300,000,000 from the tax payer to do the security yet are cutting corners-

www.itv.com...

But some staff who have worked on the operation have told us they have witnessed security breaches by G4S staff already working at Olympic venues. They want to be anonymous – but when it comes to vehicle checks for example, one told us-

‘I have seen on a number of occasions personnel with mirrors walking around the vehicle not actually looking at the mirror’.

Among the key claims they make are:

- The cargo areas of lorries and contractors vans have not been adequately searched either by dogs, scanners or other security teams.

- In some instances dogs which were not trained to find explosives have been used to carry out fake searches of vehicles.

- Some assessments of dogs and handlers have been faked, with the handlers told where to direct their dogs to find test explosives.

- Some venues have already complained that G4S staff are not adequately briefed.

The charges against them are many yet they continue to expand. From using lethal force on detainees to security guards falling asleep whilst working at nuclear sites, this company is putting us at risk as our government continues to hand over their powers to them.

One of the most important areas of growth for G4S has been in the UK's criminal justice system as successive governments "rolled back the state" for private companies to take on previously public services. It opened its first prison in 1997, and now runs six institutions across England. The latest – HMP Oakwood – opened in Wolverhampton in April.

Now G4S has its sights on the UK's police service. Last month, when the 17 members of the West Midlands police authority gathered in the main committee room at police headquarters in Birmingham to discuss the biggest police privatisation deal to date, G4S's bid was near the top of the pile. If the proposals go through, the successful firm could be handed contracts to investigate crimes, carry out forensics and run private "prisoner removal units", as part of a £1.5bn deal that includes Surrey police.

The very idea of prisons being run for profit is terrifying. The incentive of prisons run by the state it to have as few prisoners as possible (as it costs money) and to have as low a recidivism rate as possible. Once you have private companies like G4S running prisons, then it is about keeping the prison population as high as possible because their intention is to profit. You don’t have to search hard to see cases of neglect and violence against prisoners under G4S.

Regarding the police, people may moan now, but whilst corruption exists, the police in the UK at least do a very good job. Privitising the police is a nightmare scenario. If you privatise the police- who would control those who are there to ‘serve and protect’ us?

The handover of responsibily from the state is also seen in unemployment-

www.redpepper.org.uk...

A4e, a for-profit company entirely dependent for its business on £180 million of government contracts under which it is supposed to help unemployed people get in to work (something which used to be the job of the State), last year paid Harrison £8.6 million in dividends - money directly siphoned from tax-payers

But this cosy arrangement has now gone catastrophically wrong with the arrest of four A4e employees over claims of fraud. It has emerged that, among other allegations, A4e has had to pay back public funds on five occasions after government investigations found irregularities, and that the company made job seekers work in its offices for at least a month for no pay.

I know people who have been forced to go to training courses to get back into work, companies like A4E are a complete joke. Nobody learns anything of benefit, the longer the person stays out of employment and attending courses the more money A4E will make. It’s just another example of ‘for-profit’ sneaking into roles that should be the responsibility of the state.

There needs to be accountability, but as private companies take over more and more, they’re given free reign to do as they please.

Even our healthcare is in danger of being privatised, in fact it has already started-

www.guardian.co.uk...

Financial pressures, flat budgets until 2015 and an ongoing £20bn savings drive mean that at least 20 to 30 hospitals (10% of hospitals in England) are facing bankcruptcy in their current form and soon would be forced to shut or reduce services significantly. The Department of Health is already discussing handing the management of 10-20 hospitals to the German firm Helios. It is inevitable that people will link the closures to the NHS reforms. A profit driven model will undermine all that is precious about the NHS.

The road to fascism is well on the way, all these things are happening now and it is going to get worse and worse.

Remember the words of Roosevelt from 1938-

"The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it comes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group”

The same G4S company doing security at the Olympics anf trying to take over our prison and police services are also involved in Israel, it really is cause for concern-

www.abovetopsecret.com...

electronicintifada.net...

British-Danish security firm G4S has been severely criticized for its operations in the occupied Palestinian territories and in prisons and detention centers in Israel, including those housing children and “administrative detainees” held without charge or trial.

On 17 April Palestinian organizations called for action against G4S for its role in Israeli prisons where Palestinian political prisoners from the occupied territories are held in contravention of international law.

The ties between G4S and the Israeli police became even closer when - last year - the Policity group won a 25-year contract to build, operate and maintain the new Israeli police training center in the Israeli town of Beit Shemesh. G4S owns 50 percent of Policity and will be the operating contractor of the project.

G4S must be aware of the instrumental role that the Israeli police play in implementing the country’s discriminatory and repressive laws, for example in the demolition of Palestinian property, the forcible eviction of Palestinians from their homes, the repression of protests against Israeli policies, the violent blocking of Palestinians from prayer in Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the shutting down of Palestinian media. By providing services to the Israeli police, G4S has sided with the force that tramples on basic human rights.

This is the company the British government is handing over security of the London olympic games to! This is the private company slowly taking over prison services in the UK and our police forces.

However, I'm sure this slow take over of police and prison services in multiple countries under the G4S umbrella is nothing to be concerned about.
